D. ROOSEVELT as a true Ambassador of Peace -and a good neighbor, too, was firmly established when she delivered l70 tons of food and medical supplies to Greece, ravished by earthquakes in the summer of l953. USS FDR greatly assisted local authorities and civilian units in restoring order by bringing life-giving supplies to the victims of the Ar- gostoli disaster. After the FDR returned to the States from this Mediterranean tour, she em- barked on her first South American cruise, bound for a 48 million dollar con- version at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. Decommissioning began on April 23, l952, and was followed by an ex- tensive two year face lifting and modernization, which added the angled deck, hurricane bow, streamlined island structure and up-to-date improve- ments on arresting gear and catapults. Final modifications were completed in 1956, and recommissioning ceremonies signaled the return to duty of this mighty carrier.
