' , . .5 - , Ror' L-ju ra , B.. .Q 1 - 3 ' Y, B.S. 6 HISTORY OF FRANKLIN SCHOOLS The flrst school house 1n the county was erected 1n Franklm IH 1801 ln what IS now the park Thls was a log schoolhouse and lnstead of glass the wlndows had greased paper The puplls sat on benches and the only place for wr1t1ng was a board stlcklng out of the wall along one slde of the room The teacher of thls school was James lvlason r The second teacher was Alexander 'VIeCalmont and the agreement be tween hlm and the parents whose chlldren eame to the school describes the terms and the subjects to be taught Each of the thirty puplls was to pay two dollars every three months and the parents were to furnlsh a school house and flre wood for cold weather In return Xlr NIcCalmout taught readlng Wfltlllg and ar1thmet1c ln 1815 'md 1850 separate bulldlngs were erected and called Academles These were more l1ke our hlgh schools In 1854 a two story brlck bulldlng was bullt Thus was called the Old Academy All of these bulldmg were pald for and run by prlvate cltlzens for there was no pubhc educatlon above the grades In 1867 the property of the Academy was EIVGH to the state and 1n 1868 the Old Unlon School was bullt to be a pubhc hlgh school The flrst class graduated 1n 1879 The flrst pI'll1Clp8l of the F H S was Nlareus Horton whose son was ln the flrst graduating class Edward Horton was the last Sll1'V1VlI1g member of th1s class Early 1n 1900 the present Semor Hlgh blllldlflg was bullt There was no Audltorlum at flrst Assemblies and studv halls were held ln the large room whlch has smce been dlvlded 1nto the Lxbrary Hall and Room 709 Commence ment Exerclses were held ln the Opera House About 1914 the pre sent AULlltOflUm and gvm was bullt and the town was very proud when the flrst graduatlng class appeared on the new stage The school eontmued to grow and m 1936 37 the Iumor Hrgh School Blllldlllg was erected From 1819 to 1954 graduatlng classes have grown from the orlgmal fue to one hundred and flftv bllllLllIlj.,S have Increased rn SIZC and number new courses of studx were added and the whole program enriched Nlanx plans for the future are msurance that the Board of Dlrectors wlll con tmue the lmprowements to proude the best t'dllLJ.tlOIl for the children of Franlclm and the dlstrlets jommg lt 7 5 1, r I 1 . .1 I Y .
