Mi Ā ' Senior Section Curriculutn Sports ()rganizations Activities I There ' s alot of History to Our Freshmen! They are often used as scapegoats, punching bags, and are the victims of unkind remarks. Through time there have been many who have become great leaders from humble beginnings. Such is the case of the Class of 1980, the Class With Class . To earn a nickname like that, there were long hours of work, planning, and pride displayed. As Freshmen, we were entering a new stage in life at the lowest stage in school. There were more responsibilities, mounting pressures, and new challenges to take on, for it was time to grow up. Our first objective was to elect class officers and then to start planning some fund raisers. In late September, our first idea for raising money was introduced: the class dues card. If your dues were paid up, you could use the card to get into a class function for half-price. This had to be our worst idea but happened to be our first. In October 1976, we scheduled our first dance which turned out great! It seemed as though the whole school showed up to hear some mellow music, boogie all night, or rap with their friends. We definitely made some good money on that dance. In December, we entered the hall decorating contest sponsored by the school. Because of our lavish decorations near the language labs, we came in fourth place with a dazzling display of yuletide festivities. Our first semester of supervised study was spent in the cold, barren Lecture Hall, the place with no backs on the seats. Supervised study is a tactic used until freshmen establish themselves with the high school and make their transition from the barbaricness of Jr. High. Our officers talked to Mr. Evans about the possibility of dropping it, if our class, as a whole, did well academically during the first semester, and by some miracle we did! Within a week, we were enjoying the privilege of either library or cafeteria study, in which we were able to groove to the jukebox. The month of April brought us our first semi- formal function as a class. It was our spring banquet in the cafeteria and the variational group that played was the fabulous Pyramid Energy. All of the men of ' 80 were dressed to kill with their 3-piece suits and the girls were looking good in everything they were wearing. Pyramid Energy and the Italian food, kept us entertained and the holiday atmosphere was festive. We entered our last month as Freshmen with big plans. Our main objective was to enter the annual flea market and to make enough money to go on a class trip. There was a lot of junk to be sold at the flea market, which was held in the field house. However, with our great class participation, we raised enough money for our first class trip to Rocky Point in Warwick, Rl, where a fine time was had by all. Now the anticipation of becoming sophomores was mounting. Summer finally came and our second year in high school was rapidly approaching. Sophomore year. September 1977 sparked the beginning of our next year in high school, although the teacher ' s strike, which lasted two weeks, hit us off to a slow start. The Silly Sophomores, as the cheerleaders proclaimed, were carefree and high spirited, leading us to claim first spirit award at the September Pep Rally. In October, we held a very successful raffle for an AM FM clock radio, who ' s profits set the foundation for our Bowling Party in November. The Class of ' 80 rocked the whole Gaynor Bowling Lanes in Millis that night, and we continued to show our high spirit at our November dance in honor of the arrival of the French Students. Chimes and bells set the mood for the winter season, and for the Sophomore ' s Christmas Party. Our casual apparel, high spirited vitality, and Santa Claus made the evening a night to remember. We gained the title The Class With Class in April, the month in which we finally received our class rings. Now we were official members of Franklin High, and we wore them with pride to prove it. On April 25th, we had our Spring Banquet at the Elks, where we tripped the light - fantastic, munched out on an impeccable chicken dinner, and grooved to the music of Senior Class planning and getting money for the prom was definitely not wasted for it was quite a night! Now for our future. We took our tests and started to think about college and life after high school. With the new superintendant we had to think about our senior year, so the Student Advisory Council was formed. The students interests were presented to Dr. Marcus and the school committee. A lot of plans and policies were discussed, which benefitted both the administration and us. Junior year. Hey, we ' re upperclassmen now, no longer looked down upon, but looked up to as the elite, and boy did we act like it! The decisions we made, the activities we participated in, and the leadership of our officers, all helped us mature greatly in our junior year. Most of our activities were either directed to raising money or raising hell. With all the parties and fun we had, it ' s a wonder we took SAT ' s at all. The Turkey Day and the clock radio raffles netted the Class With Class a great deal of money. The flea market that we sponsored brought in great profits and also showed the togetherness of the class, for a lot of teamwork went into making this flea market successful. Lollipop and flower day were not only a blast, but they spiced up some ongoing relationships, and created others. Nonstop concession stands and bake sales also provided the class with a valuable source of income that year. A big change that was almost unnoticed through all the activities of our junior year was the incoming of a new advisor. Mr. Chase moved away and was most aptly replaced by Mr. Walter Feldman, our favorite guidance counselor at the high school. He not only served as our advisor but remained as a friend to us all. Most of our junior year was spent preparing for the prom. Though we had many other activities, the prom, held at the fabulous White Cliffs Mansion, took precedent over everything else. All who attended agreed that it was an excellent affair. Because everyone looked so dazzling and debonair, we were all named king and queen. It was a night that will always be remembered. Everyone there truly agreed that all the effort put into Stack Mediros. June was the month in which the class with class ventured to Riverside Amusement Park where the loop coaster proved fatal to those without guts. We also made moocho bucks in the annual flea market that June. This event completed our activities for the year and now we were ready to leave for the summer, in order to return as upperclassmen!! fiVMlfS gky J r A 8 n V B iJ The Junior Prom was a ssW T -l rr ā€œ : ā–  • jk.jn JS| • P : : 1 mj- 1 1 uil. Bruce Bennett When our previous advisor had left F.H.S. at the end of our Sophomore year, we were pretty scared that no one would want to follow in his foot steps. However, Mr. Feldman came to the rescue and gave us all a spiritual lift with his crazy personality, devout understanding and continual eagerness to help all at request. For this reason, I ' ve been very fortunate these past two years, for I not only had the pleasure of knowing Wally Feldman the Guidance Counselor but also W.W. the highly unique individual. There are so many things to be grateful for, but most of all thanks for being you!! Love, Linda Watkins. Mr. Feldman: Being class advisor and Guidance counselor may have seemed like a lot to handle, but you have filled both jobs exceptionally. You ' ve made my high school years and my college years promising. Thank you for all the time, devotion, and concern which you have given me. Love, Patti Keville Lollipops for your sweetheart. Hot dogs for the fans. Helped raise the millions that Cardosi would have loved to pocket! But those are just a few things that come to mind when ... I think of the hours of hard work and fun we had with the class of ' 80. Thanks for not worrying and for letting the dollar signs disappear from your eyes when we insisted money and time weren ' t a problem. I ' ll remember the good talks and words of wisdom that kept my act together when I could have gone to pieces. Love, Dianne Denommee. There are so many great things that could be said about Mr. Feldman. He ' s done more than any of us had ever aspired. He was always there when we needed a friend. Thanks for the great memories we ' ve shared. I ' m so glad to have been a part of them. Love, Kathy 64 Mr. William Fiske I ' ve known Mr. Fiske for four years now and to me he is more than a teacher or a yearbook advisor, he is a close friend. If you ' re in trouble, or you need advice about something he is the man to see. Especially, if you ' re in the market for stereos. He is a great influence on me and has helped me through out my high school years. I consider myself a very fortunate individual to work under such a great man and be able to know him so well. John Haidis. Mr. Fiske, (also affectionately known as Fiskie) without your sense of humor, warmth, and calmness this book wouldn ' t be possible. Thank you for sticking with us through chaos. You ' re terrific! This year has been both a learning and fun experience. Love Barbara I have known Mr. Fiske for four years as a teacher, and advisor, but most importantly as a friend. His guidance has helped me get through my four years of high school. I hate to think of what it would be like with out you. Thanks fisko. John Hancock Fiskie is best described as a light house in a storm. When you ' re in trouble, look to him for an answer and he ' ll do his best to find it for you. Not only was he irreplaceable in keeping the yearbook on its feet, but he kept me on mine in my four years of high school. I am beholden to him. Gregg Kober At this time, I would like to take the opportunity to thank Mr. William Fiskie Fiske, for the time he has given towards the yearbook. Without his time, this book would of not achieved such success. A lot of fun memories will always be remembered from the production of Oskey 80 ' , the hassles, the deadlines, in-school field trips, but most of all you; when ever we needed you, you were there. Thanks-Again. Love, Donna P.S. You think this year was good, wait till next! 65 So there you have it, the members of the class of 1980. At this point, you ' ve heard our history, and you ' ve viewed the different talents of each individual. Now let ' s take a look at the result of our binding, what an F.H.S. student is really all about. r 4 n ' Wm . 1 B - - ' I V On November 4, 1979, an embassy take over occured in Tehran by a band of 400 Iranian students chanting Death to America and Death to the Shah and Carter . This was in response to the take over in government by the Ayatollah Khomeini and a reversion back to the sayings of Imam which called for a trial of the deposed Shah of Iran. Originally at the embassy siege, 65 hostages were taken into custody, but within a month 13 were released. Eight black men and five women were freed because of Khomeini ' s professed respect for women and oppressed blacks. Two women and a black man were left behind with the other 46 hostages who the students wanted to try for espionage, with the death penalty a possibility. The militant students holding the embassy warned that if the United States took military action against them, all the American hostages will be destroyed . Iranian students in America staged protests against the United State government and were met with vindictive contempt. Vengeful Americans jeered Deport! The Shah lay in his New York hospital bed with a tube protruding from his stomach and a fresh incision in his leg where a suspected tumorous growth had been removed earlier in the week. He needed another operation for the removal of gallstones. The Shah offered to leave the United States and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat offered him a place to stay, but in view of the Shah ' s critical medical condition, there was no chance that he could be moved. Carter cut off direct American imports of Iranian oil, sky-rocketing the price of gas. And when the Iranian government decided to withdraw its money from United States banks, Carter beat Tehran to the punch by imposing a freeze on its assets. This crisis inflated President Carter ' s status among the American public which could only help his re-election campaign. Others said he was doing the same thing he had done about everything, but this time it just happened to be the right thing to do. When the Iowa caucus was held early in 1980 there were the following candidates for president. Senator Edward M. Kennedy, George Bush, Ronald Regan, John Connally, Howard Baker, and John Anderson, besides Jimmy Carter. With Russia invading Afganastan, America threatened to pull out of the Summer Olympics, which were to be held in Moscow, unless Russia pulled out of Afganastan or the Olympics were moved. Tempers flared on both sides of the issue. The Winter Games came to the United States to Lake Placid, New York. An estimated 13,000 athletes from around the globe would be participating in these games in New York. Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner would be up against Russia ' s Irna Rodvnia and Aleksaudr Zaitseu in the skating pairs competition. The brother-sister tandem of Eric and Beth Heiden were fome favorites in speed skating. The United States ' Linda Fratianne was the favorite to win the ladies ' singles in skating as Dorothy Hammil had four years ago. Charlie 1979 closed the final year of what critics carped the Me Decade . In UNICEF ' s International Year of the Child, the United States discovered the limits of its power, scenes outside shifted, the Mideast flares, Iran erupted, and as always there were the horrors of Indochina, with the desperation of the boat people and the loving death of Cambodia. President Jimmy Carter ' s status briefly rose with his six day shuttle between Cairo and Jerusalem producing peace agreements ending 30 years of war; Begin and Sadat signed the accords in Washington. In Vienna, Carter and Leonid Brezhney of the USSR concluded the SALT II treaty. The Polish Pope John Paul II made a pilgrimage of hope to Mexico and a triumphant state visit to his homeland. In America, he drew adoring millions and became the first Pope to visit the White House. U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young resigned under fire after lying to the State Department about his covert contact with the Palestine Liberation Organization. The Shah of Iran left his Kindgom; the exiled Ayatollah Khomeini returned in triumph to proclaim an Islamic republic. President-for-life Idi Amin was ousted by Tanzanian and Ugandan-exile troops. Radioactive steam escaped from Pennsylvania ' s Three Mile Island power plant in the worst commercial nuclear accident in U.S. history. The accident breathed new life into the anti-nuke movement. Skylab ' s crash landing back to earth sprayed debris over Australia, but took no lives. The Gossamer Albatross became the first manpowered airplane to fly across the English Channel. Britian elected Margaret Thatcher its first woman Prime Minister. Worldwide fears about the American recession triggered unprecedented jumps in gold prices. Tickner had a good shot at the gold in men ' s. The youngest United States hockey team ever, molded after the peerless Soviets- skating to open ice, crisscrossing, always moving would go up against the four time gold metal winning USSR. In the women ' s downhill, United States ' Cindy Nelson and teammate Heidi Preuss were expected to be tough, while Liectenstein was predicted to sweep many of the slope events. Other bright spots on the United States ' winter team were Bill Koch in the 15-Kilometer cross-country event and )im Denney in the 70-meter ski jumping. For the Chrysler Corporation, the past year was the worst in their history as they went bankrupt losing more money than any previous cooperation. The Senate Banking Committee pledged a $1.5 billion Federal loan to breathe life into the company. In january of 1980, Canadians hit it big with Americans by releasing 6 members of the attacked United States embassy whom they had kept in hiding for over 3 months. The lucky six were smuggled out of Iran via Canadian passports. The American public responded with great thanks. In many parts of the country radio stations played the Canadian National anthem simutaneously the day after their release. Appocalypse Now was an outstanding film of the year 1979, as were Breaking Away . Recent blockbusters have been Kramer vs. Kramer with Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep fighting over custody of their son, 10 , introducing the first sex symbol of the 80 ' s, Bo Derek, The Jerk , with wild and craaazy Steve Martin being born a poor black child and going from rags to riches to rags, The Rose staring Bette Midler as a blues-belting rockstar of the ' 60 ' s and the Unhumanly Possible comedy, The Muppet Movie starring Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy- Fifty year conductor of the Boston Pops Arthur Fiedler died in 1979, marking the end of a legend. America also bid the Duke good-bye when John Wayne made a final ride into the sunset. 72 year old Wayne an American simile with pride was mourned across the country. In December of 1979, a stampede at a Who concert in Cincinnati resulted in the deaths of eleven people who suffocated in the crash. The wild melee was due to 7,000 fans holding unreserved general admission tickets all determined to get the best seats in the first- come first-serve time of admission system. Rollerskating became an overnight fad, sweeping the country onto wheels. Regular skating arenas with organ music transformed into flashy roller-discos. Disco faded out and a new type of music, New Wave invaded the rock sce ne. 69 Administration Mr. Evans Mr. Quinlan Administration reigns the school of wis¬ dom, thought, and truth. EXPERIENCE is the word it is often described as - and an appropriate adjective it is! For lunior Miss is perhaps one of few opportunities that young girls have to express their thoughts and display their talents. You do not have to be a model, or show a plastic smile; you simply have to be yourself! lunior Miss should not be called a beauty pageant for that often implies physical beauty - what lunior Miss is ... is a scholarship organization. The beauty and charisma of the program lies in the participants, for each contestant is a very beautiful and special girl. The 1980 junior Miss participants are: Robin Bucchanio, Michelle Moran (5), jeanette McGrath (3), Wendy Romaine (12), Susan Ariel (9 Giardino (8), Mary Beth Rondeau, Mary lord (12) Lombardi (4,12), Lisa Arruda (10), Nancy Mills (11), Cameron (1), Laurie DeGrazia, Donna Laquidara (2 Michelle Shannon (2), Lauren Laviolette (6,12), Karen Feyler (12), and Dianne Denommee (7).
