Oh mighty seniors could you ever believe It is these days you would come to grieve? Forgotten homework, a pledge to the flag An English teacher who would constantly nag Detentions given when you had to gab That guy you watched in bio lab Shy and weak we entered here Hoping to rush that freshman year So what if pep rallies weren ' t that loud? Deep inside- we were proud And here we stand-The Senior Class! Our doubts and fears we have surpassed The Prom, the midterms-all are gone We have only our spirit to carry on How quickly these times have passed us by But not without a tear or sigh Soon we must leave these friends we ' ve known What lies ahead? We ll never know But the past four years have helped us grow. The laughs, the dreams, the joy, the tears We ' ve made it together all these years. Ladies and gentlemen our lives have begun! Twist and Shout We twisted into our senior year with a dance sponsored by the senior class. Mr. Chelotti, who was our disk jockey, turned up the tunes and everyone began to twist and shout. Elevator Space, a band composed of high school students and under the direction of Stephen VanBuren, shared its musical talent with us. After a successful dance the senior class began planning for a pre- Halloween dance. The Student Council and national Honor Society also organized another event where students could twist and shout the night away. Ivan- ' The Dancer! Twist and Shout. Remember when . . . . On Being Twelve . . . The day I turned twelve, just four short years ago, I became a different person. Throughout the household 1 was known as The Brat ' Nothing ever satisfied me, and I was constantly complaining when my hair or clothes didn ' t work just right. I realize now that 1 was the definition of a conformist. As 1 recall my own bewildering experiences in the midst of puberty, I remember the age of twelve as being unlike any other. Most kids were entering junior high, a big step up from elementary school. There were a million new people to identify, and the people who were popular in sixth grade were now just faces in the crowd. We had to be, and I stress this, coool. First impressions were everything. We were so self-conscious then, we felt we must be accepted, liked and popular, and by all means have at least one boyfriend. For girls, it was a time of discovery. It seemed that every girl in the whole world had a bigger chest than you, and (oh my God!) your best friend had just bought a bra. You suddenly liked the boy you ' d known since kindergarten, even though he had the maturity of a six-year-old. Remember those Friday nights at the rink? THE hang-out. New couples formed and broke up every weekend, and if a boy was lucky, he might even get a kiss under the bleachers. No one ever brought skates because then we ' d have had to carry them around all night. (But Mom, I ' ll rent them!) The exceptional child had a ten o ' clock curfew and received the added bonus of awe and envy from his nine-thirty friends. We smoked cigarettes, swore, and wised -off to the teacher at every available moment. But young people at the age of twelve are very scared, nervous, and confused. We were no longer children, yet not quite teen-agers. We were baffled at the way our bodies, voices, and attitudes were changing. Sometimes we felt anxious forever locked in the world of insecurity. Our parents were of little help—at this point they were the most embarrassing and non-understanding creatures that God had ever created, and it was very important that they were well aware of that. But underneath the Levi ' s and Nike ' s, below the cold surface of hostility, conformity, and rebelliousness, lay a very loving and caring human being—a person who dreamed of that peaceful, exciting, and wonderfully secure place—high school. An excerpt from Mirage 1986 By Linda Doherty Ct I Every September for the past nineteen years, Franklin senior girls have asked themselves Should I do Junior Miss? ' ' For 26 ladies this season, that answer was yes. Just what is Junior Miss all about? Little did they know they were in for late nights, sore muscles, unfinished home¬ work, and above all, FUN! As the rehearsals got longer, the Spirit of Junior Miss grew stronger, and be¬ fore we knew it, it was curtain up! Because of the generosity of the Franklin Lodge of Elks, and the overwhelming dedication of Raye Lynn Padula, Chris DiMartino, the Mercer ' s and rest of the commit¬ tee, Jr. Miss is a huge success year after year. Beyond the glitter of the awards, however, lies the true definition of Jr. Miss, and de¬ spite what most people believe, it is not a competition to the girls involved. Perhaps they have dis¬ covered a hidden talent, attained poise or physical well-being, pol¬ ished interview skills or were mo¬ tivated to hit the books. One thing is for certain - they have all emerged from Jr. Miss as confi¬ dent, caring young women, and in the hearts of the 26 girls who ex¬ perienced it this year, the Spirit of Jr. Miss will live on and on. From left to right: Melanie Hyotte-Spirit of Jr. Miss and talent, Beth Hailer-Spirit of Jr. Miss, Pam Gianetti-4th runner up, Shelley Dunn-lst run¬ ner up and poise and appearance, Linda Doherty-JUNIOR MISS 1987, Wendy Dorr-3rd runner up, Marne Perreault-physical fitness, Becky Bardol-2nd runner up, Karen Fish also won scholastic achievement. And the winner is . . . Running The Senior Class Our class officers, Chris Sousa-President, Wally Bixby-Vice President, Chris Tattrie- Treasurer, and Wendy Dorr-Secretary, brought us together. With the help of our advisors, Mr. Radford and Mr. Mulcahy, they were able to organize the best year ever. It started out with the Senior-Fresh¬ men Get Acquainted Dance which proved to be very successful. However, our Christ¬ mas Banquet was even better. Seniors also showed their spirit by wearing the Class of 1987 blue and white tee-shirts. The Class of 1987 would like to thank our officers and advisors for their hard work. It has been a great year. Wendy Dorr, Chris Tattrie, Mr. Radford, Wally Bixby, Mr. Mulcahy, and Chris Sousa. 14 ' « f s Y, mm m, Seniors always have spirit Sean, it can ' t be that bad Tara and Kris check out the guys in study Paul, stop staring at the girls Debbie and Kristen, friends forever. Congratulations, Deidre Becky and Tommy dancing the night away. Dawn and her date look great together. Amy and Doug competing for Best Smile . The Best Of Times” The Junior Prom was the highlight of the junior year, but underneath all the glamour and excitement was a group of hard working people, namely the Prom Committee. The Prom Committee, along with Mr. Mulcahy and Mr. Radford, spent many hours planning and organizing this special occasion. They made the Junior Prom of 1986 happen. The Prom was held on April 23, 1986 at the Sheraton in Milford with the theme song being The Best of Times . Much preparation went into that special night. The girls spent endless hours looking for the perfect gown, while the guys waited patiently to see what color the girl was wearing before they rented their tuxedos. Limos had to be rented and flowers had to be bought. Then out came the cameras; millions of pictures were taken that night. The climax of the night came when the Prom Court was announced. A perfect night ended with a lot of memories that will last a lifetime, especially that the disk jockey didn ' t have our theme song to play. Pam and Kevin enjoy the night together. The Prom Court consists of Deidre Gillis, Cheryl Hovey, Lee-Ann Barkhouse, Melanie Hyotte, and Sherry Lee. Todd, don ' t worry, Debbie is having fun. The class president shows Kendall a good time. What a fearsome foursome?! 19 April 23, 1986 Shelley, Sue, and Wendy, pretty as a picture. Come on, everybody, let ' s dance. Jimmo ' s relaxed and comfortable. Tina, show us that step again. A view from the top. Karen heading down to the bottom. In the past ten years, senior classes have been making annual trips to Mt. Monadnock. Beginning with a rendezvous in the Jr. High parking lot, the Class of 1987 attempted to do the same. However, this year it wasn ' t as successful. Few climbed the entire mountain and celebrated at the top. Even fewer made it half way. Most of us failed to reach the mountain at all, due to unforeseen circumstances . nevertheless, this Columbus Day weekend will be one we ll never forget. What the mountain did to Franklin. Some made it, some didn ' t 22 Christine says, And this was supposed to be fun? ' ' Don ' t even think of taking a picture of me now! ' ' I ?aul says, Pat wake up! We re at the top! ' ' Two smiles of accomplishment. Yes, we are going to climb this mountain. Teddy says, Ed, are we really going to climb up there? ' ' The mountain takes its toll on Keith and John. Julie laughs, I ' m supposed to climb way up there? Melissa, before the climb. Mf Oskey ' 86 OSKEY 86 was the 51st annual variety show to benefit the FHS yearbook. A cast of sixty students, under the direction of Raye Lynn Padula, presented the OSKEY World Tour ' 86 on May 8th and 9th at the Horace Mann Auditorium. Through auditions and weeks of rehearsals, the cast prepared and performed two exciting shows filled with music, dancing and a lot of laughs. From America to the Islands, Great Britain through Europe, to Russia, the Middle East, Africa, China, Australia and home again, OSKEY sampled the many cultures, traditions, and music of the world and brought it all to the stage. In Memory Of Betsy This was written in loving memory of Elizabeth Anne Betsy ' ' Hunter for her birthday. She died March 27, 1982 as a result of a car accident. This poem was written by Marybeth Savicki, a friend of Betsy ' s. The Fourth Musketeer I sit at my window and gaze out at the autumn leaves and their vibrant colors. Memories of our friendship, not so smooth at times, fill my head. The fun of summers spent together. Weeks at camp where we learned more about each other as individuals and grew closer as friends. The fun of hectic school days. Days since nursery school; learning, exploring, dis¬ covering. Enjoying it together. But where has she gone? Away. Hot for an eternity, just a lifetime. I ' ll see her again some day. The colors blur as a tear softly falls to the windowsill. Falling as softly as the senseless autumn leaves. Leaves falling into the yard we played in together not too long ago. Through that blur and through the leaves I can pick put her house. The corner of her house where her room is. That room only holds memories now. Memories that cause another tear to roll down my cheek and slowly drop to the windowsill. Meeting with the other, they become one tear. A tear shed with pain. Pain of an ended friendship. Pain deeply felt. Still, life goes on. How, perhaps the beauty of life is more recognized. Maybe life is valued more. I treasure living and my life. I realize how lucky I am. I am only minor, though. A small part of a terribly large world. A world with problems. Deadlines to meet. Functions to attend. Wars to be fought causing thoughtless destruction and merciless deaths. A constant whir of activity pushing time on. As time goes on. I ' ll never stop missing her and her unique personality. I ' ll never be able to stop that empty feeling when I ' m enjoying something with friends, knowing she never was able to. One thing I ' m sure I ' ll never ever do is forget her. Our fourth musketeer Betsy. Happy Birthday, I miss you. Betsy is standing with her sister Debbie. Samantha Adams Kristen Anderson HH: Sam, Slam. FW: Jim, Deidre, Sonya, Terry, ho ney, Merv, Chris. They work together to ensure that the students recieve the best education possible. Our principal, Mrs. Swanbeck, d eserves great credit for much of the school ' s activities. She is understanding and willing to listen to students ' concerns. Frequent breakfasts are coordinated by the principal to listen to these suggestions. This year we also welcomed Mr. Qeysen as vice-principal who was in charge of discipline actions. Ms. Cataldo Ms. Doherty Ms. Kenny Guidance Ms. McManus This year the guidance counselors found themselves in what was the old D.E. Store. After the room was redecorated with a new carpet and a fresh coat of paint, they began the long process of changing schedules and helping seniors fill out college applications. The career center was moved from B-house to the room that once served as the D.E. classroom. Here students spent their time looking through college brochures to find that perfect school. Mr. Evans However, brochures are not the only aspects of the career center. Students also have the opportunity to visit with representatives from various colleges. This time allows the student to ask questions and find out any information needed to help them make that important career choice. Mr. Rainville Ms. Springer Mr. Feldman The Library Media Center offers students an excellent facility where they can study, do research, or read. Microfilm, microfische, and audio-visual equipment are available to the students for further research. Students are issued library cards at the beginning of the year enabling them to take books out. The Library is open from 7:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. for everyone to use. The librarians do their best to accomodate everyone ' s needs, even if it means sending a student back to study for talking too much. Library Mr. Peters Ms. Damiata Ms. Rosetti English Mr. Gilmore The English Classes, supervised by Ms. Vos burg, provide a well balanced background of grammar, vocabulary, and literature. Much of the literature is from American and British anthologies. Time is also spent in prepara¬ tion for the SAT s; students practice such drills as analogies, reading comprehensions, and TWSE excercises. They also coordinated a new program. The¬ atre Arts, taught by Ms. Duncan. This allows students to leam both what goes on behind, and on, the stage. Many of the highlights of the department include the annual mousetrap and gravity can races, and the bridge contest where bridges are made to support weight from 90 popsicle sticks and a tube of glue. The AP biology class also took a trip to Southboro Primate Center while the Freshmen Class went on the annual whalewatch. or . Foreign Language Ms. Ockey The Foreign Language Curriculum consists of courses in two modern languages, French and Spanish, and one classical language, Latin. A.P. classes are offered in both French and Spanish. The enrollment in the Latin courses has been steadily increasing over the past few years, reflecting a nationwide trend. Due to this increase in popularity, the department is looking into the possibility of reinstating a Latin III. The department sponsors a foreign exchange program annually. This year Franklin hosted twelve students from Spain for three weeks, next year, if all goes well, there will be an exchange to Meaux, France. new faculty members include Mrs. Diane Poncz and Mrs. Christine Ockey. In Sewing, students are encouraged to make at least 3 projects a year; in CD 1 2, they Ieam about becoming adults; and in Independent living, they leam how to prepare themselves for being on their own. Home Ec. doesn ' t just deal with food, it deals with life. 95 Industrial Arts The Industrial Arts Department, under the direction of Mr. Ettenhoffer, provides a variety of vocational skills to FMS. Automotives, metals, woods, and tech¬ nical drawing offer many students time to work with their hands, and then show their projects in displays. Ms. Motyle, in her first year as coach, had high expectations for her team. Unfortunately, they weren ' t fulfilled. After winning their first game of the season it looked as though the field hockey team might change last year s losing season into a winning season this year. The Panther s kick Though the Panther Boys were a very young team compared to past years, and were plagued by injuries throughout the season, they managed to do equally as well as they have in the past. With plenty of guidance and direction from Coach, Fran Bositis, and Senior Tri- Captains , Keith Lippert, Sean Halliday, and Mark Brumbaugh, the boys earned second place in the Hockomock League. Also, they made it through rain and mud to the semi-finals of the tournament. The boys played well together and were extremely hard working and dedicated. The one loss was against Canton. This loss prevented the team from winning the league title. The team also had a strong post season, where they placed Fifth in the South Shore Principle Meet. The team will be losing captains, Chris Tattrie and Allan Dwyer, along with other seniors, Gary Hewes, John Sherry and Gavin Stroke. Returning next year will be, Dave Noble, who placed third at the League Championships, and Kevin King, the team ' s second runner. Their spirit and enthusiasm encouraged the Panthers to rally against their opponents. The competition cheerleaders also deserve recognition on their successful season. It is one of the most demanding sports at F.H.S. because of the long and strenuous practices. 119 The golf team was coached by Mr. Butler for the first time. He lead the team through a rebuilding year. Chris Sousa, a senior, was the captain. He kept the spirit high. Joe DePetrillo, a junior, and Matt Maki, a freshman, held the number 2 and 3 positions on the team. Jamie Pisano had an overall winning record. Other member s included Kevin Stephenson, Mark Yadisernia, Todd Baker, Jeff DeLucia, Scott Micol, Kevin Guidi, Scott Hamilton, Chris Pizzi and Doug Kehlhem. Panthers On The Run The Boy ' s Indoor Track Team had a very successful season this year. The team was dominating throughout, winning its first six meets decisively before losing to arch-rival Foxboro in a close, hard fought meet. The team had high hopes for the League Championship and State meets. The team was led by senior Nark Brumbaugh, John Sherry, Nike Wallace, Gavin Strok, and Allan Dwyer, along with juniors Dave Noble and Kevin King, and sophomore Bob Lynch, all of whom accounted for much of the team ' s points and success. The girls team also had their best season in many years. Nany strong performances were given by Nerry Corbett, Paula Thackaberry, Kathy Wallace, and Kathy Shaft. IPt 1 l|p r t I Panthers Take Over The Court This year the Panther girls continued the tradition of excellent girls basketball in Franklin. Coached through an exciting season by Don Cotter, the girls had a strong Finish in the Hockomock League and did well in the state tournament. Senior captain Shelley Dunn and co¬ captains Beth Murray and Marybeth Savicki provided plenty of leadership and guidance on and off the court for the fairly young team. Though the team was as small in number as it was young, and without superstar ' ' Kathy Bonollo for the first year in four, effort was never lacking and the girls continued to live by their motto Franklin never Quits. On The Center Court The Boy ' s Basketball Team was not as successful as they had hoped to be. It was a building and learning year for the team. Despite their set-backs, the players worked together to show their spirit out on the court. The entire team deserves recognition for their outstanding efforts and dedication. This year, the marching band entered its first field competition. The competition was held at Sullivan Stadium and the band played well. Also, the band marched at the Eastern States Exposition Fair for the second year in a row. There was no judging there, but the band played well in the Massachusetts Day Parade, and also enjoyed the day at the fair. Mrs. Lissie did a great job with the colorguard, which helped the band look very impressive. The colorguard captain was Jen Matyi. The band was present at every football game except one this year. They cheered the team on and gave the Panthers a lot of support. Back row from left to right: Suzanne Perry, Jennifer Matyi, Janet Qaede, Lisa Qaede. Their hard work pays off as they perform in concerts, at the Central District Music Festival, and special events such as graduation. As usual, the chorus did an excellent job this year, and we can look forward to many more of their superb performances. The Sound of Music The band room is open after school for students to practice their instruments. On Mondays after school the Stage Band meets with Mrs. Howard . The Stage Band plays jazz and modern rock and they perform in a few concerts each year. The availability of the band room gives the music students an excellent facility in which to work on their talents. Faces In The Arts The art rooms at FHS have always been a place where students succeed, because art students are encouraged to work outside of class. Mr. MacPhee ' s and Mrs. Crowley s rooms are always open, and their creative environments allow serious art students to expand on their creativity. 148 149 OEA The Office Education Association allows students who are in business classes to show their office skills in competition. Students are able to compete in vari¬ ous office related categories at Regional, State, and national levels. The OEA gives students the chance to see what their potential jobs are like. Our first job was to refile the papers and folders that laid infront of C-house office, as the result of dropping the file cabinet down the stairs. But things picked up rapidly; members attended a three day conference at Bryant College in July. Others spent summer days selling ads. Once school started in September our work increased steadily. Cameras were constantly clicking, layouts being drawn, while others were busy writing copy. Much of our success can be accredited to Mr. Vaillancourt who guided us page by page. 154 rnamm lip 5 v. -- -t llI | V ' - ■ ■ x ' «•;, . V ■ • -. . ■ X .. $ • . ■-. L ?£k?. ' ■■ Oskey 1986 % t n-■%. They were all invited to the State Finals of the Massachusetts Academic Decathlon which was held at Wayland High School on February 7th. F.H.S. earned its invitation by finishing 8th in the preliminaries held at Cambridge Rindge and Latin in November. The Academic Decathlon is a unique, and very exciting competition which requires well-roundedness from its competitors who compete in 10 academic events. Written tests in economics, fine arts, English, math, science and social studies are followed by an essay competition, two public speaking events, and the final, electrifying Super Quiz. The Super Quiz takes place in a gymnasium with cheerleaders, a band and a large, boisterous audience. But the points are scored in economics, futurism or the Constitution. Each team has an equal number of A , B and C students. 157 Foreign Language Club names riot Available The Foreign Language Club welcomed the Spanish exchange students who spent three weeks with host families. Marileen McCormick knows first hand. She and her husband moved to Franklin from Yap, a Caroline Island located near the Philippines, in Decem¬ ber of 1986. Snow is something that most of us take for granted, but for Marileen it was a special treat. What is it? was her first reaction. Marileen soon learned to build snowmen and to shovel driveways. The temperature difference has been a big adjustment. In Yap the temperature is usually 80 °F all year round. Not only is the weather different, but also the life style. Coconut, fish, taro, and tapioca are among Yap ' s native foods. The entertainment consists of many festive dances. These dances are complete with costumes and music. Even the buildings look different to Marileen. The buildings in Yap are constructed with concrete. Summer houses are made from coconut and palm leaves. This gives the island of Yap a special atmosphere. Unlike Boston, buildings are usually one or two stories. It took Marileen some time to get used to Boston ' s skyscrapers. It has been a pleasure to have Marileen at F.H.S. It is not often that one gets a chance to learn about different cultures. We have learned a great deal about Yap, and we thank her for sharing her experiences with us. The Class of 1987 wishes Marileen and her family the best of luck. It ' s A Small World Learning Spanish and French vocabu¬ lary and grammar may seem tedious and insignificant, but when one has no other choice but to speak the language, it all seems worth while. The Foreign Exchange Program that F.H.S. has with Meaux, France, and Elche, Spain, pro¬ vides the opportunity for students to make life-time friends. Students find that living with a host family or hosting a stu¬ dent can be very exciting and rewarding. At times the language barriers or differ¬ ent lifestyles may present challenges, but with a little extra effort, everything seems to work out. These travelers will never forget walks along the Seine, or the sight of the Palace of Madrid. 161 Front Row: Wei-en Chang, Dawn LaRochelle, Heather Pisani, Michelle Brown, Phil Risaino. Back Row: Liz Sottile, Pam Parenteau, Kristen Cameron, Janet Qaede, Susan Foster, Elizabeth Sardella. The speech team, coached by Ms. Duncan, has once again had a very successful year. Many hours were spent perfecting every de¬ tail. It is because of this detail that Franklin ' s team is known throughout the state for their excellence. The contestants compete in both reading and memorized categories. Poetry, prose, children s lit. and play reading are among the most popular. Competing in these areas gives students an oppurtunity to perfect their acting and reading skills, and at the same time make friends from around the state. Congratulations to a job well done. A Special Friend Reprinted with the permission of the Country Gazette, Franklin, MA. A Special Friend Two hundred and thirty-three students will have graduated in June holding many special memories. Some may be about the Junior Prom or an athletic tournament, but at this time we should also remember those who have helped us grow and appreciate our accomplishments. The entire staff at F.H.S. deserves recognition, but one teacher that stands out in particular is Mrs. Ligon. Mrs. Ligon was the Teacher of the Year in Franklin. She deserves this title more than anyone we know. Caring, energetic, and dedicated are only a few ways to describe her. Any student who sat in B-210 knows Mrs. Ligon not only as a teacher who taught them adverbial clauses, but also as a friend. Her warm personality made it easy for students to talk with her. Many times it was only guidance or inspiration that we needed, but she was there for us. Outside of the classroom, she continued to care about the student body. As advisor to the Student Council, she dedicated a great deal of her time to the organization of blood mobiles, dances, and the Olympics. Somehow, she has taught us to be mature adults who can now look back and thank her. Mrs. Ligon, many thanks for being such a special friend to the Class of 1987. Staff: Mary Bymes-Layouts and ads. Our work seemed endless at times, but we have done our best and created a book which we hope you will be proud of. Many thanks must be given to Joe Geoffrey, our photographer, from Chestnut Hill Studios. He found the time to take the pictures at our sporting events and other important occasions. He was ready to help us out at a moment ' s notice. Dan Smith, our Josten ' s representative, was also extremely patient and helpful throughout our ordeal. He was there to keep us on schedule and to supervise our work. We could not have managed without his help. Raye Lynn Mercer Padula deserves great recognition for her outstanding efforts in the OSKEY 1987 Production. We appreciate all of her hard work because without the proceeds from this production, our yearbook would not be possible. To the Class of 1987- We hope that you will look back on this book and remember all of the memories that you have had during the past four years. They are moments that you should never forget. We hope you will overlook any mistakes that have been made, because we have sincerely tried our best. COnGRATULATIOnS TO THE CLASS OE 1987! Christine, Susan, Pam Editors, OSKEY 1987 P.S.
