There are compensations . . . the excitement of new lands and cultures . . . but always there is that deep, fervent yearning for what was left behind . . . familiar emotions at familiar times . . . the wistful feeling of emptiness at sunset . . . the damp blackness of night at sea . . . the lonely wail of the fog horn . . . sounds and feelings we'll never forget. This is the story of three thousand men who shared those feelings . . . three thousand proud men who breathed life into a ship with a glory- studded past . . . who turned the world's 3rd largest vessel into one of the nation's defensive bulwarks . . . a mighty warning to those who would threaten our way of life.
