All five re- turning seniors brought a variety of strengths to their play. However, a District title was not in the cards. Throughout the season, the girls seemed to have difficulty playing, giving many of their opponents the upper hand. Also, tough competition from teams such as Sanborn-Lamberton and Springfield com- bined to add difficulty to their play. The var- sity ended their season with around a 500 record, losing to Springfield in the second round of District play. 26 Ken Kopischke sets the ball in anticipation of a spike Returning seniors, (on top) Jodi Ness Center Row Karla Wenner. A general lack of numbers combined with several injuries caused many forfeits which resulted in a 4-7-1 dual record. For the first time in many years, Cedar Mountain failed to win any team tournament championships. In spite of these difficulties, the wrestlers involved worked very hard and attained many individual goals. It was a pleasure to work with these dedicated young men, and I wish them the best of luck in future endeavors. Mr. Krai B squad — Tammy Odegaard. Stacey Gegner. Wmter 59 CREATIVE WRITING In an effort to credit those students involved more in the fine arts that in athletics, the '86 annual staff sponsored a creative writing and art contest, the results of which are published on the following pages. All students were invited to submit materials, and prizes were awarded to first through third places. Congratulations to all contest entrants for your talent and enthusiasm. 1st place — THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM: A FABLE by DEN- ISE HEIDERSCHEIDT During the big energy crunch in the winter of 2085, a French astronomer. Matteo Bartoli, an English chemist, Edwina Crom- well, and a German physicist, Francis Heiderscheidt, decided to work together to form a new energy source at Chicago Universi- ty- They worked on the possibility of making a new star like the existing ones and harnessing the energy from it. They built a massive laser weighing over thirteen thousand tons with the ability to produce radiation over fifteen billion times. They worked very hard, but nothing seemed to be successful. There just doesn't seem to be enough power,” exclaimed Matteo. What do you suggest we do?” asked Francis. 'I suggest we ad another laser to boost the power up,” replied 3rd place — ODE TO MY BANKER by BOB OLSON Great Master, I know not what to say. I borrowed money I cannot repay. If I don't pay you by today. It won't matter anyway. I really don't want you to foreclose. But I don't have money, as everyone knows. If I could pay, you know I would; Please reconsider; I wish you could. Thank you. Great Master, I know you will. P.S. Can I borrow some money to pay an old bill? Matteo. Do you know how uncontrollable that energy would be if we get it to work, exclaimed Francis. We can find a way to control the energy, replied Matteo. And what if we can't? asked Edwina. We'll just have to take that risk, shouted Matteo. No matter how much Edwina disagreed, they went ahead and added another laser. They kept increasing the power until an illuminous blast of light streamed from the laser, releasing itself into the black sky above. The star kept growing as if it were drawing energy from its surroundings. Once it hit the ozone layer, it started exploding little by little until it drew enough energy to explode entirely, causing the worst cosmic nuclear bomb ever in the LATE earth's history. 60 Winter SPRING by TOM ROTHMEIER The snow starts to melt. All the birds come back, and the grass turns green. The rains fall again; The birds are singing in the trees. Kids are playing in the sun. The days are getting warmer; The lakes are thawing; Grass is starting to grow. Fishermen start fishing. The fields start to dry; Farmers get their tractors out. The fields are planted; The crops begin to grow. WHO AM I? by MIKE MCCARTHY Am I really me? Sometimes, I stare at the mirror And try to figure out who I really am. It's like putting together a puzzle; Kind of like a guessing game. In the end, that's what you end up doing. Don't you? You guess and figure that you are you And no one else really matters but you And who you are. It seems like it’s all a dream. Hopefully, you figure it out. 2nd place — RAINDROPS ON MY HEART by MICHELLE THORNTON The day is dark and dreary. The clouds go rolling by. I hear the sounds of thunder, the skies begin to cry. The droplets hit the pavement singly — one by one. I'll bet that each one wonders, To die, what have I done? My heart understands their hurt. My soul feels the pain THEY do. For each little tiny droplet represents little hurts made by you. The pavement is no longer the pavement. The droplets no longer the rain. Instead, the pavement's my heart, the droplets are you and the pain. Outside, it's cold and windy, The air is wet and cold. The old oak tree leans more, it should, it's getting old. Similarity — so confusing. Please tell me. how can it be? That our relationship is aging yet memories stay with me. The storm is rolling on now. The winds are beginning to die. I slowly raise my eyes above and whisper a quiet good-bye. And to your picture I turn — The storm has now left town. I look into your hazel eyes — and lie your picture down. I 0 N S F 0 R E I S G T N U D E E X N c T H S A N G E FSE FINDS CHANG IN MN You've come a long way baby is usually a slogan for cigarette commercials, but it also describes Cedar Mountain's foreign exchange students. Sabine Meier and Niels Bergstroem. Sabine came from Germany and Niels came from Denmark. Among the many changes noticed by the two visitors, school was one of the biggest. Both students found school in America much less difficult than in their native countries. One of the reasons for this is because there is less homework. In Europe, it is not unusual to spend two hours a night doing homework. Other differences noticed in school routines involved the length and number of hours in each day. This quite often will vary depending on what day it is. Another aspect of American schools enjoyed by both students is the variety of extra-curricular activities available. Participation in many of the sports, includ- ing basketball, track, and golf, along with belonging to some of the other clubs active at Cedar Mountain helped make their stay more enjoyable. • Organizations OO mnmi COMPUTER CLUB Front Bob Olson. Four freshmen made up the soils team, placing third in districts and advancing to state competition. Of these four, Larry Goelz achieved a rank of 7th, individually. The livestock judging team placed 8th in districts, with Ron Seifert gaining 1st place for individual judging. Dairy team member Bruce Rothmeier also placed 1st for individual judging at districts with the team taking 5th. The ag. mechanics team also placed 5th in districts. Placing 4th in district competition was the meats judg- ing team. Finally, Wade Gronau was the first place individual on the farm management team which took 3rd in districts. Other activities included an $8,500 fruit sale in the fall, the national convention in Kansas City, and the $1,800 given to Camp Courage. Larry Goelz and Dennis Hoff- beck distinguished themselves by making it to state in the creed contest and earning the state farmer degree, respectively. Students are as- signed to a specific teacher for a class period. Depending upon the class, the student may be expected to do anything from bulletin board to overseeing a game in phy. ed. As usual, the demand for students outweighed the number of partici- pants, but interest this year was still high. On Thursday, February 20, Cedar Mountain placed first in a competition held at Redwood Falls County Courthouse. At the Mankato Courthouse on March 5, the CM mock trial team defeated Marshall, their first round opponents, but lost to last year's third place national team, Waseca, by four points. This year's case concerned a charge of assault and aggravated robbery against the defendant. Mel Kramer. The same case was tried repeatedly until Nationals; however, the team was only informed one week ahead of the scheduled competition which side they would portray in the upcoming case, prosecution or defense. Despite the youth of the team (only one senior participated), they did well. With the majority of the group returning next year, mock trial teams will get some tough competition from the CM group. The Cedar Mountain dance line is well- known for its showy half-time routines. Many hours of practice and planning occur before this select group performs. Generally, their routines show a polish that is nearly professional. This year saw the end of advisor Katie Seifert's work with this group. HIGH CHOIR This year was a good one for the vocal groups. Interest was high as 81 students were in senior high chorus. With an increase of men in the chorus, we were able to do songs from many different periods. The chorus sang at four concerts this year as well as being taped for Christmas radio shows. Since many of the members will be returning next year, the Jazz Band shows a lot of promise for the '86- 87 year. 84 Orgamzations SWEET SIXTEENS The Sweet Sixteens kept up their high standards of performance this year. By far, the highlight of the year came about at the District Contest when they achieved a star rating. This honor enabled them to continue on and compete in the Region State contest at Marshall.
