We believe that these are indeed the attributes of the teacher to whom the Hornet is dedicated. For the greater part of her life this teacher has devoted herself to the molding of young minds through the teaching profession. Her desire is, and always has been, to do the best job possible for the students she comes in contact with daily. With a deep feeling of gratification and thanks for a job well done, we dedicate this the 1964 Hornet to Miss O'Niell. L wi' i EX Franklin i Q nc., 'J Ti- n f:....T LQ: ' s N5 Ek UO.: .Rx I' 0 High School ay! ffl' . 0, Jr'-'M if J. - I ' p 1 Q' i o Alma Mater We sing out our praises To dear old Franklin High. With loyal and true love We sing it evermore. Through her hallowed portals, Though many have gone by, Her memories will still linger here As in the days before. Alma Mater, Alma Mater, Tender fair and true, We renew our pledges and vows That we have made, To Alma Mater, Alma Mater, Dear old Franklin High. Foreword As we all well know, another year has gone by in the school life of 600 Franklin High School stu- dents and with it goes the memories of a school year which will live forever in their hearts as being the most rewarding and gratifying of their careers. For 134 of these scholars there will be no returning in August, there will only be the long road into a life whose foundations have been formed by a school and its instructors for four long years. And, in the future, there will be more graduates to take their places alongside these for as each year passes many faces disappear never to return. Others respond to their calling by completing a higher education before fulfilling their destiny! This year's seniors will leave with a comforting thought that as long as a Franklin High continues to exist, there will always be others of the same character and ability to fill the vacancies created by their departure. This is what we have attempted to present to you in this yearbook - the spirit, devotion and loy- alty of these students to their school., Whether this may be demonstrated by their participation in ath- letics, club organizations, civic groups, or just plain attending school is of little significance, for we only intend to demonstrate to you the major aspects of school life as it has existed at Franklin High School during the 1963-1964 school year, Had it not been for such dedicated individuals as our principal, Mr. Dry, our assistant prncipal, Miss O'Neill, and the remainder of the faculty,we might certainly be singing a different tune - for it is they who have instilled in us an inspiration of carry on and to do our best no matter with what we are occupied, As in most schools, there have been numerous organizations within the student body, and F,H.S, is no exception. We have thus duly recognized them along with the athletics, other extracurricular organizations, and the plain everyday chores of school life. Along with the process of learning comes a feeling of satisfaction for having accomplished a de- sired goal - this goal being to instill in all of us the ideals and aims of good citizens - truth, honor, and integrity. With further regard to the '64 Hornet, we hope that you will feel as we do and forever cherish the memories of your days at dear old Franklin High School. 1 i 5 J i MR, I, C, DRY, Principal TO THE CLASS OF 1964 It is my wish that each of you has received a well-balanced academic education while attend- ing the Franklin High School. Along with this goal, I hope that you have developed a keen sense of moral, civic, social and spiritual values in your lives. In the rapidly-changing world in which you find yourselves, Ihope that you have acquired the ability to choose wisely. You should choose wisdom first and then try to put wisdom, good ideas, wholesome living, and things that are uplifting into the stream of your life. AND MISS DEPENDABLE Charles Fontz and Susan Chauvin As Freshmen we entered Franklin High frightened yet also thrilled at the thought of changing from elementary school to high school. One of our fears was getting lost in the round building. But we soon found out that it was not so hard to find our way. As Sophomores it was not half so thrilling as entering our first year. But we all looked forward to seeing our friends and finding out who would be our teachers. As Juniors we were old hands at getting around the build- ing and just could not wait to start selling magazines to raise money for our Junior-Senior Prom. 46 W K mxmw 7 N Pefso W6 Go MOST SCHOOL SPIRIT ED Gary Matherne and Paget Haydel MOST HANDSOME AND BEAUTIFUL Richard Lacombe and Lynn Barras Then came the big year and none of us could believe it. We were Seniors! ! We took the Mental Maturity Test, the Achievement Test and the Kuder Preference Test. When our rings arrived if you walked down the halls you could always tell a Senior, not only because we were showing off our rings, but also because of a certain glow of glory and also of sadness in the eyes of each. It had finally struck us that we would be leaving soon to go on to bigger and more dif- ficult tasks in our life. No matter how much we fuss and gripe about our high school days, we will always look back and wish we were there again. Our memories, experiences, and our friendships here will always be among our most cherished possessions. BEST ALL AROUND Glenn Legnon and Carolyn Hebert MR. Franklin Kicks-off to Patterson to open 1963 football season. FRANKLIN POSTS BEST SEASON SINCE '58 The 1963 version of the Franklin Hornet football team compiled the school's best record since 1958. For twenty- two seniors it was their final year of participation and they made the most of it chalking up six wins while losing three and battling to a scoreless deadlock in another game. While compiling an impressive won-loss record the Hornets also had the advantage for the season in scoring and in team offense as compared to their opponents. Franklin High had a whopping 2488 yards rushing to 1689 for their opponents. Franklin scored 132 points while allowing only 78 to be scored against them. Four Hornet players shared the top spot as leading scorers. David Fournier, Gary Holmes, John Gauthier, and Richard Lacombe each scored 24 points to share the team scoring title. Holmes was the leading rusher, gaining 625 yards in 108 attempts for a 5. 8 average per carry. Franklin High had a 3-2-1 record in district 5AA play. The Hornets defeated Kaplan, 40 to Og Northside, 19 to 6 and Cathedral, 13 to 6. The loss to district champion Abbeville, 25 to 0 and to Crowley 20 to 6 were the tean'1's only two district defeats. The tie came in a scoreless duel with Morgan City. The Hornets fared quite well in non-district play, capturing three victories while losing one. The wins came against Patterson, 32 to 0, St. Martinville, 19 to 0, and Cecilia, 41 to 0. The lone loss suffered in non-league play was to Class A state semi-finalist Berwick, 20 to O. Two Hornet players, senior guard James Marcotte and junior center Mike Borne, were named to the District 5AA first team, selected by the league's coaches at the end of the season. Fullback Gary Holmes, end Charles Fontz, and tackle Raymond Taylor, all seniors, were second team all-district selections. In addition to being chosen to the 5AA first team, Borne and Marcotte were also named to the Class AA All-Southwest Second team. At the conclusion of the season, members of the Hornet gridgsquad chose Fontz and Taylor as permanent co-cap- tains for the season. Taylor was also honored by his teammates as being selected king of homecoming. This is especially true in this case, for Peter was not only a likable boy, but a good boy, as well. There was something about Peter which was always radiant. Perhaps, it was his talent for finding enjoy- ment in everything he did, or maybe it was his carefree attitude toward life which allowed him to live in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility among his friends and fellow classmates. Peter was a hard worker and he always enjoyed the rewards of his labors. Peter was sincere, honest, and at all times doing what he thought best. These are qualities for which all of us should be desirous, and it is prob- ably for this and Peter's character that he will be so sorely missed. A .Whether we knew Peter personally or not, we must all agree that he was the type who was easy to get along with, and a person who was well liked by all who knew him. Yes, we will never again be quite the same as before his parting but we must and will continue to live on striving to obtain higher goals because of what he meant to us and because of what he stood for.
