Democratic Victor — President Lyndon Johnson won the 1964 election by the greatest plurality and per cent of the total vote in U. S. history. Johnson became President at the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. Barry's Hattie for Votes—Sen. Barry Goldwater was surrounded by fans at Knoxville. Tenn., air- port September 16 as he campaigned for the presidency on the Republican ticket. The con- servative senator swept to a first-ballot nomina- tion at the convention in San Francisco. National Events in Review—1964 Nobel Prize Winner— Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr., right, was greeted by Richard C. Patterson, commissioner of public events, at Kennedy International Air- port Dec. 16 on arrival from Europe. Dr. King was in Oslo to receive the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. Cards are the Winners— Roger Craig leaped on a group of teammates surrounding the pitcher Bob Gibson mo- ments after the last out in the seventh World Series game won by the Rcdbirds over the Yankees. 7-5, in St. Louis. I'm the Greatest—Cassius Clay whooped it up w'ith his handlers after he won the world heavyweight title in Miami Beach in February. He was credited with a tech- nical knockout of Sonny Liston when Lis- ton failed to answer the bell for the sev- enth round. Alaskan Quake—A whole line of cars rest- ed about 20 feet below street level on a main thoroughfare in Anchorage the day following the disastrous earthquake on March 27. 1965 ATOM Published by THE FRANKL SENIOR o f IN P U B L CLASS C SCHOOL Photographs Courtesy of William's Studio Basketball history was made in Franklin during the 1965 season. After building a sixteen win and two loss regular season record, losing only to Gaylord and Gibbon, the Tigers went into tournament play to achieve these firsts in the his- tory of the school. The District Ten championship was the first achievement for the team. This was accomplished with four victories. Walnut Grove, Lamberton, Redwood Falls, and Springfield were the victims. All these games were decided by at least 12 points. The most rewarding win was in the championship game with Springfield. Franklin avenged last year's one point loss by walloping the defending champs and number one seeded team by 26 points, 77-51. Region Three was about the same story as District Ten with Franklin over-power- ing their opponents. Franklin upset undefeated Tracy in the first round 62-52 with strong rebounding and hot shooting. Against Granite Falls, the Tigers again dis- played hot shooting, tremendous fast breaks, rebounding, and great defense to completely outplay the Killowatts for a 77-5 win and State tournament entry. THE LONG AWAITED TROFHT Franklin's first tourna- ment entry was defeated by Minnetonka, eventually the State champs, by 76-5 . After playing even ball for almost three quarters, the State champ's superior height and defense wore the Tigers down and gave the Skippers a 22 point margin. In consolation play, Henning also defeated Franklin 75-65. thus giv- ing the Tigers a 22 win and h loss final record. They did just that by winning all of the games and pushing the undefeated string to 13 Belvierw was the only opponent to cross the Tigers goal line, scoring two touch- downs. For the second straight year the Franklin won the Straight Eight Conference championship. Corey Johnson, Dick Zeman, Steve Just, and Bob Hoffman were named to the all conference team. Ron Deming and Larry Anderson received honorable mention. Steve Hahler and Dave Johnson complete the list of seniors and also made find contribu- tions to the team. Two of the players, Steve Just and Bob Hoffman, were listed on the all District team. Hoffman also became the first player in the schools history to be named to the all State team. The main load was carried by the ninth grade boys, most of whom have had two or three years experience. Many of these boys showed promise of being good prospects to aid the varsity next year. The wins were over Boyd, Belview, Wabasso, and Echo. Hanley Falls conceded the game to the Tiger cubs since they could not field a team. One of the most promising points was the number of boys who were out for football. Each year more and more boys come out, thus encouraging the prospects for a winning varsity team.
