Band, while expertly twirling their batons. The girls work out various marching routines and pranoe in step to the lilting strains of music. During football season, the maj orettes developed several lively routines which were performed during halftime and played an important part in boosting spirit. The band and majorettes were sometimes combined with the drill team. This definitely proved to be a winning combination. During the festive Fasching season, the majorettes did their part to promote German American friendship by marching in several parades. The girls also helped the F.H.S. band to win second place in competition at Russelsheim, and nearly froze to death in the process fbottom lefty. As a climax to their marching year, the majorettes gave a special program at halftime during the basketball tournaments. 161

160 K3 3 ww ' ,,2,L. All Uzaieoha Mr. Ried, the instrumental music teacher has been attempting to convince students and USAREUR officials that an orchestra is a necessary addition to the musical life of the school. Last year his hopes were partially realized when he was able to initiate the String Quartet. This year, that group expanded into a full orchestra of approximately twenty-five members. This group has no assigned daily periods, except two activity periods, so members were obliged to practice on their own time. The all-important string section is the weakest part of the group because the six violins, cellist, Violist, and bass Violist have had little training. Shown here ftopj are Conrad Field, bass violistg Jane Kadlec, Qbackj second violing Marsha Taft, first violing Trudy Barret, frightj cellog and Mr. Ried, who is helping out. The other sections of the group were gleaned from the band. Lois Kauffman Qsecond lefty does double duty playing both the flute and picollo.
