M, A-- I In the midst of all things verdant your life has just begun. You are a freshman and you h ave come to college to learn . . . to learn about others and about yourself. You are fresh and naive, eager to live life for its very essence, to live deliberately, yet freely. What a grand experiment you h ave stepped into. Franklin is faces . . . pensive, doubtful, hopeful, laughing, crying, exuberant, joy- ful, droll, lively faces. Franklin is minds . . . anxious, extraordinary, ques- tioning, gifted, participating minds. And Franklin is emotions, and sensations and in-depth conversations. FRANKLIN IS LIFE . . . pulsating life, and you are the blood of its veins. Come dine with us and taste this slice of well-earned life, it's yours! Opening 5 X lt's hard to believe that a year has already gone by. The frustrations of L.S. I and ll are past, but do not look so optimistically into the futureg you are only halfway through the L.S. pro- gram. Before you lies Great Books and World Civilization: but one year's experience is already behind you. Enjoy your sophomore year. lt is work, but it is the type of work that increases your thirst for knowledge. It is excite- ment with apprehension about what to expect for the next two years. Laugh- ter and hope interwoven with apprehen- sion and tension, that is the sophomore's life. l if .... ...a.-.--,---,-...-.-WM.-- .,,,. ..u. . ..,.t. M ...,. to ........ ..., t ,. l .l i . --ll ! . You look back upon three years of school and what a good time it has been: you look forward and see only questions. This idyllic romance with knowledgep this encapsuled microcosm of lifep this thing they call college is nearly ended . . . and that is sad. lt is the end of intrinsic life and the beginning of who-knows- what. The simple sheltered life of college 10 Opening will soon give way to the noise and con- fusion of the rat race . Senior, you have new freedoms: voting and drinking. You have new responsibilities too, since society is placing the world in your hands to handle as you will. You have reason to be sad: you are leaving behind you the best carefree years of your life, Nlold the world wellp please, it's the only one we have. mr ig. 1. I r ui... The 1970 Grizzly Football team displayed these qualities this fall, ending regular season play with a highly impress- ive record of six wins and three losses, plus a bid to play in a post season bowl game. According to Big Bed, the 1970 squad is the finest team he has coached in his fourteen years at Franklin Col- lege. One of the most important aspects of Big Bed's Machine is the abundance of talented personnel throughout the squad. Generally, a winning football team is comprised of mostly seniors, however, the Grizzly squad is sprinkled with seniors as well as outstanding juniors, sophomores and freshmen. The Franklin College Grizzlies paraded into the peaceful ham- let late Friday afternoon, November 27th, casually lounging around, digesting the nutritious Thanksgiving dinner they had shared the day before. Night fell, the Grizzlies slept, then a healthy, lVlid-West- ern rooster signaled the dawn of November 28th: the day the Grizzlies were to destroy the Wildcats of Wayne State, Nebraska. As the day progressed, so did the Grizzlies, and by dusk, the Grizzlies had out-scored, out-classed, a n d out- hustled the Wildcats in a momentous Mineral Water Bowl victory, 40-12 la new bowl scoring recordl. lVlany of the Griz- zlies performed extremely well, and in addition to those individuals who re- ceived trophies for exceptional play lBlair Jackson, Phil Powell, and Phil Hellerl. Coach Stewart Red Faught feels that the entire squad must be praised. The whole team is great . . . l love 'em all, said Faught, with sparkling eyes. Winning the lVlineral Water Bowl was the culmina- tion of a spectacular, record-shattering football year for the Grizzlies. All the blood, the sweat, the tears, and the bruises of the season seemed to pay off. So now the glimmering victory trophy takes its repose in the Campus Center. Defending golf champs refain their crown The Franklin golf team finished the 1970 season with a respectable regular season record of 10-2. Defeating a competitive Butler squad and then moving on to defeat Hanover, the Grizzlies climbed to a conference championship. The highlight of the season saw the Grizzly golfers coming back 17 shots in the final round with a 72 stroke average to defend their District 2l title. The Grizzly sextet also earned another trip to play for the national title in Liberty, lVlissouri. At the close of competition, Chuck Deedman and Evan Williams were named on the All- Conference team, while the All-District selections were Deedman and Dave Over- meyer. We have attempted in l i these pages to tell a story-life at Franklin College, a l life interwoven with faces, new and old. The theme i l is not original, nor is it meant to beg life is not new l i and original, merely novel, to be experienced for Ill those who are unafraid to taste the fruits of life. If T have conveyed in these few pages. The seniors deserve special notice in this dedication, for it is up to them l to continue in this life, but within a different frame- l work, beyond the cloistered walls of the college and into the world of questions.
