Unlike other less-taxing sports, the wrestler must use his energy to capacity during the entire match. Thus, practices are tough, but the boys don't seem to mind, knowing that it's all for the good and glory of the brand new wrestling team of F.H.S. Phil Steele perpares to counter a switch by Dodd of Wiesbaden at a match held in the F,H.S. auditorium Ctop leftj. F,H,S, wrestlers practice their holds until they are perfected, as is the case with Adrian Banker as he applies a cradle to Dave Barton in an inter-squad match ftop rightp. On lockers watch with unwavering interest fsecond rightl as Ralph Cory tries a snapdown on Shook of Wiesbaden at the Frankfurt- Wiesbaden match. The abundance of boys out for the sport increased the competitive spirit among themselves and neces- sitated wrestle-offs like that between Phil Steele and Dave Berrera fthird rightj to decide which would go to the K-town and participate in the USAREUR tournament. Practice matches provided the necessary experience as teammates like Ralph Cory and Bill Edler fbottom rightj practice a body-press. It took hard work during those long after-school practice sessions for Phil Steele to develope the ability to force aguillotine on Dodd, of Wiesbaden fbottom lefty. 175

174 Coach David Nelson 74a Wdmfle Saglea Under the auspicious leadership of Mr. Nelson, Frankfurt's first ye ar of wrestling started. The Nimble E agles started the ye ar with some of the toughest conditioning exercises known. Runs through the park, wind sprints through the halls and three to four minute laps around the school, up and down the stairs were common after school sights. As the season officially started, the squad beganto feel they were in good shape physically. Then two MP's showed up at the invitation of Coach Nelson. The results of that encounter with only two men con- vinced the squad that even more rigorous training was needed. During the season, squad members were chosen to compete with other schools on the basis of wrestle-offs before each match. Those who demonstrated the most improvement represented Frankfurt at the matches. At the finals held in Kaiserslautern, Frankfurt placed sixth out of a field of fifteen contestants. An assembly was scheduled to acquaint students with the basic principles of wrestling, to stimulate student interest and to obtain their support. In a wrestle-off for first position in the 120 pound weight class, Rick Cordes pits his strength and 176 prowess against Allen Kellem Qthird leftj. During the exciting Frankfurt-Mannheim match Cloottom leftj. Jerry Trayham of F.H.S. attempts to use a headlock to advantage on Ansel of Mannheim. The match held at Frankfurt, was one of the most spirited of the season, with avid fans from both schools attending in substantial numbers.
