Treasured with an unavailing cry, Stifled beneath a wearisome aching heart. Dear classmates, sorrow now pefalis us As we leave our Alma Mater kind friopdiy and true; To now fulfill our work to us made precious And keep in mind thy counsel, our promises too. Tribute to you, dear faculty, we pays Who forged in us worthy ideals, to defends By your continuous effort every day Has fitted us to face society's trend. And now for thee, dear HAG. eS 3 We lay our highest tribute on thy chest. Jacob Williams In the fall of 1939 a group of one hundred and twenty- eight Freshmen entered F.C.1.S. to commence a long journey toward graduation. This was the largest group to be enrolled in a Freshman class at F.C.1.S.e. The class was divided into two divisions. Miss Hill was made sponsor of the A divi- sion, and Mr. Holden was made sponsor of the B division. The A'' division elected Thaddeus Hayes as president, and the B division elected Clarence Evans, The outstanding event of the Freshman year was the Freshman Declamatory Contest. Each division was represented by three speakers and the winner was Dorothy Ellis who left the class in the Junior year to reside in New York state. The class was also proud of the fact that it won first prize in the annual Big Broadcast of that years At commencement perfect attendance certificates wore reccived by Harold Green and Lottie Wright. Bernice Johnson and Emma Johnson, who were attending Mebane High School at that timc, also received perfect attendance certificates. Sixty-six of the one hundred and twenty-cight returned bo F.C.T.S. to begin the second mile of their journey through ¥.C.1.S.e Mrs. Strickland and Jacob Williams were elected pre- sidents of their respective divisions. The class gained a great deal of recognition im athletics in that the Sophomore class had more representatives in this activity than any other class in the school. Mozella Thomas and Louise Harris joined the Public Speaking Club.Harold Green represonted the class on tho Student Council and Jacob Williams became a manber of the staff of the Franklin Reporter. Though no records were broken during the Sophomore year, that yoar gave to the class the wisdom necded for entrance into a Junior year at F.0.1.S.. Mrs. Strickland was elected president of the class. The outstanding activities of the Junior year were: ( continued on the following page ) The three act comedy, Sunbonnet Jane Of Sycamore Lane 3 and the Junior Scnior Banquet. Mombers of the class were well represented in all extra-curricular activitios. At the ond of the Junior year the class lost one of its sponsors, Mr. G,V. Holden, to the armed forces. Tt is sad to state that the class ontored the Senior year minus the dignity that the instructors had tried to instill within its memborse Bhore was not tho usual gaicty at sceing old friends as so many wore trying to work conditions off. For cxtra-activitics the class rushed to the Frenklin Repor= ter, This being truc, it is sefo to say that the success of that paper this yoar is due to the members of the Senior class. Clarence Evans was clected president of the class and also president of the Student Council, Jacob Williams served his second year as editor of the Franklin Reporter. Herold Groen achieved the all time perfect attendence record of the class: for five years he has been neither absent or tardy. The main events of the year were: The Big Broadcast; the Senior play, Dying To Live ; The Junior Senior Picnic; ond of course Commencomente The class dectided to leave the school a number of small gifts instead of giving one big gift. Some of these gifts were: painting the Senior class room; a large United States flag for tho flag pole; and a cataloguo file for the Library. Now that the class has reached its journey’s end, it can look back over the four long yoars it has coverod with pride. While the class makes no claim to unusual greatness, it fecls that it has played its part at F.C.T.S.. And, in the future when othors wish to judge the merits of the class of 43, judge it by its motto -- Let Us Be Judged By Our Deeds . Justine Foster, Class Historian OR THIS SENIOR Clarence i. Press Club '= Josephine Bryant, Robert Macon, Jessie Yarborough, Samuel Hazelwood, Other menbors of our class showed interest in soft pall, cro- quet, boxing and other sportse Yet, extra-curricular activities were not the only things in which the membors of our class wore interested. James Macon, Robert Macon, Eleanor Murphy, James Moore and Christine nvans excelled in scholarship. We also have the honor of having Miss Franklin County training School (Eleanor Murphy) as one of our memberse We end our school year with thirty-eight members, It is our hope that all of the thirty-eicht will always be guided by our motto: To Strive, To Seck, To Find, But, Not To Yieldy Cless Historien - Eleanor Murphy BY DIVISION On the fifth of September nineteen forty-two Nine and thirty girls and boys started anew. As leaders of the class we chose Hazel Grace Thomas, president; Katie Bernice Leake, vice presidenty Mary Le Green, secretary; William P. Neal, treasurer; and Aileen Macon, re- porter. During the scrap iron drive the class worked hard to get in all of the scrap that could be found. We turned in ov- er two thousand pounds of scrap, with Walter T.Branch turning in the greatest amount individually. Katie Bernice Leake won second place in the contest spon- sored for Miss F.C.1.S., and crowned the winner, We also won a prize for our contribution to the Library drive. Our aim was always to do our bost in those things in which we took a parte Four of us, Mary L. Green, Hazcl Thomas, Dorothy Perry and Ruby Lois King, sang the Marine Hymn on the Senior Big Broadcast. Qn tho fifth of February Florence Green, Dorothy Perry, Aileen Macon, and Katie B. Lecke appeared on our chapel pro gram, ' Why We Celebrate Our Holidays . Our sympathy went to Josephine Solomon who lost her mo- ther in Januarye Some of us didn't study as we should have, consequently, our grades were not as they should havo been.
