Gordon Burbee, Franklin student flier, is responsible for the picture which was taken from his plane. Perhaps the students can imagine the immensity of our campus when the stadium is completed and the tennis courts and park are added next to the school. Franklin is now the most attractive school in Portland and soon in the future it will have the most up-to-date 'athletic facilities. 1-The Royal May Fete Court. 2-A basket of flowers is presented to Queen Maxine I. 3-Queen Maxine I and Robin Hood. 4-Clarke, y0u're supposed to watch 5 6 7 8 9 -These maidens the parade. seem to enjoy 'Ano school. How can he with them around. -VVaiting for the decision. Panama Rmfh I Just as the satin smooth petals form a rose, the petals of charm, poise, graciousness, and beauty form the personality of Ruth King, Franklinls Rose Festival princess for 1940. Ruth, whose, soft, low voice charms all who listen, has shown outstanding leadership and ability in her school life. She has for many years been active in the city-wide activities of Girl Reserves, and has held offices in her class and several clubs. The first eye-catching points you notice when you meet Franklin's prize rose is her flashing smile of perfect White teeth, and the quiet friendliness of blue-green eyes. Her graceful posture truly makes this King a queen of youthful beauty. 14lmanac Ufficmd. The Associated Girls' Students is an organization composed of all the girls at Frank- lin. At their assemblies, held every other Tuesday, a club, each time a different one, would plan and present the program. Also an outstanding speaker gave a short talk at each assembly. The speakers included Dulcena Brown, Nliss Anne Miilheroii, Tommy Luke and Art Kirkham. The girls were, in addition, entertained by an archery and fencing exhibition. Highlight of this term's activities was their dance held at the end of the term. Being a revival ofthe old only girls attend, this dance, the Circus City Slidef' was pre- sented in a very lively and elaborate manner, 36 Huw 1--Koch, Bower, Riggs, Bailey, Husk, Leonard, Gillespie. Among the past term's many activities were their annual picnic, the Quaker-Illuminati basketball game, ice cream sales at all bas- ketball games, a crackerjack sale, and a party for Nlanley llliles, an old member who married during the term. After several weeks' pledging, which was marked by middies and cotton stockings, Pentathlon gave a most successful swim- ming party at the northeast Y. BI. C. Aquilas represents an eagle that soars high in the sky and a group of stars. There are over seventy members in the club and they are always ready to do what is asked of them. This second term guidance club is dance minded, for during the last term their two outstanding activities have been dances. One, a Valentine party, was complete with program, valentine drawings, and dancing. The other was a Leap Year dance, where each member brought a boy. A most impressive formal installation of officers at the House of Hobbies was fol- lowed this term by a very successful party. The club also served tea to the mothers and teachers at a P.T.A. meeting, and sent an afghan to the war refugees as a service project. Other activities included: a hike, a bicycle trip, and a tea for lWother's Day. Peqaau The Pegasus Club was organized four terms ago for the purpose of furthering friendship among the girls. One of the social activities of the club is the sponsoring of a semi-annual dance. Only Pegasus girls and boys to whom the girls give bids may attend. T Garmin Zuni 8 VVanted by Coach Emigh: A recipe for winning home floor games. This year the basketball squad turned the tables and changed to a barnstorming team as they canvassed the city losing but one game away from home. All other de- feats, much to Coach Emigh's dismay, came at home. Despite this unusual occurrence the Quakers pulled through to cop undisputed third place for the third consecutive year. The season's opener came with Commerce, which was a real thriller, the locals win- ning in an overtime period 26-24. Next they took Benson and Edison in camp only to be tripped up by VVashington in a one-point victory. Another defeat came this time by Jefferson, but they pulled themselves together to knock over Lincoln. Grant added defeat number three, and Roosevelt lost to the Quakers to end the first round of play. Five wins, three defeats. The second round of play saw victories over Commerce, Benson, VVashington, lidi- son, and Grant, while Lincoln, Roosevelt and jefferson took one each from the Qua- kers, who finished the season winning ten and losing six. 63 .xi BOB LITTLE Fast and il good shot. san starting :ir-tion this season in several LTSUIIES. BIG JOE R..-LDEL In his first year on the varsity, he proved himself a real player. His six feet, four inches will be a big aid next season. MURRAY LEGS LOGAN His excellent ball handling and shooting: will probably be back again next season, NVESTON KNAPP His height was used to ad- vantage and he will be back again next year. 'hah Despite the handicap of not having a place to practice, the Quaker track squad made a most impressive showing In all their meets, with the exception of a triangular meet with Grant and Washington, first and second in the city respectively, and the city finals, Franklin dominated the field. The Maroon and Gray forces were led by Captain Gordon Spencer, who qualified for both of the sprints and the broad jump, Weston Knapp, pole-vault and high-jump, Bud Meadows, broad jump, Doug llfleeker, distance, Bod Dascenzo, discus and Ralph VViles, Marvin Bazzel and Bob Scheible, shot put. f The Quakers qualified thirteen men for the city finals, which tied them with the Colonials for second place. Although they will be hurt considerably by graduation, much can be expected from Franklin track squads in the future, when the bowl is completed. 65 Gaaofn B A 1940 baseball championship slipped from the grasp of the Quakers this year and again fell into the laps of Jefferson. Despite local predictions of a number one club, Franklin had to be content as number two club in the league standings with 12 wins and four losses. Five ball-players on this season's squad, who have been playing ball together for the past three years, will graduate this June. All five hit well over .300 and were five good reasons why the Quakers ended as high in the league as they did. They were Bill lX'IcCluskey, shortstopg Jim Birch, pitcherg Rich Carlaseio, piteherg Gene Hol- weger, first basemany and Vic Brown, outfielder. 66 GENE HOLWEGER His hitting and coverage of the initial sack were big reasons for Frainklin's suc- cess. VVithout exag- gerating, it can be said that this ball club will serve Franklin with many a fine baseball prospect in the future. Several of the team saw action in varsity games. Outstanding for the squad were Wilsoii, second-baseman gv Tate, short-stop, Fontaine, Catcher, and Rasmussen, pitcher. '69 Gel! The golf team this year had bad luck, losing seven matches in seven starts, to finish last in the city. Harry Town, playing number one man, was followed by Art Hobart, Pat Doyle and Mikolvier. '7enni4 This year's tennis squad, while not performing brilliantly, proved to be far from a pushover. Composed of several veterans, the team completely swamped the Rough- riders of Roosevelt by taking all six matches. They also, after a tough battle, squeezed out the Washington Colonials. Although the squad lost their other matches, they were never beaten badly. Al Hill, number one of the boys' team, played good ball constantly throughout the year. 70 l fee Jacky, Franklin's entry in the newly for1ned Interscholastic ice hockey league had consider- able trouble in making a successful debut as they failed to win a game.
