By method of flag hoist, flashing light, and semaphore the Signal Bridge transmits vital maneuvering, administrative, and operational ltacticall information to 3hipS in company. Concerned for the international relations between the United States and Soviet Bloc countries, the relaying of ROOSEVELT'S maneuvering intentions to foreign shipping becomes of paramount importance. Through use of international signals, recently designed specifically for this purpose, the Signal Bridge supports our nation's efforts to make the sea lanes a safer place for world mariners. While steaming under restrictions of EMCON lemission controll-perhaps more commonly known as radio siIence - the signalmen are solely responsible for the coordination of task group maneuvering communica- tions. The safety of the small boys lescort destroyersl participating in the hazardous ship formation environment is directly linked to the precision and speed at which the signalmen perform.
