This year FHS had a very active band. When the year started it looked as if our band might be in a little trouble, but then Mr. Bruce Femling came. He got everybody back on the job. The public was certainly impressed with our first concert. Not only because of the music but because of the mood the decorations brought about. Early in the spring the band traveled to Dilworth to put on a concert there. The trip was some 240 miles, but the music still came out in the Franklin style and quality. At the district band con- test the band received three star-rating on the three songs they played. There were also eight stars for solos and ensembles received star-ratings. All in all the Franklin band has accomplished a great deal this year. Flute Solo: Martha Rodvik Officers: Curt Sather-Pres. , Geri Eisenbarth-Sec., Dave Munsell-V. Pres. It was a long, hard road, but with a lot of work and a few of Mr. Femling's tricks like holding a chair in front of us while we sang and his directing ability, we made it. After a good Christmas concert, the choir started to prepare for the Tomahawk Conference Festival. We received superior ratings on Feelin and Sweet Gingerbread Man . But our best performance was the evening concert at Fairfax as we proved to be the best chorus there. In the words of the Morgan director, Franklin stole the show. The year also included a long trip to Dilworth, a standing ovation at the best spring concert in a long time, and the final appearance of the year at the graduation of our departing seniors, who we will surely miss. 24 Soprano Solo: Teri Crain IN ' SL )} - -Or v (y' « V t Row One: Roberta Licske, Val Koupal, Mary Jo Ruff, Julie Hjulberg, Marth Rodvik, and Mr. Femling. Once Debbie Pistad gets the ball and is on the move, the Wabasso Rabbits knew enough to stay out of the way. This year the GAA had a rather ambitious group of girls. They formed a volleyball team, but had a little difficulty in winning any of their games. However, they did win a few of them. Their basketball team was not quite as lucky. They didn't win one game, but the girls all had fun playing games with other towns. The highlight of the year was the field trip to Minneapolis to see the Ice Follies. In the morning the girls all went shopping at Southdale. All the girls spent a lot of time and money there. It was a year well spent. WAS SHORT, SATISFACTION WAS GREAT . . Although not very good at it, the council tried Wayne Olson, counselor for the day, had all the right hard to practice as much as possible the rules of Parliamentary Procedure, which in advice to his many students with problems, many cases caused much confusion and drawn out meetings. The council took on many tasks throughout the year which gave them the opportunity to exercise and practice their government powers and to learn the correct ways and right use of the chain of commands. One of their first and most successful projects was the Homecoming activities. For the first time in many years, floats were made. The coun- cil spent hours of hard work planning the parade route, pepfest and coronation. All of this was followed up with a big dance, music provided by the Antics . As the year progressed, with Basketball season now at hand, the council anxiously took over their money making concession stand. This was their main means of income. Soon the snow fell and so did Snow Week. This project, an annual one, collapsed - due to uncooperative weather. But all the same, a big coronation was held. The student body voted and elected Denny Hanlon as Snow King and Cyndy Poss as Snow Queen. A record dance was held as the climax of the week. Hobo Day was the next big event sponsored by the Student Council. All students and teachers competed for first prize as the best dressed Hobo. Jeff Buboltz won the prize. (a pair of old shoes) Spring came around and one of the biggest events of the year was held. Juniors and Seniors were now being teachers. It's Student Government Day. Many of the students spent two and three days preparing for their classes. This was one of the most success- ful events. With the year at an end, the council went on it's final outing. As a reward for their hard work, the council went to the Valley Steak House for a delicious meal, followed by a movie at the Falls Theater. This year's Council did a tremendous job and should be well commended. Margie Distad played librarian for the day and kept strict order in the library. TIGER BEAT ON THE GO! We, the Annual Staff of 1972, take pride in presenting our book. We hope that our many hours of hard work and effort will be as rewarding to you as it has been for us. Although, at many times we felt like it was an impossible task, we kept on going, with high hopes that this would be one of the best books to ever be made at Franklin. Now that the job is done, we know it was well worth all of our effort. Working on the annual isn't all its made out to be, or is it? HALLWAY’S HELPERS Seated: Ceri Eisenbarth, and Pam Lothert. YOUTH OF TODAY CITIZENS OF TOMORROW Boy's and Girl's State is something which everyone should go to for it is a rewarding experience. You learn many things you never knew about our government; equally as important is having new and lasting relationships with the people you meet there. At Boy's and Girl's Counties you learned about the duties of the county officers. Boy and Cirl Staten of 1971 are Donna Ness and Curtis Sather. Pam Lothert was picked Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow after taking a test which proved her to be highest scoring amongst the senior girls. Boys' and Girls' County from 1971 Paul Dummer, Valerie Koupal, Pam Lothert, and Mark Machtemes, seem to find the flags rather interesting during close inspection. Going to Boys' and Girls' County for 1972 are Carmen Anderson, Dave Munsell, Cyndy Poss, and Garnett Pederson. DECLAM ‘SPEAKS’ FOR ITSELF Toward the end of February most of Mr. O'Malley's classes were being interrupted by the voices of the declam students. Nineteen of the students here at FHS competed in the local finals. Of these students three were chosen from every category and one alternate. Row 1: Jane Eisenbarth, Rosalyn Hall, Barb Eisenbarth, Mary Jo Ruff, Mr. O'Malley. Row 2: Marth Rodvik, Kathy Forsythe, Mary Holtman, Leslie Munsell. District declam winners who went to the regional at Monti video were Mary Jo Ruff, Dave Munsell, and Ten Crain. Colleen receives a few last-minute instrue tions from Mr. O'Malley. Julie Dummer thought story telling to be lots of fun, especially to the kindergarde ners. Tome Gruendemann, Rosalyn Hall, and Dave Munsell went to the sub- district at Fairfax for humorous. Julie Dummer went on for stoiytelling; Mary Jo Ruff, Colleen Anderson, and Teri Crain for non-original oritory; Carmen Anderson for serious; Valerie Koupal for extemporanious; and Debbie Distad for original oritory. Seven of the students placed and five went on to perform at the district at Lamberton. Three of these students continued to go on to the regional in Monti video where they made a fine performance. FRANKLIN’S SPORT SPECIALS Lettermen's Club was not overly active this year. To raise money, the Lettermen sponsored an alumni - faculty basketball game, with the alumni winning in overtime. For the preliminary, the fifth grade took on the sixth grade boys. The proceeds from this game went to buy a movie camera to be used to film the athletic events of next year. Lastly, to get the students out of class for an after- noon, the Lettermen sponsored a basketball game between the varsity team and the faculty. Because the varsity wanted to win the last game of the year, they played inspired ball, and defeated the faculty soundly. To enjoy themselves, the Lettermen took in the Winter Sports Day in the Twin Cities. The basketball and hockey games were really good. All in all, F. H. S. can be proud of their Lettermen. The 1971-72 version of the Tigers had a rough season. The squad finished the season with a 6-13 record, which was quite respectable considering the fact that eight of those losses were by a margin of six points or less. Because of the inexperience of the team, they committed quite a few mechanical and mental errors which hurt the Tigers considerably. Coach Sandmann should be commended for the fine job he did with such a young team, and for the teams overall hustle and determination throughout the entire season. While the Tigers will be losing the playing and leadership ability of the two seniors, Randy Hall and Curt Sather, they will have five of die top seven coming back next season as they look forward to being a real contender. At its last team meeting, the Tigers named Randy Hall as the most valuable player, and Garnett Pederson as Cat of the Year. Those guys will never mess with Mr. Pederson again this. I his year the cheerleaders started out the year busy as usual. Early in the fall all three squads began selling their yearly calendar. Much hard work was put into this calendar, which brightens many homes in Franklin this year. After the work of the calendar the long hard grind of practice began. The A squad especial- ly looked forward to the beginning of the football season. Although the Tigers only won one game that one game thrilled all the cheerleaders. The basketball season was especially busy for all three of the chcerlcading squads. With the end of the season, the senior cheerleaders would like to say good luck to the future cheer- leaders of next year. Although the team never got in any duel matches, they did practice several times before their big debut at the conference meet at Sleepy F.ye. The Tigers came in last but showed good potential. At the district meet, the Tigers did better than both Sanborn and Wabasso and had a couple good individual performances. Those seven guys, who really liked golfing, did a fine job as Franklin's first golf team. During Homecoming they put in many hours making their homecoming float, but find- ing it all worthwhile by winning the Grand Prize. Then came the excitement of putting on their first class play, Harvey . They all used their acting ability to make the play a great success. Another activity which the Juniors undertook was the magazine sale which was fun but not as pro- fitable as they had hoped for. In the spring much work began in preparation for the Junior-Senior Prom in which many hours of discussion, planning, imagination and hard work were needed to make it the success it was. They had many thrilling moments during their Junior year and we wish them many more. Smile, Cyndy, you're on candid picture?????
