Jack Bell arrived late as usual. It was a bitter cold day as we hud- dled in the Bowl entrance not knowing where to go - later on we learned about Liggetts. There was no ,hospitality commit- tee ar that time and many of us got lost. Some of them are lost yet so if any of you have any extra time and want to look around - Because we were too young to know any better, we let the school plan out schedules for us, which explains how we ended up in Miss Harding's class listening to numerous Johnny and Mary stories. But everything has an end and we were soon promoted to eighth grade, where we suffered through Miss Porter's 40-minute lectures and our boring English classes. It was also in eighth grade that we took an all-day test to determine our intelligence. I still can't understand why they wouldn't tell us how we came out. And then came ninth, the greatest year of our career. For it was in ninth grade, on February 22, Washington's birthday, that the never-to-be-forgotten Patriotic program was presented from the stage of Franklin. Warren Hootman played the part of a young soldier and Colonel Montgomery was por- trayed by Allen Thurman. Other members of the class also took part in the program. It was a great play, but soon forgotten, luckily enough. Those three years of Junior high were long and hard, and many of us were all ready to call it quits. However a few of the stronger members of our class survived and were in- ducted into Excellentia. They were: Virginia Bolenbaugh, Betsy Blaise, Kathryn Loomis, Diane Marshall, Katherine Safely, Mary Shaffer, Martha Lou Smith, Marilyn Wil- liams, Joanne Van Cleve, and David Ring. When we ascended to tenth grade, we found that those rumors really were true - Franklin pupils are allowed to take part in the governing of their school. Those mem- bers of our class serving on the various govern- ing committees are: Carnegie Art - Frank Jun, Mary Poole, Budget - Katharine Safely, Joan Kanak, Business - Dorothy Demory, Virgin-ia Bolenbaugh, Honor As- sembly - George Lowe, Doris Kahlerg Lyceum - Martha Lou Smith, Joanne Van Cleve: Martha Washington - Phyllis Kobe, Peggy Plockg and Public Relations - Kather- ine Loomis. Tenth grade also brought to us our first class assembly. Unfortunately it wasn't to be our last. David Ring, our 10B class president introduced .the other officers, who were: Vice-President, Diane Marshall, Secretary, FORTY Katharine Safely, and Treasurer, George Lowe. But that wasn't the end of things, for the time came for us to participate in the all school sing. Because of inexperience, instead of taking first place, we tied for fifth! Our directors Eldo Mentzer and Betsy Blaise should not be blamed for this misfortune. We were now pretty much accustomed to senior high, but there were a few things that bothered us - Mr. Deeds and his various pets, and the odors in the halls after certain chemistry experimen ts. When we came back in September as 1OA's, we sponsored our first social hour. How was it? I don't know. l rlidn't go, either. We had our share of Post work, too, with each home- room editing at least two editions - staying up 'till all hours of the night to find jokes that might pass the censors. But all this effort was not appreciated. They were all pronounced as lousy anyway. After much coaxing, pleading, begging, and even bribing, we finally gathered up enough talent to have a 10A class assem- bly. We had a sextette composed of Betsy Blaise, Joanne Van Cleve, Kathryn Barn- grover, Geraldine Kohl, Catherine Bachman, and Martha Lou Smith. They sang Wish- ing, and we still wonder just what they were wishing for. A round table discussion was held after the play. Our class officers were: President, Wallace Pinckneyg Vice- President, Virginia Bolenbaugh, Secretary, Kathryn Loomis, and Treasurer, Frank Jun. Along with 11B came another school sing. This time our directors were David Ring and Joanne Van Cleve. We fared better with the judges this time and rose to fourth place. Well, that's better than sixth. Stanley Cohen was the only one in our class who showed any real musical ability. Stanley placed first in the City Music Contest and took second at the Pre-State Music Festival. lt was Stanley who took the part of the clerk in Trial by Jury after the first clerk was overcome by mumps. . During our career of eleventh grade, Miss Horner organized the hospitality committee, whose duty it is to see that all the new little Franklinites are taken care of. From our class Betsy Blaise, Joan Kanak, Martha Lou Smith, and Charles Vondracek served on this committee. Our class ofiicers at this time were: President, Otto Wiedersbergg Vice- President, Mary Ludlow, Secretary, Jack Bell, and Treasurer, Martha Lou Smith. lt was around this time when the school had the innoculations. lt has been rumored that Glen Kemper's heart beat just too fast and could not stand the shock! They asked Yogi to predict the futures of the outstanding persons of the 4-3 Class exactly ten years to the day. Taking into consideration the fact that it was Jan- uary the 21st, 1943, and it was a given date pen years from that day that he was to predict or. I-Ie first cubed 21, divided by 12, knocked off the last two digits, multiplied by 3.14, removed the radical sign, subtracted 365-20 and obtained the correct date, January 22, 1953- After pondering deeply over each individual person he biographically wrote their pro- phecies and congenially handed the list to me, fearing to face the persons waiting anxiously for their fortunes. The first on the list was Arlene Blaine. ARLENE BLATNE has finally accomplished her life-long ambition to work in a law oflice, and has just completed her latest book, dedicated to her boss, How to 'Ring' the Bells. And look who is serving beef-burgers, Cyou won't come back for more without beef1n'D. It's DOROTHY DEMORY, who learned the art of cooking at the Franklin Cafe. A. .MARY CONN, PATRICIA DAVIS Four?-sEvEN HiJf01'jf gf the fame Clara qf 1943 On a fall day of the year 1937, we entered the first lap of our six year journey through dear old Franklin High. We were just little 7B's then except John McKay, who said he never was little. The hospitality committee was simply unheard of then. Several of us came strolling into classes after the bell had rung Cwe didn't know just what the bell meantD simply because we couldn't und Room 220. We asked someone where Room 220 was, but they just said, Somewhere on second floor. Then we shoved on into eighth grade and Miss Porter for voice. Miss Gabbert err-r-r Mrs. Loudermilk had us learn The Gettysburg Aridrerr also. And they - they pushed us on into ninth grade. Some of our class showed superior scholastic ability , and were inducted into Excellcntia. They were: Janice Bailey, Betty Mae Becker, Bob Chadima, Mary Conn, Louise Fernow, Jeanne Ferguson, Ruth Jeane Ferguson, Bob Fontana, Tucie lines, Verne Long, Marilynne Milner, Shirl Nichols, Seymour Oshman, Elaine Smulekoff, Barbara Rappoport, and Jack Wolf. And then came tenth grade. Oazbf three years more!!! We came panting in for fourth place in the annual school sing led by Jean McGinnis and Jeanne Ferguson. As we started on the last lap of the race, that boy from Roosevelt, Howard Cole, who is so-o-o fast - on the track, came to join our class. We now discovered that Franklin is a small democracy and the following pupils were chosen in a democratic way Cbeing appointed by the teacl1ersD: Carnegie Art - John Kelso, Social, Janice Bailey, Budget, Elaine Smulekoff, Business, Constance Krapf, Martha Washington, John McKay, Honor, Diane Waples, Lyceum, Bob Chadima, Public Relations, Jeanne Ferguson. Before we could catch our breath, we had an election of officers and John McKay Cbeing the largest one in our classD pulled ahead for president, Jeanne Ferguson, Vice-president,Janice Bailey, Secretary, and Seymour Osl1man, Treasurer. We then caught up on our breath and our rest in English class. November, being the month of festivity, our 10B class couldn't afford turkey so we dished up ham in form of a class assembly. Members in our class in the play were Elaine Smulekoff, Betty Mae Becker, and Ruth Jeane Ferguson. ln IOA, our assembly consisted of the plays Sire De Maletroit's Door and A Pair of Lunaticsf' Constance Krapf gave a piano solo, Paul Tiffany a baritone solo, a song by Miss James' homeroom, and we found our class comedian in Jack Wolf, who gave a reading. Then an Fon'rY-zzlcnr earthquake hit Franklin in form of our social hour. Our class being a brave one took a deep breath and came tearing into 11th grade right into the arms of Bowne, Byerly, and Byers. Dark horse Morrison took over as president, Bob Davis, Secretary, and Fred Bates was left holding the bag as treasurer, and Bill Olson, vice-president. Those in our class who were inclined to be dramatic and because of meritorious work were taken into Thespian were: Elaine Smulekoff, Joe Crow- ley, Lois Jeanne Long, Jeanne Ferguson, Carlyn Nelson, Betty Mae Becker, and Ruth Jeane Ferguson. The members of our class elected to committees were: Budget, Seymour Oshman, Business, John Manville, Carnegie Art, Dale Ferguson, Honor, Paul Tiffany, Lyceum, John Monroe, Martha Washington Room, Patricia Davis, Public Relations, Tucie Imes. Our class assembly program was made up of the play The Devil Comes to Alcaraz, and some classic and modern music. Janice Bailey and Ina Belle Long pre- sented classical pieces, while Bob Chadima, Sammy Leacox, and Jack Wolf furnished us with Boogie-Woogie. Due to shortage of coal, the more daring of our maidens started wearing slacks but .soon found out there wasn't any shortage of dis- approval, so they meekly went back to short skirts. Then time came for election to Boys' State. The fourth floor corridor looked like advertisements for a circus. Those who by some hook or crook were elected were Joseph - Oh I forgot this year democracy was shown in a big way for the women received theirrights and voted. The heroes they elected were: Howard Cole, Dick Morrison, Don Vesley, John Liddle, Bob Chadima, and Bob Fontana, who proved worthy of Franklin and was elected as Governor of Boys' State. One losing candidate seems to feel that Bob cast a spell over the voters - we've often wondered what those motions he used in speaking were for. That year our class was in fine shape and we breezed. into first place, by a fraction of a point, in the annual school sing. Our song directors were Janice Bailey and Carol Kopel. At last! At least for most of us, we plunged into the final lap of our school career. Our new arrival from Fort Dodge, that lush creature Qcareful boysj Terry Meeks, was welcomed. The 12B class officers elected were: President, Bob Chadima, Vice-president, John Monroe, Secretary, John Neff, Treasurer, Jeanne Ferguson.
