Ihappened across it, opened it up and the years seemed to roll back with the book pages. Five - ten - why, seven- teen years ago! Imagine! What wouldn't I give to be back there when we first entered Franklin High School as the Freshman Class. I'll never forget that day. It was September 7, 1950, and the sun was glaring through the big windows in the gym. At last we were Freshman and weren'twe the cat's whiskers though? We were eighty-three in number and we felt like a thousand eighty-three. We were so anxious to get ac- quainted with this new world we were entering. With the election of class officers, our first hurdle was passed and when Shirley Taylor became our first president, we looked forward to a good year. Jean Routhier was Vice-President, Jane Reinelt, Secretary, and Dot Rayno, Treasurer. That year the styles were still a little on the new look side with long straight skirts and neckerchiefs. The Korean War was in its infancy, but the upperclassmen were much more c-oncern- ed with that than we were. At the time, we were more interested in something which was both dreaded and anticipated. Yes, initiation! Who could ever forget it? We were so gorgeous in our short skirts, slippers, and rope neckties, and the boys were breathtaking in their earrings and rolled up dungarees . Yes, High School was fun and regardless ofhow much we complained, we loved it. Who would have missed studying A Midsummer Night's Dream with Mrs. Tolman, amid Johnny Young's antics. Remember Mr. Ba1l's artistry in General Science? Pug was our class queen that year and despite our efforts, we came in in fourth place. We were well represented in cheerleading, student government, and both girls' and boys' sports, and, in spite of eternal Civics assignments, we struggled through to sponsor the Freshman Frolic in the spring. Amid April showers, MacArthur made his never to be forgotten speech to Congress and after that it wasn't any time 'til June and our class trip to Newfound Lake. When September rolled around again, we were Sophomores, and did it ever seem good to havea class below us thatwas just a little greener than we were. We really got into the swing of things and off to a good start. We ruled the whole bottom floor now and were really getting up in the world. Jersey skirts and weskits came into style and we elected class of- ficers to the tune of Slowpoke . Jimmy Hanley was our leader that 28 year, Shirley Taylor was Vice-President,with Janie again as Secretary and Elaine Raffaelly as Treasurer. Weren't we proud to be the ones to sponsor the Holiday Hop! There were hectic decorating sessions and when it was over, we took a breath and half our sophomore year was gone. Tucked away in a little corner of our hearts we'll always have Biology Class and Mr. Hoban. What horrible deeds we performed on defenseless and innocentcreatures, and how we juggled those long words around for a test. Remember all our lessons about the Air Force? In January, Franklin High School sponsored Career Day and whether or not we learned anything,it sure was fun. Almost immediately after, we selected Jeanne as our Queen and on we went again with the Winter Carnival, and as it was customary that the Seniors win, we were kind to them and came in in third place. In June we spent our class trip at Newfound Lake again and the next time we met as a class we were Jun- iors and getting more important in the school all the time. When school opened the United States was all riled up with the presi- dential campaign, and soon we were too, because we held a class officer campaign and wasn't it a riot? If I remember right the big issue was one of pre sidencv between Jack Fisher and David Manyan. and there wasn't a single person in the Junior Class who didn't hold his breath when the results were read. Jacky won and had for his helpers for the year--Vice-President, Shirley Taylor, Secretary, Jane Reineltg and Shirley Laughy as Treasurer. All the girls were wearing insignia belts with pocketbooks to match and pleated skirts about this time, and in some classes dog collar ankle bracelets were the fad. Class rings were ordered and when they finally arrived on March 9, we were really Juniors and Weren't we proud. How thrilled we were to learn that two members of our class were to be sent to Germany as exchange students, to say nothing of the way Jane and Dave must have felt. How we did it I'll never know, but somehow or other, while they were in Plymouth attending the United Nations Model Assembly, we cooked upa party for them with a cake and all the fixings. We danced to Ruby the hit of the day and a few otherpopular ones like Till I Waltz Again With You . Doggie In The Window was popular at the time, too, I think. Oh, yes! How could I have forgotten? Our Junior Prom and Blue Moon . It was the first thing that would really determine how success- ful we were as a class. It was hectic, deciding on a theme, getting tickets, programs, posters, decorating, and refreshments, and Weren't we ever pleased to learn that we actually made money on it? After that, 29 things just flew and the first thing we knew, we were coming back from Sunapee and our class trip. Finally Seniors! Now it was our turn to run the school, be looked up to, set the example and enjoy the countlessprivileges of upperclass- men. At last, after all three years, it was our turn to sit in the front section. But, as we trooped into the gym on that first day, underneath all the hilarity,we all had our serious thoughts. This was our last first of school assembly, the last time we'd be handed the Your School folder that we'd always sort of laughed at. Our last year and we had to make the most of it. After this year, the kids, the old gang, would never be quite the same again. After four long years of trying, Dave finally became our leader and no one couldhave done a better job. Mike Gignac won the Vice-Presi- dency after a close call for the Presidency, Jane went into her fourth year as class Secretary, and Jeanne Routhier served as Treasurer. Everything was angora trimmed that year, the Armistice was signed in Korea and Eartha Kitt and Eddie Fisher swept the country. We chose the yearbook staff, heard Ebb Tide on every juke box, rushed to Poblenz for pictures, sponsored the Paris Cafe Dance, and time just seemed to be flying so fast we couldn't keep up with it. Remember the Senior-Faculty game and the magazine sales? And, oh yes, the Anti-Gone-Girls Club . Who could forget Macbeth and Twelfth Night ? And the Sadie Hawkins Dance. And remember how we used to do the Bunny Hop around the gym? The boys never did care for that, did they? The school play was the lnner Willy and underneath I guess we were allconscious that this was our last schoolplay as mem- bers of the High School. Remember Initiation, with the theme of Dragnet? We had so much fun and work to cram into so little time. All too soon we'd hear Pomp and Circumstance and ina few minutes it would be all over--everything. Oh,iflcould only close my eyes and drift back on a rescending tide of time, back to the joys and sorrows, back to those days of school proms, ball games, loves and laughs, if only---but, no---not even the strongest wish can turn back the hands of time. So, with a sigh, I'1l close my book, but no matter what life has in store for me, underneath everything else, a tiny corner of my heart will never be closed to Franklin High and my days there--my fondest memories of all. 30 31 Tenting tonight on the old camp grounds lt was only a paper moon Be my love-- q l n.,1,,n s New -'lr f l VKK: Q y My best to you I didn't slip, I wasn't pushed I fell 1 Oh, you beautiful do1l We three kings Only make believe Auf Wiedersehen An old fashioned walk' F W O Q? u W HCCOHIPYHHI-gTS is .. 01 Y ,L -7-- v I JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS President ....... .... EA DEPS STUDENT GOVERNMENT The student government members represent the whole student body and their duty is to act on allproblems dealing with the students and the school. One of its major functions was the management of the passing of stu- dents between classes. The student government members are stationed in the halls to help the students to assemblies, and between the classes. They act like a jury for violations of the traffic rules. They handle dances for the different classes and schedule bus trips for the games. This year, under the leadership of their new advisor, Mr. O'Keefe, the student government was very busy. Besides planning dances and school activities, they had charge of the Winter Carnival. This time- consuming project was excellently handled, and went off flawlessly. With their many problems and activities, they don't have much Time on Their Hands ! 46 ALPHA HI-Y The Alpha Hi-Y under the capable direction of President Shirley Taylor enjoyed a very successful year. The advisers, Miss Dolloff and Mr. Harris, were always on hand, willing to help out at every turn. The annual Hi-Y Banquet was held in Franklin on February ll. Girls attending the Older Girls' Conference in Rochester this year were Shirley Taylor, Janet Taylor, and Norene Huntoon 47 GIRLS CHOIR The girl's choir, under the able guidance of Miss Moses, is a popular and well-known school organization. This hand picked group of girls sing at the annual school concert, and very often are asked to sing at meetings of various organizations. Each year two or three members of the choir are chosen to go to the State Music Festival. This year the lucky nominees were Ann Williams, Paula Kidder, and Anne Lyon. BETA HI-Y 5 F , . .' Music was furnished by Fred Zajac, and the exact place of the classes in the carnival was undecided until the last moment. New events added to the Carnival this year included deck tennis, shuffle board, and wrestling. L 'l 1 Apri1,1951--- fn, f The time finally came when we, as Freshmen, Q -I' M could prove our worth as the ambitious and up-and- coming class we claimed we were. Being alloted only one dance date, we put our young hearts into rl! 'Ji' planning and preparing for the Freshmen Frolic , our ' e first social event in our high school careers. Although it was just a record dance, we gave it importance by decorating the gym with hundreds of pastel colored streamers. Our center piece was a huge maypole with streamers covering the center circle. As the dance was a big success, we raised our heads a little higher, and with anticipa- tion eyed the events and dances that our class, the Class of '54, would hold in the future. December, 1951--- Our Sophomore year came along, and with it the fun of sponsoring the annual Holiday Hop . With the same spirit and enthusiasm as the year before, we pitched in to make it as wonderful and yet as different as we possibly could. Unlike previous years, we used red and white streamers to decorate the ceiling. Around the gym and fuk' in the center of the floor, we placed Christmas trees lit y' of mistletoe to the music of Bob Hall s orchestra. Yes the Class of '54 was well on its way ' .f J . - E J tered. with colored balloons. We danced beneath sprigs March 21, 1953-- None of us, l'm sure, will ever forget our Junior year and with it our Junior Prom, Blue Moon . After much hard work and planning, we were rewarded with the feelingthat our decorations surpassed those of any other class. In keeping with our theme,we draped the ceiling with streamers offive different shades of blue, and placed different colored lights in various corners of the gym to give the desired effect. Our center piece, and our pride and joy, was an angel swinging on a blue half moon. This mechanism was fixed in such a way, that the angel swung to and fro throughout the dance. Fred Zajac and his orchestra provided the music. We haven't to this day, stopped boasting of the fact that we,the Class of '54, were the first class in Franklin High ever to make money on aJunior Prom. But, then again, wouldn't you, too, be proud? December, 1953-- French berets and soft lights set the picture for our Paris Cafe . Party tables were cleverly placed along the sides of the gym with a French bar at one end where students could purchase things to eat and drink. A floor show comprised of students provided laughs, and an enjoyable time was had by all. fOui, c'est grand fun, n'est pas?j 69 'rg' ON! FOOTB LL ihe football forces experienced a disappointing season in '53. The total over -all record ofthe Golden Tornadoes was no wins and seven losses. Though they played together, always a team, our boys could never quite muster up the scoring power needed to win. The outstanding individual accomplishment of the season was a 100-yard runback of a kick-off by David Morin against Towle. VARSITY BASKETBALL The Golden Tornadoes of Franklin High suffered an off year, winning two and losing fourteen. Coach Henley's men were led in scoring by Judge Hanley, who performed the scoring feat ofthe season by scoring thirty-two points against Plymouth. Although they were out-played and out-scored most of the time, we can truly say that we were proud of the effort put forth by our team this year. Notable performances were turned in against Laconia and St. John's in home games. BASKETBALL The Junior Varsity enjoyed an excellent season, winning eleven and losing five. Nine of the wins were consecutive. In this streak, Coach C1ourley's charges hopelessly outclassed all of their opposition. The Jayvees performedin brilliant style against arch-rival Laconia. They impressed everyone with the spirit and fight they displayed. With their great teamplay, the Junior Varsity assures Franklin of splendid basketballprospects. GIRLS' BASKETBALL The 1954 Girl's Basketball Team ended the season with five wins and seven losses. The girls lost their first four games. But, on January 18, 1954, Coach Dolloff notified the girls in a nice way before the game against Newport, that it would be a fine birthday present if they would win for her. So, the team obliged. But, at the half, Franklin was losing by seventeen points. Newport's coach called out that they would win by twenty points. This made the team more determined than ever to win this game. The girls realized that New- port was seventeen points ahead but they nevertheless tied the game in the last few seconds ofplay. Finally, in overtime, the F. H.S, girls came through witha 43-41 victory. This game encouraged the team to win four out of their six remaining contests.
