On September 8, 1949, approximately 106 green fresh- men entered the halls ofFranklin High School,eager, but with a feeling of inferiority to the many upperclassmen. Since,out of this number, 16 were graduates of Needham Grade School and about 8 more were from Hopewell, there were many new and unfamiliar faces among us. As a result, the next two or three weeks were spent in making new friends and acquaint- ances, many of whom would share our joys and troubles during the next four years. As time passed on, we freshmen started to emerge from , our shells and began to take our places, however small, in the whirl of school activities. Perhaps the highlight of the year was the annual Grizzly Club Dance held in honor of the F-men of the school. A week before the big affair, many white shirts were laundered and pressed as were the only suits. The girls, too, were spending anxious moments getting their formals ready for the big night. What a wonderful time we had! As we look back through the last four years, one of the sweetest memories if our first Grizzly Cub. We are grateful to the school for allowing such a fine tradition to be carried on. The remaining weeks of school passed uneventfully, and almost before we knew it, another senior class had been promoted from green freshmen to sophisticated or Silly sophomores. As we accepted this position of F. H.'S. , we were beginning to realize that we had a very definite place in our school. School passed on much as it had 'the year before, with one notable exception. We became acquainted with .our new class sponsors, Miss Stephan, Miss Couch, and Mr. Smith. Our sponsors the year before had been Mr. Vandivier,'Miss Van Lien, and Mr. Van Cleave. Our sponsors have been very helpful and understanding in all our problems. Their ready help and advice have been ours for the askingg and for this, we cannot be too grateful and appreciative, As the year continued many of the members of our class had begun making themselves prominent places in school life. Many were taking over duties of class officers and officers in the various clubs. Some were excell- ing in the classroom, while others were starring on the sports field. By this time most of our crushes on upperclassmen had been forgotten: and, as we began to learn the cor- rect methods of dating, the time-honored battle of the sexes was on. Then suddenly the year wasover andone of our most important years was beginning. We were juniors! Our junior year was an exciting one right from the start. This was the first year that we really began to take an active part in the major organizations at Franklin High. Soon after school started Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y tapped many of our class members,and, after a day or two of informal initiation, formally initiated us in inspiring cere- monies. Much of our time has been spent making these organizations successesg and we are extremely grateful to F. H. S. for the privilege of participating in them. From the start of our junior year, the big thing in all our minds was THE PROM!! For our theme we chose Evening in Paris g and immediately began working., We knew that during the next few months, the eyes of the

whole school would be on us, and we wanted to present the seniors with one of the best Proms ever. Many of us donned a new formal, dinner-jacket, or for the first time, and for all of us our Junior Prom is ahappy mem- ory we shall never forget. Altogether too soon, our senior year arrived and many of us began realizing for the first time just what these last four years had meant to us. We have, in our owr1 way, tried to till a place among the other graduating class- es before us, and sincerely hope that we have been able to do so. In spite of the worry and concern we have caus- ed our superiors through these years, we hope that they know that they have our deepest respect and sincerest ap- preciation for the guidance and knowledge they have passed on to us. ' During our four years of hardship and happiness, we have made many friends among ourselves and, we hope, among the faculty and members of other classes. Some of these friends we shall never see again: others will be near LB all our lives, sharing the same problems and happiness that they have shared with us in high school. Years from now as we look through the pages of this, our senior class annual, may we all be reminded of our four won- derful years at Franklin High School. SECOND GRADE
