MIZ. W. L. LONG AQQIQMNT PRINCIPAL, FRANKLIN DE!-ANO ROOSEVELT HIGH QC!-IOOL Congratulations to the loyal Mustangs who publish this second edition of our year- book. Its dedication to books, the oldest and still the most reliable of modern teaching machines, is in keeping with our commitment to a lifetime of literary pleasure and profit. No one can be truly educated who does not cultivate a love for good books, for they are the repositories of all that is good and evil in man. No one can be bored who can make vicarious use of the minds of others through the reading of good books. I f W. L. Long Assistant Principal

F-BOM OUIZ PRINCIPAL I have never read a book I did not like, or met a teacher I could not respect. This paraphrase and its addition calls for an explanation. It is unthinkable that all of the books andfor all teachers, professional, or otherwise have been cherished by me or found a place in my mental library as literary masterpieces, or paragons of virtue. For me, it means that I have always wanted to know what teachers said and how and why they said it . . . been interested in how their words squared with their deeds, how their way of life and living differed from other people I knew, both pro- fessional and non-professional, both rich and poor, both white and black. I have always wondered what words of wisdom, of challenge or tripe, were hidden between the covers of books. This curiosity has later paid great dividends Knot neces- sarily financialj in the sheer enjoyment of searching for truth . . . which frees the mind of superstition, pseudoeducation, cynicism, pride, and haughtiness. And so, we are indebted to the annual staff, students, and teachers for the selection of this year's theme . . . Books . . . and for the dedication of this yearbook to some of the Dallas Independent School District's most illustrious teachers. Not only do these men and women represent an aggregate of two hundred fifty years of instructing our youth, but also represented here are authors, journalists, successful businessmen, church organists, city recreation director, and outstanding religious leaders. This is the plus value of a great teacher . . . a great person. To phrase William Blake- W hen thou seest a master teacher, Thou seest genius. Lift up your heads. Qing ZMZQVMJ
