In the fall of 1939 a group of one hundred and twenty- eight Freshmen entered F.C.1.S. to commence a long journey toward graduation. This was the largest group to be enrolled in a Freshman class at F.C.1.S.e. The class was divided into two divisions. Miss Hill was made sponsor of the A divi- sion, and Mr. Holden was made sponsor of the B division. The A'' division elected Thaddeus Hayes as president, and the B division elected Clarence Evans, The outstanding event of the Freshman year was the Freshman Declamatory Contest. Each division was represented by three speakers and the winner was Dorothy Ellis who left the class in the Junior year to reside in New York state. The class was also proud of the fact that it won first prize in the annual Big Broadcast of that years At commencement perfect attendance certificates wore reccived by Harold Green and Lottie Wright. Bernice Johnson and Emma Johnson, who were attending Mebane High School at that timc,also received perfect attendance certificates. Sixty-six of the one hundred and twenty-cight returned bo F.C.T.S. to begin the second mile of their journey through ¥.C.1.S.e Mrs. Strickland and Jacob Williams were elected pre- sidents of their respective divisions. The class gained a great deal of recognition im athletics in that the Sophomore class had more representatives in this activity than any other class in the school. Mozella Thomas and Louise Harris joined the Public Speaking Club.Harold Green represonted the class on tho Student Council and Jacob Williams became a manber of the staff of the Franklin Reporter. Though no records were broken during the Sophomore year, that yoar gave to the class the wisdom necded for entrance into a Junior year at F.0.1.S.. Mrs. Strickland was elected president of the class.
