He maintains a strong insistance that his students LEARN and not just memorize facts. Franklin, a landmark of this war, remains to keep those memories alive. We hope with this in mind that the 1980- 1981 Cornerstone will keep those memories alive that were special to you in your year at Franklin High. But seriously we were all starting a busy year filled with elections Homecoming, class rings and senior portraits. During the past fifteen years, Mrs. Grimes ru ' has noticed that the respect that students have for both their teachers and their fellow students has declined. When she first came to Franklin, there were nineteen faculty membersg now there are more than sixty. The vocational field has greatly expanded, and there are a lot more opportunities for today's young people. But she has also noted the air of apathy that is evident in all aspects of our society. William Uncle Willie Nelson is a favorite of his students as he leads them through the cow pasture oflife. According to Mr. Nelson, Franklin 'If' l Ay, High has changed very little in the past fifteen ' years. He feels that the kids are the same kind that have been growing up in Franklin for years. This record didn't really show their true strenglth though. Facing a tough schedule, they played both the number one ranked teams in AA CBrentwoodJ and AAA fGallatinl, the powerful teams of Hendersonville and Mt.juliet, and lost two tough games in overtime. The highlight of the season was the 49-6 Homecoming victory over Lawrence- burg. The Rebel's offense led by Wayne Armstrong, who had 875 yds. passing, was a strong one. Tailback, Stanley Ladd, was spectacular as one of the top runners in the NIL with 1385 yds. Fullback, Phil Ericson, had a good year not only as a blocker, but also as a runner with 553 yds. A lot of credit goes to the offensive line. The center of the line was led by Greg Wendzicki and Bubba Purvis, the side with Danny Leverette and Brent Thompson, and on the right, Kevin Barnes. The defense was also strong, led by Reggie Pope, Randy Shaw, and Tony Murdic. Coach Clark with assistants, Laxson, Cartwright, Carothers, and Laverty has built a strong team, through a tough weight program since the end of last season. After seeing the action of a good season this year, the future for the sophomores and juniors looks even brighter. Congratulations on a fine year! The band practiced a little bit harder and a lit- tle longer. but all of the extra practice paid off in the end. The band's list of awards and titles include: lst in the Vanderbilt Openg lst Class A, Challenge Cup, Best in State Band in the Tennessee Valley lnvitationalg and lst and Challenge Cup in the Columbia Marching Band Invitational. The biggest goal that had been set and that had been at the band's fingertips for some years was finally reached. At the close of the marching season, in October, at the Contest of Champions, Franklin band was awarded the Governors Cup and was the Tennessee State Mar- ching Band Champions! Many thought that the Governors Cup was the top ofthe mountain. but on December 51, at the Great Bands ofthe Orange Bowl Contest, Fl'lS's great band was crowned National Marching Band Champions! Y .Hg n f, , 1 v : ' V :TA .,.3. .W A 3 I H l W5 .I V r, fm if W. . ,jr f5 6, V M' L f 1, R-r..-, Rf5fNrm Q ,,- 'iw-I The band started gathering in the Franklin High cafeteria at 5 30 on December 27 After loading instruments luggage and students it was off to the Orange Bowl' The next day following a practice session at St Cloud High School in Kissimee Florida the band competed in the Great Bands of the Orange Bowl competition against eight other bands When it was announced that Franklin High had won first place the stadium went wild' The days following the competrtion were filled with such excitrng activities as a boat tour and a trip to the beach On New Year s Eve the band had the honor of marching in the Orange Bowl Parade with a banner indicating that they had won the Great Bands of Orange Bowl Marching Competition After the parade the band spent New Year s Eve traveling from Miami to Orlando where they visited Disney World After a long and tiring journey home the band was greeted with a police escort and a reception in their honor. Among the people there to greet them were students parents and many public officials including the Mayor and a representative from the governors office. MOONLIGHTER9 Many of our students here at Franklin High School have part-time jobs. These students are hard-working and industrious. The jobs are there for the taking if you will just search them out as these students have. These students seem to enjoy their work while making the big bucks. Y ??Nbm1'N,! rx Mrs. Wendell has always enjoyed working with people and she says one of her favorite groups is tourists. During college summers she sold tickets for the Grand Ole Opry and relayed information about Nashville as a hostess. Also, Mrs. Wendell worked the yearly country music celebration, Fan Fair, which is held the first week of une. Besides meeting numerous fans from all over the globe, she has also met several of the big name entertainers, including her favorite, Dolly Parton. My college education has not gone to waste during this time - I have assisted the blind and interpreted for the deaf. They too enjoy the celebration even with impairments says Mrs. Wendell. Ior more thin 70 years now Mr Iugene Wade has worked part time for Meharry Medical College and Hubbard Hospital in Nashville as a PBX Operator He has worked exclusively the night shift 11 p m a m The job includes answering incoming calls paging doctors contac on patients to callers Mr Wade recalls One night while the traffic was slow I went to sleep I woke up to the sound of a beep and the caller ask ed about some patient s condition I inadvertently went back to sleep About two minutes later I realized that I had not given the caller an answer I forgot the name and went back in on the call saying I am hav ing difficulty spelling that last name I was quickly told by the caller that the name was ones dummy O IN E S lNeedless to say Iwas very em barrassed However it has been a rewarding experience over the years iii Mrs. Reese has been playing tennis seriously for the past 1 years. She usually tries to play 3 or 4 times a week. Last summer she won the singles and doubles tournament at West Meade. When the ratings came out last fall she was happy to find that she had been ranked number 1 in the Women's Open Division in Nashville. Their team was the first co-ed power volleyball team organized under the Franklin Recreational Depart- ment, To play' on this type of team a person must be 21 years of age. The team must have at least 5 women on the court at all times, If the ball is hit more than once on one side of the court. a woman must hit it. Congratulations to these citywide champions! While here, he gave a soulvstirring speech on our future, our past, and our ever-changing present. A student panel was given the opportunity to ask questions. Senator Sasser enlightened us all with his invigorating views on democracy. While here, Senator Sasser also presented an American flag that had flown over the capitol in Washington to the school in honor ofthe Franklin High Band.
