.Xe ,. Jim Peace and Sandy Graham pooled their efforts, hoping to sweep the field in the 400-yard freestyle. Team co-captain Brian Bates con- sistently led the field in the 'IOO-yard breast-stroke event. Daily warm-ups and practice sessions helped Sophomore tanker Mike Skender to better his time in the 100-yard butterfly event. f' U1 if S, , QA s A Patient Swimmers keep cool in community-property pool When the swimming team finally got into the pool it made good use of the opportunity, came up for the season with head above water, a 5-7 third in League. But Franklin's varsity swimmers had to share school facilities with Churchill classes, which ran till 6 P.M., and with girls' competitive swimming and Aqualites, the synchronized swimming group which contributed its bank balance toward an electric scoreboard for the pool. lt was new-coach year, too. Larry Teahan, a Livonia native, took over head coaching duties from Mr. Tavi- dian, who moved to Churchill. Mr. Zang replaced Mr. Girard as assistant. ln their first year the new coaches accompanied Senior co-captains Brian Bates and Bruce Cawetzka to Lansing for the State Swim Finals.

His Spaulding Special poised, Senior golfer Ron Crisp wound up to drive down the fairway. Ted Said leaped high to return his opponent's smash, hoping to gain another point toward victory. Golf drives into greens, Tennis set swings into spring Warm weather of spring brought tennis players and golfers out of hibernation and onto their respective courts and greens. Swings were practiced until perfected, and finally put into use on the proving grounds where one swing could make or break a match. Golfers were anything but green, scores dropped as quickly as the temperature rose. A 5-5 dual meet record along with Chris Roy being named All Conference topped the season. Finishing fourth in league competition added incentive to returning lettermen for the 1969 season. Tennis proved not to be such a profitable sport in the win-loss column. There is not much to glamorize about a 0-ll season, but the team did have fond mem- ories of coming close to beating crosstown rival Bentley.
