CLASS HISTORY by Bette Heaton As I stepped out onto the pavement, the bright¬ ness of the sun blinded me. I started down the walk and then I turned and gazed at the building I had just left. It was quiet now, but by tonight it would be bursting at the seams with excitement and hurried confusion. I was lost in thought when I was interrupted by a voice saying, “Wake up, Bette.” I turned and faced one of my classmates. “Oh, hi Nancy,” I answered. “I was just thinking about the past four years.” “I know,” she said. “I guess we all are. Well, see you tonight kid. “You bet. So lo ng Nan.” Once again I started for home. As I walked along, my mind drifted lazily back to the day I first entered High School. I laughed to myself as 1 remembered how scared I was. We all were! Our first big event was Freshman Acquaintance day. The initiation was loads of fun and the Sen¬ iors really weren’t as bad as we expected. After we gained a little self-confidence, we got down to business and elected our class officers. They were: President JOHN PRINCIPESSA Vice President MIRIAM SIMS Secretary JOAN WAMBOLT Treasurer ALFRED ANDERSON We asked one of the new teachers, Mrs. Taylor, to be our class advisor. We made a good choice as she was a wonderful help and a competent leader. We finished our Freshman year in June and felt that we had made a good start towards tackling the next three years. I remembered how successful our Sophomore year was. We elected new class officers. John Ai- mone was chosen President; Patty Vozzella, Vice President; Nancy Simon, Secretary; and Alfred Anderson was voted in to serve his second year as Treasurer. Our first project as sophomores was to rent a bus for the football game at Swansea. Patty Voz¬ zella and Nancy Simon acted as Chairmen. Next came the Thanksgiving Day dance, which turned out to be a moderate success. In order to add to our class treasury, we conducted a successful food sale at the Electric Company. During this year we played parts of Hillbillies in a talent assembly. The song. “Feudin’, Fussin’. and Fightin’,” came in second. Not only were our boys active in all sports this year, but one of our girls, Joanie Langston, was elected to the cheering squad. Yes sir. I thought that was a good year for us. Still, I believe our Junior year was the year that held the most meaning for us. We were almost Seniors then, and it was the year that signified that we had half of our High School days behind us. Now we really began to work in earnest. We made a good start by stealing the Christmas Dance from the Seniors. It went over very well, in spite of the icy and snowy weather. Then came the an¬ nouncement we were all waiting for. We were going to order our class rings! The style we chose was completely different. They came in January, and we were all proud of them. Then the school organized a Student Council. Julia Benghi, Anne Pasquino, and Phil Ray were elected to represent our class. John Aimone, our class President, was elected Treasurer of the Student Council. Two

more of our girls. Pat Genoa and Marlene Clark, were chosen in the Junior year for cheerleaders. John Aimone and Paul Costello were elected Co- Captains of basketball. John Principessa and Robert Pisano were elected Co-Captains of football. Now. 1 remembered, came the biggest event of our Junior year, the Prom. The whole class worked together to make this Prom a success. The theme was, “Under Paris Skies. The walls were deco¬ rated with murals of Paris and it really looked grand. It turned out to be the best Prom in many years as well as a great financial success. The Oskey that year was really sensational. Members of our class did their parts by singing in sextet, dancing and pantomiming. There was one unhappy event that year for us. Our Class Advisor, Mrs. Taylor, after three years of unfailing support, was leaving. To show our gratitude for her guidance through three of the most important years of our lives, we presented her with a silver vegetable dish. We were all sorry to see her leave, but when we heard that she was to become a mother soon, we could not have been happier for her. With Mrs. Taylor went our Junior year. We now faced our last and final year at Franklin High School. Now our four years of schooling and training would pay off. Our Senior Class Officers were elected as follows: President JOHN AIMONE Vice President JOHN PRINCIPESSA Secretary NANCY SIMON Treasurer FRED ANDERSON We asked Miss Shaughnessy to take over the position of class advisor and she accepted. She proved to be a great help and a really satisfying advisor. She is a wonderful person and we will always be thankful that we had her to guide us through the busiest and hardest year of all. This year we initiated the Freshmen. It was fun. and they were wonderful sports. The Fresh¬ man Acquaintance Dance was the first order of business for us. It was a great success, as the Acquaintance dance usually promises an entertain¬ ing and laughable time. Since this was going to be an expensive year, we had some money-making projects to attend to. The first was a food sale at Brunelli’s Super Market. The second was a record hop. Both were a success socially as well as financially. During this time, the various com¬ mittees were busy preparing the yearbook for press. All their hard work proved worthwhile when we got them back. They were beautiful. Next came the class play. Sally Crowley and Fred Anderson bad the leading parts and did a wonderful job. Soon the Oskey Jukebox Jamboree was upon us. A lot of hard work went into making it an Oskey to remember. All classes did their parts to make it successful. The Prom and Reception to Seniors came next. This was the event that tested our social dignity. It went over wonderfully and we congratulate the Juniors for such an enjoyable time. Then, baseball season was going strong. Many of our boys participated as they had in previous sports. The climax of our Senior year came upon us so fast that we were scarcely aware that a whole year had passed. Better still, four years. This week. I thought, was really hectic. Along with the parties and social gatherings, we had Baccalaureate, the Senior Hop, Alumni Banquet, and tonight Class Night. Thinking of it made my heart sink. I was one of the lucky ones who had a speech to make. “Oh.” I groaned, “I’ll never be able to do it!” The thought of it quickly brought me to the present. I was standing almost in front of my house already. Tomorrow, I thought, will end the happiest days of my life. We will leave our school days and teachers behind us. Now we will set out to conquer the world. What better way to start than by facing all those people tonight and speak¬ ing in front of them? If I’m scared. I ' ll have plenty of company. With this thought in mind. I turned my steps toward home.
