BROWN . . . and the that fire C, C, TEDFORD can worldf, JOHN KENNEDY We, the staff of the 1967 Mustang and the senior proudly dedicate this edition of the yearbook to six of our teachers who have taught for an aggregate and fifty years. You have been a source of instruction, F counseling, understanding and love. Your jobs and dedication to the cause of education have been We know this small gesture can in no way repay y for t e many hours you have spent helping us and 'other boys and girls. Nevertheless, for all of your unselfish ess, t boys and girls we are inspired to go forth furthering our education and hoping that we too will be of some se ice o others. After doing some research we found numerous pers s in our community that are good citizens because you taught and guided them. Some of your students have be and are good parents, social workers, ministers, lawyers, teachers and physicians. Humbly we say, Thank you for having given so much of yourselves. I3 THEME Books are not men, and yet they are alive, They are man's memory and his aspirations The link between his present and his past, The tools he builds with, all the hoarded thoughts W innowed and sifted from a million minds Living and dead, to guide him on his way. Ammon UNKNOWN Here at the Franklin Delano Roose- velt High School we find hundreds of students making use of thou- sands of hooks. These provide us with the key to the inner door of real knowledge and charge us with a great responsibility. The across-the-table chatterers of- ten find that they have misused the offered key, for the key is portioned out to those who make valid use of hooks and who willing- ly become acquainted with some of the greatest poets, writers, scien- tists, and philosophers. We can open hooks anywhere and find we have much to gain. Always, though the greatest gain is the initiation of an insatiable desire to choose more and even better hooks. -The theme of this annual is hooks. The pur- pose is to emphasize the import- ance of hooks in our lives. I4 ww 1. , f - qv, ,,-Mgiilfhkv 7 'ffnsfx A Q' ,Q kQQ ' .. 1 Q' 1 A i I in ii U 'fy yihuwmu - n-vw mu W EW,-2? ALQEQIJ. wruuws PRINCIPAL. FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT I-HGH SCHOOL ' F-BOM OUIZ PRINCIPAL I have never read a book I did not like, or met a teacher I could not respect. This paraphrase and its addition calls for an explanation. It is unthinkable that all of the books andfor all teachers, professional, or otherwise have been cherished by me or found a place in my mental library as literary masterpieces, or paragons of virtue. For me, it means that I have always wanted to know what teachers said and how and why they said it . . . been interested in how their words squared with their deeds, how their way of life and living differed from other people I knew, both pro- fessional and non-professional, both rich and poor, both white and black. I have always wondered what words of wisdom, of challenge or tripe, were hidden between the covers of books. This curiosity has later paid great dividends Knot neces- sarily financialj in the sheer enjoyment of searching for truth . . . which frees the mind of superstition, pseudoeducation, cynicism, pride, and haughtiness. And so, we are indebted to the annual staff, students, and teachers for the selection of this year's theme . . . Books . . . and for the dedication of this yearbook to some of the Dallas Independent School District's most illustrious teachers. Not only do these men and women represent an aggregate of two hundred fifty years of instructing our youth, but also represented here are authors, journalists, successful businessmen, church organists, city recreation director, and outstanding religious leaders. This is the plus value of a great teacher . . . a great person. To phrase William Blake- W hen thou seest a master teacher, Thou seest genius. Lift up your heads. Qing ZMZQVMJ MIZ. W. L. LONG AQQIQMNT PRINCIPAL, FRANKLIN DE!-ANO ROOSEVELT HIGH QC!-IOOL Congratulations to the loyal Mustangs who publish this second edition of our year- book. Its dedication to books, the oldest and still the most reliable of modern teaching machines, is in keeping with our commitment to a lifetime of literary pleasure and profit. No one can be truly educated who does not cultivate a love for good books, for they are the repositories of all that is good and evil in man. No one can be bored who can make vicarious use of the minds of others through the reading of good books. I f W. L. Long Assistant Principal OUP! WAITING By-CLARENCE OLIVER In a dream that I recall A day in autumn when the leaves fall. I went to the bottom of a hill, To wait for a boy named Bill. I waited until the people turned out their light, And all the little boys put up their bikes. Then I went home to rest my head, In my little brown and black hed. LOVE By-MARY HUGHES Love is a thing unknown, Unconquered canyon of loneliness Where your farest thoughts roam. Where there is no thought but your own. SHARING By-SANDRA ERICKS The world is filled with bitterness, There's not much love out there, The greatest problem of today, We don't know how to share. If sister and brother starts today, By leaming how to care, Then sooner or later, eventually, We all will leam to share. The purpose of our being here, As simple as it may beg God the father of us all, We love and worship thee. AUTUMN By-ALICE HARPER There must be frost on those fiddles under the moon, Autumn is coming, autumn is coming soon. The last of the crickets push the dry leaves Before each do-Or. To look at the flowers, being moved from place to place, How sad a picture it is. The clouds are hanging low With a sad black color. The trees are without leaves, The sun does not shineg neither will the stars come out. APOLLO By-BRENDA MUTONG There I see nxnning through the trees A man running after his love to be. He ran so hard to catch his love But in a flash she had turn into a tree I touched her hair which had turned into leaves, Her blood had turn into sap. I put the leaves altogether and made a laurel-wreath SPECTRUM By-BARBARA THOMAS Beads that flow like a sunshine ray, Colors that diffuse in every way Enhances a flickering enchantment And falls like jewels so content. Dim lights that lure with a shadowy dew, That sprinkles the sigh of a hue. As fire beauty curves beams, This is what a spectrum means. The cool, clean breezes Whistling its song. The early nightfall Brings the cold wind Saying, It's Autumn. A DREAM By-GWENDOLYN JACKSON I dreamed I was the queen of the wild frontier Where the bawl Of a steer was music to my ear. For a queenly crown In a noisy town My life I wouldn't change No life so free As the life we see Way out on the country range The winds may blow And the thunder growl The breezes may safely moan- A queen's life Is a royal life My house is my heavenly throne. AN UNIVITED TUNE By-WANDA HILL A whisper of sadness, a tearful farewell Is like signaling the down drafts or the air to hell For though a river of sadness an ever flowing sea A dirge will, be heard for you! And for mel AUTUMN ByfDELOISE PHILLIPS How memory cuts away the years, And clean the picture comes Of autumn days brisk and busy, Charged with keen sunshine. I AWAKE By-BRANDON SOWELS In the morning before the sun is up: I rise to see the dew on every butter CHP: Oh! what fun it is to see Mother Nature's beauty awakening All around me. DAWN By-JAMES JOHNSON Dawn is the break of day: It's just like the beginning of birth, it's some- thing new. I LOVE THEE ByvJANLr LONG Amid these days of fun and folly, Your name but often comes to mind. But I dare not stop to think on it For I love you, dear, too dearly. This love of mine haunts me so. Neither day or night does it from me part. It is for you alone that it does so exist, For I love you, dear, so dearly. Though some loves fade and are forgotten, And some contend that it is rightly soy But for my love this shall never be For I love you, dear, too dearly. TWILIGHT By-VIKKI FAUNE SIMMONS I stood beside a hill Smooth with new fallen snow, A single star looked out From the cold evening glow. There was no other creature That saw what I could see- I stood and watched the evening star As long as it watched me. VESPER BELLS By-MARY c. BLAIR Faintly, I hear them ringing, Sweetly as children singing, Rippling the evening breeze That gently sways the trees. With them-birds can't compare The limelight with no one they share. They are the most bewitching way To create a perfect day. SYMPHONY By-BARBARA GAUSE A symphony of autumn leaves is very beautiful to me. It is our sincere desire that it is with similar esteem that you regard this year's annual Mustang '67, As you thumb through its pages we, along with the other annual staffers, hope that its pictorial ac- count of student life at F.D.R. will recall to you fond memories of experiences long past. Student life at Roosevelt is quite difficult to cap- sule into a single publication, it has so many facets. Nevertheless, we endeavored untiringly to do so. You, the students at F.D.R., alone can determine whether we failed or succeeded. We wish to thank all faculty members, Mrs. O. G. Williams, Mr. C. Tedford, Mrs. M. Riley, Mr. .l. Jackson, Mrs. E. Lewis, Mrs. P. Gardner, Mr. J. Strong, Mr. E. Metcalf, Mrs. A. Cofield, Miss V. Turner and Mrs. M. Carroll, who provided the necessary guidance and assistance in this endeavor. But most of all, rraftsmanship is pride in the job - pride that goes beyond pay or prire or profit. Craftsnlanship is not a system that ran be installed by engineers. It is an indefinable element that is bred into the fabrir of an organization by inspired leadership and unending insistenee upon produeing only the finest, Craftsmanship works through the mind and the hand, but its genesis is in the heart.
