1930 HIGH Benjamin Franklin High School has come of age. During this short period of time our school's progress has been highlighted by many accomplishments directed toward the development of the individual. Franklin is indeed uniqueg for during the years our school has become a melting pot of all nationalities, races, and religions, with students of different creeds working together in harmony. This is the greatest achievement Franklin has made or can hope to make. Now on her twenty-first birthday, we cherish the past and anticipate her future. As a tangible record of Franklin's early years, we present the highlights of her twenty-one years of growth. 1930 on September 2, Franklin- High School welcomed its first classes under the leadership of Roy L. Butterfield, principal, and William Wol- gast, vice-principal. 1931 our Constitution was adopted, the Junto was organized, and the first student officers were elected. Honor was our theme as the National Honor Society got under Way. We dedicated our first Key to the man who had given us.the key to our school, Judge James P. B. Duffy. 1932 our first Franklin Day-Need we say more? 1933 Franklin's music students won national honors at Providence, Rhode Island. 1934 The Practical Arts Department paid tribute to the past and the future when it equipped a Guild Hall in the medieval tradition as a meeting place for the newly organized Craft Guild. The school's first aviation class was formed. Our Franklin Choir sang to the world over the National Broad- casting Station. 1935 Our science students enlisted their horticultural activities in the service of patriotism and raised more than three hundred geraniums for the Memorial Day decoration of soldiers' graves. 1936 Another first for Franklin! Frank Dickerson, a senior, won first prize, a silver cup, in a world wide shorthand contest. He continued to win distinction when he became a member of General MacArthur's staff in Japan in World War Il. 1937 our Varsity Club began to cheer our athletic teams on to victory. 1938 Franklin welcomed its new vice-principal, Willard A. Sabin. 1939 The Maharajah arrived l l ! 1940 Registration soared and life took on a quickened tempo as the larger part of the Washington High School faculty and student body came to F ranklin. 1941 The Franklin Basketball Team won the Inter-scholastic championship and the sectional title. 1942 Lufe Magazine devoted an issue to the theme-Franklin, the Democratic school. 1943-1946 our War efforts became our chief Concern. War bonds totalling more than 510,000 were sold at our bond auction. Franchot Tone charmed dollars from our pockets and fluttered feminine hearts when he ap- peared at our largest bond rally. Home Economics classes made hundreds of Well-made garments for Europe's destitute children. Our shops ran round the clock preparing men and women for work in war plants. Shop students made fifty trays and bedside tables for 4.
