V., , I1 I t grit, n l IN A FLURRY 0F ACTI ITY... ROOSEVELTS crew realized that a Med cruise is more than two weeks of flight oper- ations then three weeks in Barcelona or Athens. On October 6th the i973 Middle East War broke out. ROOSEVELT left Barcelona on schedule and steamed east to operate with the Independence, the Kennedy, and other ships of the United States' Sixth Fleet. Providing air navigational aids and refueling and rest stops for Israel-bound warplanes, the Sixth Eleet's presence in the Eastern Med undoubtedly had a quieting effect on the warring nations.
