Penny Stallings tries on a graduation cap while Mr. Corbin and his helpers stand by. Leona Aldrich puts on Ken Henson's makeup for the Senior Class Play. Sherri Reid, a senior mem- ber of the Teen Thirty cast, waits for her cue. The nurse willingly cares fo r sick students, here Knox Herndon has his tem- perature taken. mm 6444 It is the evening of the graduation ceremonies. The seniors, blue-robed and solemn, have just received their diplomas and listened to Mr. Moore's com- mendation of their work during the past year. There is a moment of silence. A far-away dreamy look has crept into their eyes. Of what are they thinking? Each has realized that he is about to begin the fourth and most important chapter of his life. Behind him stretches the setting for the story. Ahead lies a vast white sheet upon which the critical events before the climax will be recorded. Those early events that have laid the basis for the future pass before him for reconsideration. Toward the end appear those impressions left by the past year, a year of leadership, with its rewards and headaches. Old friends gathered on the first day to compare vacations, homeroom assignments, and speculations about the rumored difficulty of Senior English. As the week progressed, schedules were straightened out and the old routine was established once more. But the new Seniors walked with a bouncier step and a greater assurance than ever before, but they also were beginning to realize that their privileges entailed greater maturity, independence, and initiative. The first responsibility was the government of the school, which meant distributing copies of the constitution, organizing the voting, running for office, and the most difficult part, seeing to it that the constitution lived up to the confidence placed in it by the student body. The next picture for many is Miss Rowe's office with its many books and much good advice about the struggle for college entrance. Decisions were made, applications sent for and filled out, CEEB tests taken, and then the waiting began. Acceptances straggled in one by one, and grew thicker as April approached. Meanwhile, inspite of the increased load of homework, Shakespeare, book lists, and term papers, Senior class elections were held. Cries of Back Ptak and l'm for Jim cumulated in a spontaneous campaign rally for Dave, during which he reluctantly said a few words, an election with a rush of write-ins, controversy over the legality of them, a Senior class meeting, and the decision to form a coalition government. The excitement over this had hardly died down when try-outs for the Late Christopher Bean were announced. Soon after, rehearsals began, and actors and actresses floated through their classes in a daze until the final rehearsal. The four performances were a successful climax to the build up of tens ion. The scene shifts once more as the auditorium comes into view. But now it is in semi-darkness and Bob Crandall is announcing the second coalition, two sets of Little Abner's and Daisy lVlae's! The second semester brings to mind astage with six presidential candidates finding fault with the government and trying to persuade their classmates to elect them. The sale of Beer Mugs with names of the students was announced and everyone started dreaming up thirty-one DM's for this precious item. About this time, too, the previously ordered rings arrived, and a controversy over announce- ments was settled. Spring vacation, the class trip to Paris, and a lovely Prom convinced the Seniors that the year was drawing to a close. The Senior banquet was instituted as the final contribution for posterity and finally the long- awaited day arrived. Graduation! The attention of three hundred Seniors snaps back to the speaker. He is reminding them that they are now adults and the future, with its many responsibilities, awaits them to test their preparation.
