Among the changes were the improved cover and enlarged opening section of the book. Headed by jack Rogers, editor-in-chief, a competent staff had charge of the literary work of the Almanac. jack also directed the changes which were made in connection with lay-out, the addition of boxes for the names of offi- cers, and similar other improvements. The staff was very fortunate in the selection of the gifted Eloise Bair as art editor, who has done' an outstanding piece of work. Besides directing the art work, Eloise made all of the cuts for the division pages and the designs in the opening sections of the book. lt was Eloise who suggested that the theme be The Sea. This theme not only lent itself readily to illustration, but was also adaptable to the literary activities as expressed in the poems and stories. Assisting Eloise, were Milton Ballinger and Glen Anderson. Milton made all of the cuts from Eloise's designs, and Glen Anderson mounted the senior and club pictures for the engraver. john Collins was staff cartoonist and did an amusing page called The Big Apple. Dorothy Ingham, editor of the Press, assisted jack Rogers in making the layout and writing many of the stories for the activities section. Marjorie Cummings, literary editor, was an all-around help on the staff. Backed by valuable experience which she received as assistant to the asso- ciate editor of the Press, Marjorie wrote club stories and helped in other ways. Gathering together all of the achievements of the Seniors, typing a great deal of the material, together with writing many of the club stories, were only a few of the jobs of Bette Hooper and Marguerite Bangs, associate edi- tors. Both girls had previous training in Mrs. Church's classes, and both wrote senior essays. According to the critical estimates of two scholastic press associations of two great universities, the Franklin Press has reason to feel proud. The Na- tional Scholastic Press Association of the University of Minnesota awarded the Franklin Press All-American honors in a nation-wide contest. Translated into less technical terms, All-American means Superior, a rating which only ten other high school papers in the U.S. with similar enrollments received. From the Press Association of Columbia University, the Franklin Press re- ceived second place in their national contest-an enviable achievement. Albert Dickey was the competent editor-in-chief during the winter semes- ter, and Charles Goddard, during the spring. During the winter semester, Georgia Sanborn added color to the feature page of the Press by her human interest stories of forgotten people and places. Lynette Russell did outstanding work as feature editor and as a contributor to her own page. l-ler Faculty Review was but one of her achievements. Glen Pifari was the associate editor who did such good work on the back page that the judges of the National Scholastic service were moved to say that the back page was as interesting a piece of work as the front page. Morris Denton was Glen Pifari's assistant. Others on the fall semester were Carolyn Nevius and john Garland, assis- tant feature writers, jimmy De Long, Katherine Rorex, Madeline Russell, jill Caswell, and Virginia Richards, special writers. At the beginning of the summer semester, Glen Pifari became editor-in- chief, but due to an injury he received while working after school, the office was taken over by Dorothy Ingham, assistant editor, and Tom Fuller, sports editor, who became co-editors-in-chief. Reno Economon was made sports editor, assisted by Lawrence Smith and jack Kirkpatrick. Feature page head, Olive Brochiero, was assisted by Betty Burton, Babbie Bogue, and Byron Shaw. Cartoonists were Margot Keith and Kiyoshi Takano. Other summer staff heads were Morris Denton, associate editor, and Marjorie Cummings, his assistant, Wendela Petz, girls' sports edi- tor, Katherine Meyers, news editorg Paulette Dombrower, club editor. Fred Hill was business manager. Mrs. Kate Cranon is the journalism instructor. Mr. Ewart johnston heads the printing staff. The students in this activity participate not only in publiciz- ing school affairs, but also in debate tournaments, and in oratorical contests. They also represent the school in league debates with other schools, ln the past season's major league debates with Los Angeles, Fairfax, and Venice High Schools, Franklin, represented by lack Blum and Leland Kan- nenberg, won over Los Angeles High. Eugene Roddenberry entered in the Southern California Debate and Ora- torical Contest held at the University of Southern California. Under Eugene's guidance, practice debates were carried on with Cathedral High and Hunting- ton Park High. 76 19 ALMANAC 'K' 38 Fred Hill, veteran debater, spoke on Freedom of the Press at the annual forensic tournament held at Los Angeles junior College in May. George Pimentel, jack Blum, Leland Kannenberg, Ted Delmar, Eugene Rod- denberry, james Craddock, Sidney Simmons, and Bob Blum, were Franklin representatives at the League Debate Tournament held at the University of Southern California in May. Here john Madsen and Marion Scheid took third place as orators. During the fall term Tom Mahoney served as debate manager and during the spring term Eugene Roddenberry filled this important position. His as- sistant was George Pimentel. Coaching students to represent Franklin at all-city contests is not the only activity of the public speakers. Students are coached to give campaign speeches for all types of drives throughout the school. During the Almanac campaign, the Old Clothes and Press drives and the Community Chest Cam- paigns, public speakers interested the student body in the projects by earn- est, well-constructed talks. Students who took part in campaigns were Lyle Tice, Paul Mascot, Leon Simmons, Eugene Roddenberry, George Pimentel, Mary jane Mclntyre, and O'Dessa McDannald. Following the Marshall fray, the Printers traveled to Garfield where they ran over a weak Bulldog team, 33-O. I-Ialfback Orv Hatcher ran wild as he scored four touchdowns on brilliant runs. joe Lazzerretto, Dick Sparks, and Le Roy Cruce played bang up games on the line for the Panthers. In what was destined to be their last game, Belmont was defeated I3-6. After a week of rain and another of uncertainty, the annual game with Lincoln was cancelled by mutual agreement. Orv Hatcher, Ross Walker, joe Rondoni, jack Arian, Le Roy Cruce, Dick Brayton, Tracy Robinson, jack Lee, Ted Fahnstock and Cliff Mayfield ended their high school careers, Halfback Orv Hatcher, Fullback Stan Kading, and Le Roy Cruce, and Guard Dick Sparks gained All-Northern recognition. B FOOTBALL Leading the league the entire season, the B football team, under the tutor- ship of Coach Lee Duke, lost to Lincoln I3-O in the last game and dropped to fourth position in the final postings. The sensational long range galloping of Don Boyer was the highlight of early performances. Don scampered 65, 60, and 35 yards against jefferson, Roosevelt and Marshall respectively. Diminutive Sam Lee, joe Gross, Sherwin Stewart, Captain jack Cassidy, jack Rogers and Bill Kitchen were outstanding individual performers the entire year. The Bens put the damper on powerful jefferson and Fremont elevens in practice, and Marshall and Garfield in league frays. Facing Belmont in the last game, the Dukemen were set to strap down the crown but were held to a scoreless tie by a tough I-Iilltopper crew. APPARATUS Led by Coach Francis McCollom and Captain Bill Bennett, the gym team completed a five meet schedule with two wins and three defeats. The locals experienced their worst beating at the educated muscles of Gar- field and Roosevelt. Marshall, a newcomer of the apparatus league, and Lin- coln, fell before the McCollom men by 97-47 and 74V2-69V2 scores. Captain Bennett, Alanson Mason, Ben Moonitz, Bob Westlake, Russell Moody, john Goetz, Sammy Lee, and Zeke Irvin were the leading scorers. Roosevelt was the first opponent of the Bens. The Kiteflyers were butch- ered, 5O-l9. The underdog Panthers scored a scorching upset a week later when a favored Marshall five fell, 35-34. Captain Tom Fuller reached the local high score mark, making l9 points. Forward Royal Lininger rang up l3 points to lead Franklin to victory over their traditional rivals, the Lincoln Tigers. With two apparently weak teams ahead, the locals faltered and were upset by Garfield 34-32. Belmont was the last foe, the game ending 22-19 in favor of Franklin. Harold Tomkins played outstanding defensive ball, holding two Sentinel forwards to a point apiece. The high scorer for the year was Fuller who tallied 64 points in five games, with Lininger and Ray Moser close behind. George Blatchley was the fifth member turning in several brilliant games. B BASKETBALL Easily the darkest spot on Pantherdom's fall sports menu, was the disas- trous campaign of the B basketball team. When the final standings were posted the B's had five defeats and no victorigs. The pre-season outlook was none too bright as only one letterman, Cap- tain Bob Quibell, was on hand when practice beganf Ray Hall, Hal Thomas, Ledyard Baldwin, Don Redmond and jack Friend made up the combination that was not quite up to Northern League standards. All of these players played their last game for Franklin except Hall. Thomas and Hall took scoring honors with Quibell and Redmond perhaps the most consistent players. G.A.A. LETTERMEN Letters are awarded to members of the C.A.A. after they have earned 600 points. With each subsequent ZOO points, a star is added to the plain letter. Led by the slugging of catcher Dick Sparks and second baseman Larry Smith, and the big league hurling of l-larold Hook Phillips, the Panthers led the league from start to finish. Smith topped the league in batting, main- taining a mark of 526. Sparks batted an even IO for 20 for a .SOO mark. Phillips pitched a total of 43 innings, allowing I8 runs including errors, and struck out 49. Early season form failed to put the Bens in the title class as hitting was poor and fielding worse. However, as the season opened, the boys began to hit, fielding became consistent, and coupled with a winning spirit that has been definitely absent in past years, they marched through the league in a cake walk. S 0 F T B A L L Winning three out of eight games, Franklin's softball teams ended the sea- son in last place. Due to rains, the Bens' practice season consisted of four days practice be- fore they met Belmont, their first opponent. The Sentinels won both games. The outstanding pitching performance of the year was turned in by Bob l-loyle when he set Belmont down with one hit and won a 3 to O shutout. jack Lee, joe lvlargucci, Cliff Mayfield, Bill Reinke, and Chuck Lazzeretto were the leading hitters. Boy I-loyle, Walt l-licks, loe Lazzeretto, and Harry Zlatin were the pitchers. TENNIS With both teams sporting an undefeated record and the title going to the winner, FrankIin's crack crew of netters met and were defeated by the classy Marshall Barristers in the last match of the season landing in second place. Captain Elwin Craigmile led the Panthers through the brilliant season win- ning five matches without a defeat. Ace Nolan lVlcQuown, playing at first singles, won four matches with overwhelming scores. Capably handled by Coach Walter Ciilbert, the locals were formidable foes as they marched through four matches in a cake walk. Lincoln fell 7-Og Roosevelt, 6-lg Belmont, 5-2, and Carfield, 5-2. Marshall was the first to fall before the strong Panthers, and Lincoln took a severe drubbing two weeks later. Hurdler Tom DIeiWitt led the local spikemen with a sensational sixty-point league total, and went on to the City meet. Captain Don Boyer proved a con- sistent winner in the century and furlong, and Lawrence Antista in the mile showed a lot of class with victories in three league battles. Other point win- ners were Hackett johnson, 880g Hobart Kelly, pole-vaulterg jack Barnes, 4403 Frank Hites, high jumper, and Royal Lininger, broad jumper. The Novice and Inter-Class meets uncovered a host of potential stars that will go to make up Franklin's future track teams. B TRACK The Franklin lightweight tracksters fared badly in four dual meets, with one win over Marshall to balance three defeats, but they staged a surprise in the triangular, with a triumph over Belmont and Marshall. . The B's took a large part of their scores in the sprints and field events. Don Munro and jack Cassidy furnished the necessary power in the I00 and 220, Munro also excelling in the low hurdles and broad jump, Ray Hall drew points in the high hurdlesg Kenny Foreman was outstanding in the shotg and Deck Yagar consistently topped the field in the pole-vault. Others who turned out excellent individual work were Nordyck in the high jumpg Brown and Bryant in the 6601 and Sanderson in the 1320. C TRACK Failing to win any of their four league meets the Class C track team man- aged to qualify five men for the city prelims. As a result of placing in the Northern League finals Phil Meyers, 660, Mike Callas, low hurdles, Colvin Cardin, shot-put, Don Ventrilla, broad jump, and Dick Metcalf, 660, were the five qualifiers. Phil Meyers along with Don Munro, class B hurdler, garnered the only first places for Franklin in the league finals. Other mainstays of the team were Roy Barber and jack McCarter, pole vault and sprints respectively. Although beaten in all of their dual meets the C tracksters out-scored the team from Marshall, who had previously defeated them 44-33, in a trian- gular meet which was won by Belmont. INTRA-MURAL SPORTS Under the guidance of Athletic Managers Cecil Nunn and Sammy Lee, Fran-klin enjoyed a wide scope of intra-mural sp6ETfFTfITe' past year. The novice and inter-class track meets were again run off with success and much enthusiasm. The twelfth grade nabbed first honors with the eleventh year men a good margin back. As a few of the faster performers ran past, Coach Spangler recruited them for his track forces. Tom DeWitt and Don Boyer led the scoring. Next came the handball tournament which turned into a hot battle with lack Austin, Fred Darling, Frank Hites and l-lenry Wheatley surviving over 60 of the school's choice swat artists. lack Austin ultimately won the tourney, beating Fran-k Hites in the finals. Football, Basketball, Apparatus, Baseball, Soft- ball, Track and Colf contributed to these figures. Baseball accounted for six victories, Tennis four, and Ciolf four. Class B athletics ended with 5 wins and 7 losses. The poor showing of the B basketball team which failed to win a game explains these figures. The lightweight footballers were knocked from the top of league standing to fourth place as the result of their last game defeat by Lincoln. Class C scored 4 wins to 5 defeats. Under the supervision of head coach, Tony Spangler, the Panther athletic brain trust consisted of Coach Duke, Coach Hess, Coach McCollom, Coach Downing and Coach C-ilbert. Although unpublicized these sport intellectuals played leading roles in gathering those 27 victories. A word, a dozen or so, can be said for Franklin's plucky pep squad who adorn the front cover of this section. When it came to making noise or quietly getting things done, the palm was handed over to Doug Brown and his assistants, Phil Meyers, Mike Callas, Spencer Price and Sam Lee. Congrats to Athletic Managers Cecil Nunn and Sam Lee. Nunn was han- dicapped by the lack of possible ts in the fall year, but the crowded schedule of the spring year more than made up for this. Novice and inter-class trackmeets were run off, handballers conducted their annual tour- ney and the swimmers were treated to their dip. Pantherdom garnered its first championship in a goodly number of years when its classy varsity nine waltzed through a six-game season undefeated. With plenty of experience on hand, Coach Duke moulded a fast working nine together that was the class of the league if not the city. Second sacker Lawrence Smith and catcher Dick Sparks swung mean bats, maintaining averages of .526 and .500 respectively. l-larold Phillips, clever left-hand hurler, provided the pitching which was of class AA quality. This marks the last season of Baseball for Franklin after some l8 or l9 years of pellet swatting. The Buff and Blue added another sport to their overflowing curriculum as Colf entered into an officially organized city league. They ended right on top tool Lee Duke was the coach. Taking two of four dual meets, the varsity tracksters were shoved back to last place in the Northern League Finals held at Garfield. Lincoln and Mar- shall fell before the Ben forces in dual meets but outclassed the locals in the final get together. Only three Kiteflyers, the smallest number in years, qualified for the city prelims. Tom De Witt in the hurdles, Don Boyer in the sprints and Larry An- tista in the mile. 91 W ' OZ '-'- 'v'4-N 7AAM,2Ag,, Q.,.,.,4 AMMWM, f7f ,uAJ , - 78 Z E?
