NEWELL Principal 'lin the Class of 1943: lt has been with much interest ancl enthusiasm that I have watched you clevelop and grow from the seventh gra-,le through gracluation. For some. the way has been easyg for others. the road has been harcl. For all. I trust it has meant preparation for 21 responsible life in the future. Hy a re- sponsible life, l mean that each of' you should contribute some- thing to life so that the world is a little better because you have lived in it. For this life, let each member strive with all his ability. My best wishes for your success in life go with you as you gracluate and take your place in the worlcl. My young friends of the class of '43: It has been an honor and a joy and a pleasure to journey with you along the short road which now forever lies behind you, a road truly strewn with the garlands of happiness, fellowship and friendship, and now at its end you have at- tained the prize, the cherished diploma, which we sincerely hope will prove to be an incentive to climb to higher and greater achievements in the oncoming years But what of the longer and more difficult road ahead? VVill you accept the challenge of the great fight for victory in the global war now raging. and of the greatest reconstruction period in all the world's history? The material needs of the world are indeed great, but in far greater measure is its need of a self-sacrificing service to mankind, to help lift to a high plane of faith and courage, liberty and peace the down-trodden races of humanity. Keep firmly intrenched in heart and mind this truth: we serve self and our God best by serving others. Let this be your first consideration as you journey along this roadg then as you come to its sunset you will receive the grand prize of an abiding peace and contentment of service well rendered and of work well done. From The Diary of Sally Senior I ll Diary- This is my last day of school! And now That I am leaving, this longed-for day has lost Its charm. I'll miss the daily rush to wash My face and comb my hair, and reach 1ny desk Before the bell re-echoes in the room. I'll miss the frantic beating of my heart Pounding like an erratic riveter Before each recitation. No more will the eager Anticipation of the next assembly taunt My brain. VVhat will till the place left vacant By the sound of many feet, by the flood of voices Blending in carefree talk and joyous laughter As we sauntered through the halls from class to class YVhat can replace the thrill of joy and pride From a daring ten-yard dash, a well-placed punt, Or a skillful forward pass? The wild excitement Of the long shot that wins the breathless game? I'll miss the frolic fun of student dances, The stcalthy word or glance of library dates, And just walking home from school with a load of books I'll miss the problem of finding forty-eight hours In a twenty-four day. Oh. yes, there were times VVhen the home-work piled high. and we had to miss a movie To bring that history notebook up to date, Or worry our brains to write that essay due Tomorrow, or study French and mathematics. The class rings selected by the ring committee met the approval of the class inenibers because of their striking distinctiveness. The junior play, Three Days of liracie , revealed the acting talent of the class and provided hilarious enter- tainment for its audience. To honor the seniors. the class of '44 planned the ,lunior Promenade which provided all present with a gala evening. The ofticers of the class, namely. james Barnicle. presidentg Norma Mitchell. rice-presidentg Cherry! Not only can the class boast of splendid school spirit but of their line patri- otism, Though the class had its hands full with all its various activities, it was not too busy to do its bit in aiding the war effort. During the year it sponsored a collection of old silk stockings, which added up to the sum of tive thousand. On April S, this versatile group presented in assembly a hilarious comedy' entitled Annabel Steps ln, ably coached by Miss Rankin. The play committee consisted of Mary Beach, Dorothy McKnight. and Steve Facini. Burger, Funeral Home Class of I946 The freshman class always expends some of its energy in assimilating new members who are added to its numbers from schools in other districts, in getting adjusted to more advanced subjects, and in learning the methods of a different group of teachers. Much of the social life of the freshmen consists in exchanging hits of news about newcomers and welcoming them into their number, and in com- paring notes about different courses and different teachers. This year's class went through the usual procedure, quickly became acclimated. and began to participte in school activities. They heartily supported the Defense Council with their six willing workers: Helen Marczak, Robert Seabrook, VVil1is Owens, Earl Hill, Pat Smith and Tom Shorts. They are also credited with fine work on Mr. Ut-ane's Council under the leadership of Mr. Ralph Fulton. The four young and eager representatives who ably gave time and assistance were Pat Fry. Fred Jewell. ,Xnn liiery. and Billy Dickson. To them and their home room teachers was entrusted the task of preparing the Thanksgiving programg for this assembly they presented a play-pageant en- titled Prelude to Thanksgiving. written and directed by Miss lilfreda Graham. with Mr. Stocker and members of the music department providing the musical effects. The freshman basketball team, coached by Mr. Allan Tripp, made a fine record during the year. Although they did not quite come out on top, they gave promise of able players for the future. Now that they have tested their abilities in various fields. they are ready to go conlidently forward to next year. Stage Crew The members of the stage crew constitute the unsung heroes of every pros gram, however simple or complex. It is only through their cooperation that we were able to have the many programs we enjoyed this year. lf you asked a stage crew inc-lnlber why he does it, he might be at a loss for an answer. but the real reason is that the life of these back-stagers is fraught with as much excitement and as many adventures as the life of Dick Tracy. Last fall when the rheostat went on the blink, a few hot moments followed until the resulting tire was put out. lishel- man experienced a close shave when a heavyweight from the ceiling missed his head by inchesg Dodds was less lucky, for some falling plaster struck him square on the cranium. Tumbling from a ladder behind scenes gave Harold 'Clyde a badly wrenched ankle. john Hutz came out as second best in an encounter with a piece of scenery and then had to repair it, while jim Doyle got a sky-ride when a heavy back-drop he was holding overbalanced. While up on the light-bridge adjusting lights, Ray Murphy calmly stuck his foot through the ceiling plaster. Besides such experiences as these, many emergencies arise which tax the ingenuity of the group or any member of it. So well are such situations niet that the audience is never aware of them. XYe are proud of our stage crew for their efticiency, and ability to meet every situation with equal facility. This year. after a lapse of several years. our school was given the privilege of self-government. its success not being in the hands of the faculty but in the hands of the students themselves. The council is composed of twenty-four stu- dents and six faculty members. each class being represented by four of its mem- bers and a faculty member. The three organized classes were represented by their class officers and advisers. The council was under the wise guidance of Mr. Deane, who acted as its chairman. Miss Rankin was elected by the council as its vice- chairnian. NVillard Decker as its secretary and Norma Mitchell as its assistant secretary. lt was by no means an easy undertaking to establish self'-government. Not only was it necessary for the students to have faith in the representatives. hut the representatives had to be able to judge and vote wisely. Each Thursday noon when the council met, it discussed the general conduct of the past week and voted accordingly. If the majority of members thought that conduct had been poor. the privilege of having early dismissal the following Friday afternoon was withheld. Fortunately there was a line spirit of cooperation among the students and in the council. If it had not existed, the council would not have been the success that it is. It also has collected books for the Victory Book Campaign. The Defense Council is composed of a member from each home room, who is elected by the students in his respective home room. The officers elected by the members of this organization are: president, VVendell Bal-cerg secretary, Pa- tricia Smith, and treasurer, Dick Gealy. Much of the credit for the organization and success of the Defense Coun- cil belongs to Miss McClimans. Last year the Defense Council collected and sold seventy-seven tons of waste paper and cardboard and two hundred and twenty-tive pounds of tinfoil, Of the money netted from the sale of the paper and tinfoil, one hundred dollars was given to the Red Cross and ten dollars was given to the Company I, Fund. In addition to this the members collected over a hundred books for the Victory Book Campaign, which sent the books to the soldiers. This year the Defense Council has carried on its work by a scrap drive, in which sixteen tons of scrap-iron and steel, o11e thousand, one hundred and forty- six pounds of vital copper and brass, one thousand, eight hundred pounds of rub- ber, ninety-seven pounds of lead and thirty pounds of zinc were collected. They also collected two hundred and sixty.-seven books, including NVestern novels, mys- teries, biographies, books of travel and fiction fthe service man's favorite typesll for the Victory Book Campaign. Following the action of last year's council, they have donated money to worthy causes. They have given two hundred and fifty dollars to the Red Cross W'ar Relief Fund and twenty-five dollars to the American Legion Fund to buy cigarettes for selectees leaving for the Army. If there is but an ounce of truth in these words, it can truly he said that many seeds of valor have been given their start on the gridirons and in the gym- nasiums of this vicinity. The half4backs, ends, forwards, and centers of today will be the soldiers. sailors, marines and fliers of tomorrow. These same boys will be playing for a much more important team next year. Uncle Sam's armed forces and instead of scoring touchdowns and baskets. they will be making the world a safer and happier place in which to live. To these same boys we dedicate these pages of athleticsg that in days of war, or peace-to-come, they may sit down and look back and remember their bud'- dies of high school days. We sincerely hope that these pages to follow will bring many happy and joyous memories to anyone who chances to leaf through them. NVQ: wish all those of Franklin High School who have in any way participated in any form of athletics all the luck and good fortune in the world. VVe will rest assured that if they face the problems of life with as much determination as they put into a hard tackle on the gridiron or with as much decisiveness as on the bas- ketball court, they will be sure to succeed in life. Tripp and his able assistant, lid Treadwell, the Nursery squad rode through a very successful season in comparison with former years. XVith a practically new line and a fairly seasoned hacktield, the Franklin High eleven defeated such rivals as Corry, Meadville, Titusville, and Oil City and battled to a standstill the highly rated Grove City llrovers. A win over Corry, a defeat. which was a moral victory. from Grove City, and a knockdown, dragout ibattle and win over Meadville started the Nursery out in its seemingly outstanding season. This soon turned to a disastrous set back when a few well-meaning words set heads to swelling and before we knew what had happened, Sharpsville had trimmed us, and then Xllarren and Greenville. This was too much for our boys to stand, so they retaliated with a 24-7 win over Titus- ville in a game played in a sea of mud and topped off the season with a never-to- be-forgotten triumph over the Oil City Oilers.
