The final day of the school year is greeted with mixed emotions. Though anticipation of lazy summer days is exciting, these last moments are somewhat sad as students cast glances at friends not to be seen again until fall. Everyone is looking forward to a break in the work load and an end to the strains of the school routine. Sleeping in and spending a day at the pool are plans shared by teachers as well as students. But as the vacation goes on students find themselves ready to return to school. After being home for two months, boredom strikes the students while parents begin to wish there was no such thing as a summer vacation. So as we anxiously await the end of the school year we also wish it would never end. Those of us who have made new friends, made new memories, and reached new goals were proud of our ac- complishments. Surely, the last days of school are full of mixed emotions. News ’81-'82 THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE. — Anwar Sadat was assassinated. — England fought for protection of the Falkland Islands. — Lady Diana and Prince Charles were wed and they have had their first child. — There was a second attempt made on the life of Pope John Paul Il. — Israel withdrew from the Sinai. — The Polish Union fought the government for more rights. — Fatal hunger strikes took place in Ireland. — The World’s Fair opened in Tennessee THE NATIONAL SCENE. — The first woman was appointed to the United States Supreme Court. — A737 crashed in the Potomac River at Washington D.C. killing sixty-three people. — The price of a stamp went up to twenty cents. — People protested against Nuclear War. (Ground Zero Week). — The Space Shuttle Columbia made its third consecutive flight. — Unemployment was at fifteen percent. — The price of gas dropped below one dollar in some areas of the U.S. — People slipped their way through a terrible winter. — John McEnroe won Wimbledon. — The San Francisco Forty-Niners won the Super Bowl. — The Philadelphia Phillies won the World Series. — West Virginia University won the Peach Bowl and the Mountaineer basketball team made it into the Top Ten. ENTERTAINMENT. — John Belushi died of a drug overdose. — Liz Taylor got her seventh divorce. — Bo Derek was out and Brooke Shields was in. — Tom Selleck was the new sex symbol. (Right Ms. Wilson?) — Luke and Laura got married on General Hospital. — Chariots of Fire won the Oscar for Best Picture. Other favorites were On Golden Pond, Raiders of the Lost Arc, Porky’s, and Rocky Il. — Endless Love was the Song of the Year while Back In Black, Lady (You Bring Me Up), Get Down On It, and | Love Rock and Roll were also listened to a lot. — Music and rock groups went from the Doobie Brothers to AC DC. The Commodores, Journey, and Foreigner were other good groups. — It was the Year of the Handicapped Person, Atari, PacMan Fever, unemployment, and the Rubik's Cube. It was 1981-1982.
