ROY' S BELCIE-IEE, Jr CoI11:r11ar1c1er,U' S Navy EXECUTIVE OFFICER Commander Roy S. Belcher, Ir. qradu- ated from Topeka High School, Topeka, Kansas in l933. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kansas State College, Manhattan, Kan- sas in l94O and entered the Navy that same year as an aviation cadet. He received his flight training at Pensacola and Miami, Florida. Following his commissioning at Miami in Iune of 1941, Commander Belcher was as- signed to duty as a flight instructor at Corpus Christi, Texas, and later served with anti- submarine carrier loased squadrons in both the Atlantic and Pacific. At the close of World War ll, he was Commanding Officer of Torpedo Squadron THREE which was assigned to USS KEAR- SARGE. Since the War, Commander Belcher has attended the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, and the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia. He has served as Officer in Charge of Basic Training Unit THREE at Pensacola, Floridap as Executive Officer of VAW-l2 at Ouonset Point, Rhode lsland, and as Air Officer of the escort car- rier USS MINDORO.

EDWARD VV. HESSEI... Captain, U. S. Navy Captain Edward W. I-Iessel was gradu- ated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1937 where he lettered two years as a tackle in football. Upon graduation he served a short tour aboard USS WEST VIRGINIA prior to reporting to NAS Pensacola, Florida in 1939 where he underwent flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1940. Since then he has flown in many types of naval aircraft and held many positions of com- mand. Later assigned to VE-72 in 1940, he saw service aboard several now famous carriers including USS RANGER, USS WASP, USS SARATOGA, USS IIORNET, USS ENTER- PRISE, and USS NASSAU. In 1943 he reported to NAS Kingsville, Texas for duty until a year later in 1944 when he became Commanding Officer of VE-82 aboard USS BENNINGTON CCV-201. It was at this time that the first carrier strikes of World War II were being made on Tokyo. During one of these strikes, in April of 1945, Captain I-Iessel was shot down by lapanese antiaircraft at Minami Daito and was picked up by OSZU aircraft. I-le holds the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with six stars for capture and consolidation of Guadacanal, Buim-Paisi, the Stewart Islands, Iwo lima, and Okinawa. The post-war years found him once again at the U. S. Naval Academy, but this time as a seamanship instructor and football coach. After two years at the Academy, he com- manded Carrier Air Group SEVEN aboard USS PHILLIPPINE SEA and USS LEYTE. Later he served a year as Executive Officer with EALLWEATRALANT in Key West, Flori- da, after which he spent six months at the Armed Forces Staff College under instruction. In 1952 Captain lclessel became I-lead of Aircraft Section of Military Requirements and New Development for Naval Operations. I-Iis first major carrier command came two years later when, in 1954, he became Executive Officer of USS LAKE Cl-IAIVIPLAIN. Then, after a year as Commanding Officer of VC-4, he returned to Naval Operations as head of the Air Training Branch. I-le later attended the National War College from August 1953 to lune 1959. In luly 1959, Captain I-lessel was assigned as Commanding Officer of USS NAVASOTA CAO-1061. Captain Hessel re- lieved Captain Winters as Commanding Officer of the ROOSEVELT on Iune 10, 1960.
