COASS HUSTORY Age is not 011 decayed. It is tho ripening, the svelling of the fresh life. Within it things wither and then burst from the tmsk. Each age is a dream that is dying, or one which is coming to birth. The class of 1944 has already passed through tho following ages: Tho first age was thot of ignorance™, ds a group of green Freshmen we entered high school in Soptamber of 1940. our class was then the second largest cless of this school, We plodded along a winding road leading to Franklin County Training School, we bever ¢reamed of tho various changes time would brings How greon we were during that first age. However, it waa not long before we found that everyone expected us to be that way. The Freshman class then had two divisions. Miss Me Re Perrin was tho sponsor of the A Division, Mrse 3. He Undervood, the B Division, end Mrs. Mp Be Payton tho C Division, Mary Belle Branch became ve president of tho A Division, Bessio Foster headed the BY Division, omd Walter Edgerton led the 0 Division. We went @irectly to work by winning the popularity contest with the splondid aid of Miss Lillion Massenburg who was cromed “Miss F, C, T. Su” at the Homecoming Football game. Then with the aid of our touchers who helped us to rise from the’nge of ignorance the greon freshmen tocame more dighificds Before the close of the second semester, the oratorical contest was held. We had long dreamed of the taking place in our livesm it’seemed as our dreams wera about to come true a8 school closed, We return ed to our respective homese The next age was th tof Wisdom We’ entered school as sophomores and with a much smallor group, This year tho class had only two divisions, A and BY with Mirse Underwood and Miss Porrin as our sponsors, and Russoll Wilkins hending the AN Division and Edward Arrendell president of the B Divisione Some of us did things in the years before which now seanud foolish to us. As sophomores, wo spent « large part of our time tonsing tho freshmen, thon after o short while wo pgan to work, Somo of our classmates bocame mambors of the Debating Toame ‘Those vere: Russell Willins, Sallie Johnsen, Mary Johnson, Baxter Yarborough and Annic Kelley. During this year, anothor popularity contost wes held, and Mary Willie Johnson became “Miss F. C. T. S.” At the Homecoming Games We were very glad that eight of the sophomores were fortunate enough to be selected as waiters at the Junior-Senior Banquet. They were: Mary We Johnsen, Cleora Grssom, Bessie L. Foster, dunie B. Perry, Beautrice Edgergon, Sallio Johnson, Russell Wilkins, and Walter Edgerton, nother year rolled on, and a large number of us completed the work of our grade and were reody to ontor the Junior Class, We wore very sorry to lose one of our beloved classmteg, Mary W. Johnson, who is now living in Baltimore. This year the class had decreased to a smmller numbor. Later the class organized ond cleeted its officers who were: Edward Arrendoll, President with Mrs. Underwood and Miss Perrin as our sponsors. Our elcss took activo part in tho Big Broadcast end was lucky enough to win first prize. Later ve sponsored a party for Halloween ond it was held at the home of Zelm dimderson, A number of the students of this class were among the monbers of the cast of Mlmor and Tho Lovebug. Edward Arrendell was the Lovebug. Others participating wore: Bessie Foster, Arthur Alston, Hzcll Gibson, Annie Kelley, Josephine and Sallie Johnson, Benutrice Edgerton, Cleora Grissom, and Annie Perry. We weve very sorry to lose ono of our beloved teachers, Mrs. Underwood who resigned to accept work at her home, but we were glad thet Revercnd 4. G. Coley who fillod her place, has been our sponsor sincc. Later, the othor sponsor, Miss M. Re Porrin rosigned to accept work in Winston Sclem at Atkins High, and this left only Revorend Coloy to use On August 23, 1943, wo re-entered school agoin with still a amallor class, having oxoctly one-third of the number we had when we were freshmon, but the fow rem.ining ones struggled vory hard to romain until the cnds So at last we havo comploted the long hard journey through high school. Tho Glass of '44 presonted the Big Boradeast™ and we also presented our Senior Play on April Sthm entitled For Money or Love, Those taking part were: Hdwerd Arrendell, Essie Driver, Ivory Harris, James Pearco, Gleora Grissom, Zzel1 Gibson, Louise Greene, Bonutrice Edgerton, Clyde Vevis, ond Zolma Anderson, We wore very sorry to lose one our classmates, Baxter Yarborough to the Navye 4 number of students played important parts in the program of Extra-Curricular activitics from this class. They wero as follows: Student Council- Cleora Grissom, Bessio Foster, Essic Driver, and ond Irenc Wrighte Football: ivory Harris, Tomes Poarce, Haverd Arrehdcll, and Arthur {lstone hur Alston, Ezoll Gibson, tah Williams, Bessie Foster, Basketball: Edward Arrendoll, Leonard Hawkins, Anna Williams Zelma Andorsob, ond Annie B.
