The choicest gifts That heaven hath kindly lent to earth Are ever first to seek again The country of their birth. And all things that for growth or joy Are worthy of our love or care, Whose loss has left us desolate, Are safely garnered there. Though life become a desert waste. We know its fairest, sweetest flowers, Transplanted into Paradise, Adorn immortal bowers. And ever near us, Though unseen, The dear, immortal spirits tread— For all the boundless universe Is Life—There are no dead! J. L. Our Sophomore year During our sophomore year we sponsored a very successful Valentine’s Dance. Our junior year One of the most exciting events of our junior year took place when we received our class rings. This was when we really began to feel like upperclassmen and big wheels’’. ■ ■ • % ' 14 April Showers Our class has always had the quality of individualism. Our prom broke all established tradition of previous proms in two distinct ways. An innovation this year was the de¬ cision to move the prom date from May back to April. Although popular opinion was against this idea, we began decorating diligently thereafter and the results were well worth the effort. An even more unique innovation was the decision to elect a Junior girl Prom Queen, a highlight which we hope will become a tradition. The first queen was Jean Ellen Keras, who we hope will place the crown upon this year’s successor to the throne. Prom Queen Sean Sllett keras i 1JI A ; n . ■1 J Dedicating our yearbook was a difficult task for us, in that we could not decide upon any one person; the success of our class has depended upon many. We finally decided that the two greatest contributors to our class were our two advisors. Mr. Harrison, our first advisor, helped us to survive the perils of our freshman year. His guidance and endeavors inspired us to organize ourselves, and assume the respon¬ sibility of a high school class. His warm smile and friendly personality will never be forgotten. Upon Mr. Harrison’s departure, Mr. McCall assumed the responsibility of guiding our class. Mr. McCall was always there and ready to brighten up the darkest situation with his Southern humor and helpful hand. His counsel has proven invaluable in enabling us to overcome the problems of managing the affairs of the class of 1966. Therefore we take this time to dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Harrison and Mr. McCall for service beyond the call of duty. We feel this is the least we can do to repay them for their generous efforts. The Co-Editors MR. HERMAN C. McCALL Ministration TO THE CLASS OF 1966: You face a future full of challenge. You need all the personal resources possible to make your future bright. I i S ft I I The main purpose and objective of the Student Council is to act as a representative of the students themselves. Under the leadership of Mr. Quinlan, the Student Council has per¬ formed and instituted many useful and worthwhile activities. The Student Council has made available to the students a suggestion box whereby the students may voice their opinions and suggestions that might promote school effectiveness. By sponsoring a dance and by selling refreshments at football games, the Student Council has been able to award, at graduation, a scholarship in memory of John F. Kennedy. Also, during the Christmas season, funds were collected by this group to add Christmas cheer to the elderly people in nursing homes in Franklin. The Student Council has hopes of greater accomplishments and under Mr. Quinlan’s leadership we know that they will be fulfilled. Marshals Zkc Rational Manor Society The Junior Honor Society and fhe Senior Honor Society have recently merged to form the National Honor Society. The members of this club must possess the qualities of leadership, citizenship, service, schol¬ arship, and character. Each year the Honor Society gives a scholarship to a deserving senior, and one who contributes greatly to the fund raising drives. Its members also work jointly with the Student Council at football games selling refreshments. The Honor Society’s role in school affairs has always been very important and will continue to be so in the future. James Cochrane, treasurer; Diane Pepin, secretary; William Weidman, president; Mr. Rainville, advisor; Susan Freniere, vice president. The Drama Club, under the advisor- ship of Miss Bernardo, was revived this year at F.H.S. after a year’s absence. This group is believed to be the largest in the school with sixty active members. The thespians’ first major endeavor was the entertainment at the annual Hallow¬ een Dance. Here the entire student body was given an opportunity to enjoy the talented efforts of club members. The club’s major spring project is par¬ ticipation in the annual Massachusetts State Drama Festival. Miss Bernardo, advisor; Elizabeth Hagopian, secretary; Kathleen Burke, president; Julie Keefe, vice president; Kathleen Cameron, treasurer. Wand The high school band meets every Monday, Wednesday; and Friday during the activity period, to rehearse for its various activities. Under the fine direction of Mr. Iacovelli, it improves each year. During the early fall the band concentrates on half-time entertainment for the football games, and it also provides music for the pep rallies. With the end of football season comes the beginning of Christmas music for the Christmas concert and the school assembly. After Christmas the band plays a variety of music for spring concerts, exchanges concerts with other high school bands, and occasional in various school programs. The band marches in local parades and has participated in the high school graduation exercises. Drill Zeam The Drill Team is commanded by Captain Elena Rovani and assistant Roberta Bubnowicz, under the supervision of Mrs. LaSala. It is composed of thirty- two girls from all four classes. The team marches at all the football games, both home and away. In the Spring the team march es in the Horace Mann and Memorial Day Parades. This year the team has been transformed into a Pep Club during the basketball season to support the cheerleaders and the basketball team. The Drill Team has had cake and candy sales to raise money for new uniforms, which they hope to have by the end of this year. Chorus The chorus directed by Mr. Iacovelli, is comprised of approximately sixty girls. The girls entertain at school and social functions such as the Christmas concert, and sing in the Alden Club program with the Junior High Chorus. The chorus serves as a background for the Oskey singers and goes on exchange programs with the band to other schools such as Nipmuc Regional High School. This year a special chorus has been established, made up of twenty girls, that sing numbers alone and with the rest of the chorus. I 18 Commercial Club The Commercial Club is com¬ posed of senior students from the business department. The selling of candy bars every Friday and at school functions has enabled the club to donate a scholarship each year to one of its members. At the end of the year the Commercial Club dines in Boston and attends a play. Throughout the year members are afforded opportunities to deal with children through the public school system. The club holds fund raising projects of which cake sales are the most popular. The funds raised from these projects are used to benefit a scholarship which is awarded to a senior at graduation that is a member of the club. Mr. DiLibero, advisor; Martha Stack, treasurer; Gayle D’Amelio, vice president; Cynthia DiPietro, president; Dianne Villani, historian; Donna Woods, parliamentarian; Kathleen VanLeeuwen, secretary. Juture purses The Future Nurses’ Club is open to any student interested in a career in the medical field. It is one of the most active clubs in the school socially and otherwise. Its members work in homes for the aged and the child clinic in Franklin not to mention the catering service started this year. This innovation was begun to raise money for a scholarship to be given at graduation to a deserving mem¬ ber entering the field of nursing. The club meets once a month under the direction of Mrs. McManus. The Latin Club, although in its first year of existence, has a large and active membership. Its aim is to acquaint the Latin students with the many aspects of ancient Rome. This year the Latin Club, under the able supervision of Mrs. Ken¬ ney, put on a highly successful bookfair. It joined forces with Spanish Club and gave a Christ¬ mas party. Speakers have been brought in to address the students on many subjects. We are sure the club will continue to grow through the years. 122 Spanish The Spanish Club, a recently formed organization, blends pleasure with work and is expanding rapidly. It is very active in school functions and it increases its own knowledge and culture by means of films and speakers. Although it is still in its infancy, the Spanish Club will continue to grow if it has the same school support in the future as it has now. While a winning record still proved to be an evasive reality, the girls willingly performed their tasks with a hearty, never-say-die attitude. Early in the ten game season, the teams met separately to elect captains. Miss Sandy Xenos was chosen to guide the junior varsity and the Misses Sherrie Hading, and Susan Monier co-captained the varsity squad. Then, under the ever watchful eye of freshman coach Miss Marjorie DuMoulin, the girls pro¬ ceeded to master those skills which make Franklin’s team a real threat to the League’s leader in future years, even as they practiced those personal traits of fair play associated with the fine lady and the hardy athlete. For the first time in the eight years that Franklin High has been a member of this league, the team finished in third place with an outstanding 11-5 record. Though the team was few in number, each member contributed much to its success. A commendable job was done by Coach Bonollo, who was certainly rewarded by the fine record the team achieved. The League is composed of such good teams as Danvers, Canton, Chelmsford and Catholic Memorial, just to name a few. A highlight of the year was our undefeated junior Phil Wood, winning 8 consecutive meets in the 50 yard dash and 300 yard mn. 147 We, the co-editors of the 1966 Oskey, wish to say that in spite of all the frustrations, frantic hours and disappointments, we have to admit that we would be glad to assume the responsibility of the job again. In connection with the yearbook, we know that the area in which we have most gained is that of a closer relationship with the entire high school. We feel that we have gained insight into th e true spirit of Franklin High and each of the three of us has profited from this experience in his own way. We think that this is the proper spot to thank all of our staffs for the work they have done and everyone else who has helped to produce this yearbook. 148 LITERARY STAFF SEATED: Dianne Villani, Christine Jacques, Editor Susan Turco, Diane Pep¬ in, Julie Keefe.
