Gretta Walters and Jackie Funke do their thing. Celebrations, Friends, Buddies Involved in a myriad of activities, the women of Delta Zeta are active in both school and community activities. The DZ ' s collected a food basket and money for a needy family at Thanksgiving and also participated in the muscu- lar dystrophy drive. The chapter, along with the faculty, sponsored a wet-sponge-throw booth at Homecoming. They also participated in Flame Fantasy. The pledge class initiated the Turtle-of-the-Week with a huge stuffed turtle given to them by the CCD. Among their activities on cam- pus, the DZ ' s participated in yearbook, newspaper, cam- pus radio, cheerleading, RAB, Gold Quill, Laurels, Dramat- ic productions, Spanish Club, Choir, WRA varsity sports, SEA, PEM Club, Crescents, Little Sisters of Minerva, and Sisters of the Sword. Greeks 45 LAMBDA CHI ALPHA Early in September, Lambda Chi Alpha hosted the annual Watermelon Bust. Students participated in games and ate watermelon. Directed by Brother Mark Murray, the Christmas party for the underprivileged children of Franklin was highlight- ed by the appearance of Santa Claus and the distribution of gifts collected by fraternity members. Raids on Elsey Hall in the fall found Lambda Chi ' s com- ing back with four doors. A fee of $10 was charged to each sorority to get their door back. The money collected was donated to the Gateway Learning Center. Continuing a tradition of past years, the active chapter combined forces to humiliate the pledges in the pledge-ac- tive football game by a score of 55-0. Football and basketball dominated the intramural pro- gram during the fall and winter months. Both sports were dominated by two teams, the SAE ' s and Blood, the Black Student Union team. The S.A.E. ' s captured the A league basketball crown and was second in football while Blood captured the football championship and was runner-up in basketball. The league had so many teams enter the foot- ball and basketball competition that it had to be divided into three sections, compared to last year ' s two. Coach Faught also was named to the NAIA Hall of Fame. Paced by Ail-American honorable mention Phil Powell and ten other seniors, the Grizzlies won eight consecutive contests including a close Homecoming triumph over Tay- lor after losing to an undefeated Ashland team in the sea- son ' s opener. In the Division II Semi-final playoff game, the Grizzlies met an undefeated team from Northwestern (Iowa) and were beaten in a close contest, 13-6. Not pictured— Dan Stamm. 92 Cross Country Grizzly Harriers Garner 7-5 Record Led by Freshman Dave Droddy of Jeffersonville, the 1972 Cross Country team recorded the school ' s second winning season in its history. Coach Marquis ' harriers finished with a 7-5 marl which is second only to the 1965 team ' s 7-4 season. The best time over the five-mile course was a 25:43 made by Dave Droddy in the Big Little State Finals meet. That run earned Droddy an individual fifth place out of 18 schools in participation. The team finished third in the NAIA District 21 meet and eighth in the Earlham Relays. The exclusively underclassmen team will be return- ing in its entirety next year. The 1972-73 edition of Grizzly basketeers, under Coach Ed Thompson earned the distinction of being the number one independent team in the state of Indiana. The Grizzlies finished with a 14-1 1 record bowing out in the championship game of the N.A.I.A. District 21 Finals to Hanover. The team also won runner-up honors in the 1972 Red Cedar Classic Tourney held at the University of Wiscon- sin—Stout. FC was defeated in the title contest by the host school 66-63, but Senior Dan Fell was named the MVP of the tourney. The team will lose three players, Dan Fell, Clovis Stinson, and Mike Holcomb, via gradu- ation. The Junior Varsity record was 7-4. Janes finished with a 22-1-0 record. The NAIA District 21 championship, the Franklin tourney channpionship, a 29-2-1 record and four indi- vidual berths to the NAIA wrestling finals were the fruits of success enjoyed by the 1972-73 Grizzly wrestling team. Coached by Harold Butch Lawson and Assistant Jim Graham the team also won the Little State tourney title and was runner-up in the Indiana Central tourney. Franklin which placed all of its men in the final matches of the District championship meet had four champs in Arnie Brown, (126 lb.), Mike Heppner (177 lb.), Kevin Kane (190 lb.), and Larry Janes (Heavyweight). Improvement is a key word in describing the 1973 baseball season. After a slow 2-6 start the team won nine of the 17 games remaining on the schedule. The team managed to accomplish this feat despite the many can- cellations caused by weather conditions. Coach Clark Dickerson ' s Grizzly nine played some of the top competition in the nation as the team took a five- game tour in the southern states during spring break. Tri-captains for the 1973 season were Phil Powell, Dave Hutton, and Jeff Brown. Studying the situation, Coach Clark Dickerson led his charges to 11-14 record.
