Miss Hickman, Miss Campbell and Mrs. Fringer are shown in the office adjacent to the library. Franklin's library, containing more than 7000 books, is considered to be one of the most outstanding and attractive features of the school. The librarians, Miss Martha Camp- bell and Miss Carol Hickman, aided by the library secretary, Mrs. Annie Fringer, acquaint the students with the library facilities and with many interesting books found there. They also try to keep the library up-to-date by constantly expanding the book and magazine selection. The library is used by the students for reference work or free-reading before and after school and during study periods. I am what I know. MRS. HOFFMAN MRS. KERSEY AOB 40? . 86,66 O Guidance The Guidance Department is concerned with aiding the student to develop self-understanding and maturity. Mrs. Hoffman, Mr. Straub, and Mr. Sherwood, the counselors, assist the students in evaluating their interests, abilities, and achievements. Mrs. Kersey is the guid- ance secretary. The work of the department varies with each grade. Freshmen are introduced to the senior high programg sophomores are told of the standards necessary to meet their tentative goalsg juniors are helped to visualize their places in society and to prepare for that place. Finally, seniors are given help in planning for college or for careers. The work of the Guidance Department does not end with the senior's graduation. Graduates and drop-outs are studied in a follow-up program which enables the department to measure the effectiveness of Franklin's total educational program. By participating in a speech class, a student learns what to say and how to say it most effectively. Speech classes meet three times a week under the supervision of Mrs. Farley. This year, a Speech II course was initiated for students interested in debate. X MRS. FARLEY Drama class supports President's physical fitness program . . . Entire Speech II class is hard at work! D ra m a To help the student develop poise and emotional control is the purpose of the drama class. The student also learns to judge the emotional reactions of others. Franklin played' host to the State Fall Drama Clinic in October and to the Baltimore County Drama Festival in April. Six hundred and thirty students, and fifty teachers, representing thirty- seven schools attended the state clinic. Franklin's language teachers strive to teach students not only a written knowledge of a foreign language but to focus the attention on the spoken language and the culture of the foreign country. Recently in Baltimore County, a new course was introduced. In this course, students of the third and fourth years are taught the literary aspects of the particular language which they are studying. They read short stories, novels, and plays written in the various languages. An outstanding feature of our school is the language laboratory, which enables students to increase their fluency, to correct errors, and to pattern their speech after that of native speakers. Today, mathematics, the science of numbers and their relation to man, is a diversified field of work. This diversity is well exhibited by the range of courses offered to the students at Franklin. A new course, ninth grade gen- eral mathematics, has been added for those ninth grade students who are not taking Algebra I and II. Courses that have been added in recent years include Algebra III and IV, Honors Geometry, Trig- onometry, Analytic Geometry, and Calculus. These courses are taught in addition to Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Re- view of Academic Mathematics. Ad- vanced courses have been placed in high schools and may provide advanced placement in college for some students. Review of General Mathematics is offered to students who are tak- ing the general course. Four new teachers added to the Mathematics Department are Mrs. Macquire and Mr. Nogle who teach ninth graders, and Mr. Sterling and Mr. Kreunen who teach students from all grades. . . . These diversified courses include biology, chemistry, physics, advanced science, general physical science, and ninth grade science. Biology is the study of living organisms. The aim of this course is to make the student more aware of himself and his environment. The many laboratory activities permit the student to learn from first-hand experience. A new honors program in biology was offered this year at Franklin. Chemistry teaches the student to appreciate the powers of modern chemistry in helping man control his environment. A new laboratory course, including lab books and new equipment with safety devices, was tried this year with great success. Physics is the mathematical approach to the basic concepts of the natural laws of the universe. Ade- quate laboratory equipment allows the student to actively participate in the discovery of the main principles of physics. Advanced Science, a course in its second year at Franklin, gives the interested 'and capable student an excellent opportunity to do further scientific work. The major part of the course is devoted to experimental research on the individual level. How- ever, a course in basic human physiology is also part of the program. General Physical Science is a course which is en- tirely laboratory oriented. General Physical Science students study units on Pushes, Pulls, and Moving Things, Rocks and Soils, Breakthroughs into Space, Hazards in Today's Environment, and Chemistry of Plastics. Our Man to Malaysia-john Current .5 ' - .. i me f . , . .La at . . 1 we : f .ilyrff I had the great honor to meet the Royal Family . . . As I walked through the streets of Singapore during my first day in Malaysia, I felt as if I was in a mysterious land, twelve thousand miles from Reisterstown. The hawkers trying to sell their wares, the road side restaurants filled with the odor of Oriental food, and the tri-shaw drivers begging me to take a ride, all confirmed my feelings. But after I met my new family and the people of my new home town , Sunge Patoni, I realized that this land and these people were not so different after all. They experienced traffic jams, race riots, and the Cold War, as we do in America. In fact, our problems, goals, and desires had a great deal in common. It took me but a few days to feel like a member of my Chinese family. We were constantly on the go so that I might see as much of Malaysia as possible in my ten short weeks. I saw more of Malaysia and its people on the A.F.S. Summer Program than most Malaysians see in a lifetime. I met the Royal Family and the top government officials as well as the shop keepers, lepers, and aborigines. I did not survey these people, as a tourist might, in- stead, I lived as one of them and grew to understand their actions and feelings. The knowledge and understanding I was accumulating was the most rewarding part of my trip. I'only wish more students could share my experience. I am grateful to the A.F.S. Program and to Franklin for my trip. I do wish to return to Malaysia as a Peace Corps volunteer. Slamat Tingall! II6 TH E AM E R I CAN Our Man to theNetherlands-Ken Hull Ken Hull and family The American Field Service International Scholarship Pro- gram is probably the most beneficial program of its kind in existence. It offers not only an opportunity to spend a year studying in a foreign educational system, but also a first-hand chance to see the people of a strange land really live-not through the eyes of a tourist, but as one of the' people. This not only leads to greater human understanding but gives one a broader insight from a different point of view from that of his native land. I have received the opportunity to spend my senior year as a student in the Netherlands. I'm sure all of you know that all Dutchmen don't wear wooden shoes and dress in national or provincial costumes-but you would be amazed at how many Dutchmen, and other Europeans as well, believe that all Americans have either a horse or a Cadillac, a swimming pool, and millions of dollars! It is through the carrying out of the A.F.S. motto that such beliefs are recognized as fantasy and that people are shown that three-thousand miles of ocean separating two nations do not bring about a change in the nature of people. Like most anything in life, A.F.S. is a program from which you draw results if you work for them. The rewards to be gained from the A.F.S. program are infinite and I shall never forget my year spent in the Netherlands. Hartelijk Groeten! Ken Hull, Class of '65 A.F.S.'er to Netherlands 1964-65 . . O Ye Peopl FIELD SERVICE Cur Gal from Argentina-josephina Poluica ,fb The first month was a little confusing . . . When I came here to the U.S., I had several purposes in mind: I wanted to learn about the country, meet the people, especially its young people, understand their ways of living, and at the same time deepen the understanding be- tween Argentina and the U.S. Now, looking back, I think I am accomplishing things. Ive really learned a lot about America. I've even gotten that beautiful Spanish-Baltimorian accent in my English. I think that I shall never forget my troubles in doing my U.S. History homework and also my confusion during the first month when I had to rush from one class to another. The Great American rush! When at last I get used to it it'll be time to go home, back again to the relaxed life of siestas in Argentina.
