Franklin Kicks-off to Patterson to open 1963 football season. FRANKLIN POSTS BEST SEASON SINCE '58 The 1963 version of the Franklin Hornet football team compiled the school's best record since 1958. For twenty- two seniors it was their final year of participation and they made the most of it chalking up six wins while losing three and battling to a scoreless deadlock in another game. While compiling an impressive won-loss record the Hornets also had the advantage for the season in scoring and in team offense as compared to their opponents. Franklin High had a whopping 2488 yards rushing to 1689 for their opponents. Franklin scored 132 points while allowing only 78 to be scored against them. Four Hornet players shared the top spot as leading scorers. David Fournier, Gary Holmes, John Gauthier, and Richard Lacombe each scored 24 points to share the team scoring title. Holmes was the leading rusher, gaining 625 yards in 108 attempts for a 5. 8 average per carry. Franklin High had a 3-2-1 record in district 5AA play. The Hornets defeated Kaplan, 40 to Og Northside, 19 to 6 and Cathedral, 13 to 6. The loss to district champion Abbeville, 25 to 0 and to Crowley 20 to 6 were the tean'1's only two district defeats. The tie came in a scoreless duel with Morgan City. The Hornets fared quite well in non-district play, capturing three victories while losing one. The wins came against Patterson, 32 to 0, St. Martinville, 19 to 0, and Cecilia, 41 to 0. The lone loss suffered in non-league play was to Class A state semi-finalist Berwick, 20 to O. Two Hornet players, senior guard James Marcotte and junior center Mike Borne, were named to the District 5AA first team, selected by the league's coaches at the end of the season. Fullback Gary Holmes, end Charles Fontz, and tackle Raymond Taylor, all seniors, were second team all-district selections. In addition to being chosen to the 5AA first team, Borne and Marcotte were also named to the Class AA All-Southwest Second team. At the conclusion of the season, members of the Hornet gridgsquad chose Fontz and Taylor as permanent co-cap- tains for the season. Taylor was also honored by his teammates as being selected king of homecoming.
