It’s Happening Our school newspaper, It’s Happen¬ ing,” represents exactly what its title implies. This year the quality of the newspaper has improved noticeably due to the amount of effort which the staff exerts monthly to produce a paper which reports what’s Happen¬ ing” and a little extra, too. The person behind the drive is editor, Debbie Roach, who definitely merits praise for her persistence for perfection. Last year the paper received an award for The most candid and Open Newspa¬ per.” Who knows? DECA DECA identities the program of youth activity relating to Distributive Education Clubs of America, and is de¬ signed to develop future leaders for marketing and dis¬ tributions. DECA is the only national youth organiza¬ tion operating through the public schools to attract young people to careers in marketing and distribution. Purposes are (1) To develop a respect for education in marketing and distribution which will contribute to oc¬ cupational competence, and (2) to promote under¬ standing and appreciation for the responsibilities of cit¬ izenship in our free, competitive enterprise system. The DE students of Franklin High School have as their major project the opening of a school store for the benefit of the student body and for themselves. The store is primarily serving as a laboratory for the DE students to learn all the retailing techniques neces¬ sary in running and operating a business and to devel¬ op future leaders for marketing and distribution. 130 Officers: Debbie Sherman, Linda Staves, Karen Woodrow, Janice Peterson. Advisor: Mrs. Reizian. Senior Members: Judy Wilson, Donna Burke, Cathy Costello, Marilyn Spencer, Mary Harvey, Paula Pironti, and Kathy McDermott. The Future Teachers The Future Teachers Club is composed of students who are interested in entering the teaching profession. The purpose of the club is to introduce the members to the field of teaching. This is done in many ways, and in the students free time. In the past, the members have acted as aides in the elementary classrooms, chap¬ eroned field trips, and have tutored their own class¬ mates. Other activities include: field trips to various colleges, career conferences, acting as guides at the Norfolk County Teachers Convention, entertaining other FTC groups in the area, and participating in state Future Teachers Club activities. The club also grants a small scholarship to a deserving senior who is a club member. I Officers: Debbie Larson, Linda Fitzgerald, Joanne Sweeney, Donna Greene. They were the key in every football game. When the defense was hot, the offense perked up and played a great game. The defense, the best in the league, caused many turnovers for the offense to handle. Interceptions, blocked punts, and fumble recoveries, were a main repetoire to the Big d; The Offensive Attack The offensive ' machine’ was one of brilliance and teamwork. After many hours of work during heated practices, all the as¬ pects of football were put together. Passing , running, receiv¬ ing, and the front-line blocking were for the most part well- balanced, and contributed to the team’s success. In once again another successful season Coach Le¬ one’s team trampled through their 25th win in a row, giving them the longest winning streak in the state. Outstanding performances during the season were 17 interceptions, one shy of the team record, Franny Allen going over the 1,000-yard mark in rushing, the team being number 1 in league offense and defense, and Keith Perron passing for over 700 yards. Among the outstanding individual game per¬ formances was Kevin Hill’s 75-yard punt return for a touchdown against North Attleboro, Ernie Mil¬ ler’s 8 receptions against Canton and Franny Allen having over 200 yards and 3 touchdowns against Foxboro. Soccer 1971 -j This past year the soccer team was only 4-8-1, but this record is not indicative of the team’s play. To prove this all one has to do is look at the goals for and goals against figures. The Panthers scored 27 goals and gave up only 28. So if they had a few breaks here and there they could have easily had a .500 season. To top their year off, they scored a victory over the league champions, Quincy. 159 Steve Lozzi Matt Buchanio David Cairns Ed Malinowicz 160 Roy Scipione Robin Rizzi Maurice Herbert Artie Keefe Cross-Country Last season’s cross country team’s main problem was a lack of experience. They had only three seniors on the squad, but they did make respectable showings in each meet. Cross-country will be looking for better things to happen next year. Co-captains Howie King, Randy Hancock, and Coach Correia. uson The basketball team, handicapped with a tremendous lack of height and some costly injuries, had a poor season. But among all the troubles the play of some talented underclassmen gave hope for the success of future teams. 1 Winter Track 1972 The Winter Track Team gave fine performances in both the Hockamock and Tri-County leagues. Their only loss in the Hockamock was to Can¬ ton by a slim three points. 164 Jim DiCecco Winter Track Seniors 166 i i Brian Young Kevin Hill Shaun Gilmore 4i Matt Buchanio 0M Joe Molinaro David Walls Ed Malinowicz Randy Hancock Tony Venturoso Dennis Salvucci Rocco Taddeo Howie King Hockey — 1972 New Enthusiasm Co-captains Ed Porier, Kevin Reagan, John Mit¬ chell, and Coach Olsen. The Varsity The expansion of Franklin High sports this season brought to the scene an ice hockey team, led by Coach Olsen. The team which was placed in the tough Southeastern League played very well for a considerably young team. The team made-up of mostly freshmen and sophomores showed promise for upcoming years, because even this past season they won more than they were expected to win. Baseball — 1971 More Success The baseball team of 1971 was something of delight to watch. They won their third consecutive Hockamock League crown with a strong 15-1 record in league play, and they beat Barnstable and lost to Fairhaven in their tourna¬ ment. Now, even though losing most of their pitching staff, the Panthers are back for a fourth crown in a row.
