4 THEN AlN NUW Franklms hlstory began wlth the date January 10 1820 On thls date trustees were appointed to obtaln land and appomt teachers for the Franklm Academy on Cockeysmlll Road However until 1826 the date whlch the construction on the academy was completed and lt was opened to occupancy students of the Academy were housed ln a bulldmg on ground rented from one of Rexsterstowns patrons Durmg this tlme students came from the surroundmg countles as well as Baltlmore and majored m the tlasslcal turrxculum tlanguages grammar geography hlstory mythologyl mathematncal fsubjects related to math or the rudlmentary fgeneral knowledge of all subjectsl Tuxtlon for a year s studles was paid accordmg to the depart ment one majored ID 3525 3516 and 312 respectrvely for the aforementloned Lxttle tlme was glven to the students and teachers for a vacatlon The days were long stretchmg from elght ln the mormng untll noon then from two to flve rn the afternoon ln the vernal to autumnal equlnox and then mne untxl twelve and from one to three thlrty durmg the autumnal to vernal equinox Throughout the year the students were under one mstructor Mr Francls Hunter In the vear 1875 a new buxldmg was added to Frankhn s domam It was the Rexsterstown Hlgh School whose name was later changed to Franklm Jr Hrgh School FIVE students graduated three years later Many years later ln 1930 a thlrd bulldmg was dedlcated to meet the growmg needs ln the Relsterstown vlcmlty Thls was the Franklm High School whlch stlll stands as the hmgh school today ln the past ten years Franlclln has expanded both 1n area and populatlon There were 615 students 26 teachers and only 7 acres of land for the school year 1947 1948 Now ten years later IH 19571958 there are 1127 students 54 teachers and about 16 acres of ground 1821 1824 1868 1875 1878 1897 1905 1914 1920 1930 1944 16 puplls enrolled m Academy 38 students enrolled 90 students enrolled New bulldmg to accommodate 300 puplls ready for occupancy Flrst graduatmg class consrstlng of flve puplls Franklm Academy became offlclally Franklln Hngh School Hugh school department took possession of new bulldmg New addxtlon of Franklm ready for occupancy Total number of graduates smce 1878 IS 586 Number of graduates smce 1878 total 996 Semor H1 h Sc bulldmg dedicated 2235 graduates smce 1878 4 hool . lv. , if 9 - 7 1'- , F-Q 4 '- 11A'v QA ,, I4 -'61 -- , ., tll'Bi'AXi 5 , V .
