PHYSICAL EDUCATION The recent governmental emphasis on physical fitness has stepped up the physical education program in the schools. There are other strengths that must be gained from high school in addition to scholarly strength.Young adolescents cannot live by the books alone. The Physical Education de- partment offers diversity to school life. The PE instructors are also coaches for the varsity athletic pro- gram and continually offer students better health and better moral stan- dards through an active year, stres- sing knowledgable play and sports- manlike attitudes. ln the class, teams are formed and the basic fundamentals of volleyball, basketball, wrestling, touch football, horseshoes, softball, rhythms, tennis, apparatus, and badminton are taught. In addition to this all sophomores take one semester of health. 18

HOME ECONOMICS For the career minded or domestic minded girl, there are a multitude of subjects that are available for study in the home economics program. Here the student learns skills that have a direct bearing on her daily life. The home economics rooms some- times abound with the pleasant odors of well prepared meals. At other times they are filled with sounds: the snip of scissors, the whir of sewing ma- chines, the gasp of distress as a mistake is discovered, and the sigh of relief and exclamation of pride as a garment is finished. Also emitted are the strains of distress and appeals for help as the girls struggle to balance a budget. In addition to these standard courses of learning to plan a tasty meal with good nutrition, learning to construct a va- riety of garments while acquiring good basic skills, and learning how to han- dle finances successfully, the opportu- nity for education in the areas of child care and home nursing is provided. With this knowledge a girl is prepared for her duties as a housewife, or to fur- ther her education along these lines and make a career as a teacher, dieti- tian, demonstration agent, or adult education instructor.
