PRY, RAN SW Ea oS FEV Te welt ob Dy. MUD Ur, era Pride is interpreted by some to mean conceit. To Frankfort students, however, pride is the self-respect that allows us to settle for nothing less than the best from ourselves. Taking pride in our team, despite a 6-4 season, players refused to show disappointment, and, instead, tried only harder to succeed. Pride to band members meant precision and har- mony which was recognized with first place honors in parade and field show competitions. Outside of school, students exhibited community pride by contributing services to local organizations. Fire companies in Ridgeley, Wiley Ford, Short Gap, and Fort Ashby involved students. Through church youth groups, many found themselves working to bet- ter their community. Keeping their cars waxed to a mirror shine exhibited the pride of some individuals. Vocational students took pride in their skills while academic students took pride in their grade point averages. Many displayed this trait by achieving awards or goals in per- sonal recreation or by just being the best friend they could be. Pride was exhibited in the appearance of Frankfort students as they walked around with their chins tipped slightly higher than the average person's. Shawn Barncord and Dave Shriver add spirit to pep rallies. The 3:20 bell sends an elated group of students to their lockers. Trying to remember what homework to do, we hurriedly search for books, and with a final slam of locker doors, we put the school day behind us. With pride in our achievements, some of us scurried off to after-school practices, trudging down the field or hustling around the court for several hours. Others raced home to fill their time with chores, work, dance, sports , hobbies, or study. On rare occasions we found time to watch the tube or just plain relax. It was our time, and no matter what we did, we enjoyed it! We Are Family. The gang gathers at the milk table for a group shot. Taking pride in our appearance, a neater, dressier look marked the students at Frankfort this year. The ‘‘preppie’’ look called for a return to classic fashions: blazers and wool-plaid skirts; sweaters and button-down collared shirts; knee socks and flat-soled shoes. For students who would rather ‘‘save an alligator by killing a preppie,’’ fashionable meant designer labeled jeans and Nike shoes. Others searched the pages of ‘‘Gentleman’s Quarterly” and “Seventeen” seeking the unusual. Knickers, baggies, and narrow ties decorated these innovative students. When not involved in school, we were rarely at a loss for activities to fill our time. FIVE TO NINE. «. Inflation is everywhere. The money crunch has even hit the students here at Frankfort High School. The value of the dollar is going down and the prices of what it will buy are going up. Money for gas, movies, and nights on the town seems hard to come up with. Working after school and on weekends seems to be the only solution, while others work just to occupy their time. “Working gives me money to spend on going out and having fun’’, says Bill Shoenadel. Kelly Bratt said, ‘Il started working to get out of go- ing to school for a full day”, but her reason later changed to a more common one: economic necessity! ok, tat We thera dees Me ALL RLABOO nPont coer RR Vonda and Scott's Discount Drug Sales — Drug Fair. Still Involved With School. Many of us spent our extra time in school related activities. Friday night football games, Tuesday night basketball games, and Monday night wres- tling matches were as much fun to participate in as they were to watch. Band members were busy eleven weeks in a row going to competitions and various performances. But participation included hours of practice to at- a_ ger we tain the perfection each of us strived for. After school was an ideal time for three or four hours of practice. The seniors found time for ‘‘last minute” touch-ups only an hour before the performance of the senior class play. But whatever we participated or competed in, we were proud to represent Frankfort High School. 17 ay _— hie ! Chery! Hahn, Scott Turley and the rest of the gang like to talk after eating. Pride in tha enjoying their lunch. Lisa Flanagan and Cindy Chaney show their homecom- ing spirit. Timmy Moreland, Jeff Welker and Brenda Wolfe like to talk between classes. People are the center of all things. Whether young or old it is people who make the world go around. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, and business men all have their place in society. America’s youth is equally important. The future is in our hands. At home and here at school we learn and shape ourselves and our personalities for our future endeavors. All types of people make up the student body here at Frankfort. The brains, the browns, the jocks, and the prissies are only a few. But whoever we are, we're proud to make up the foundation of our school. We Are Seniors... Nineteen Eighty-two! The year that we thought would never arrive, the year we could not wait for. We started our Senior year with a lot of anticipation, keeping one thought in the back of our minds, ‘‘Only nine more months to go.” We were surprised to find how quickly those nine months did go. Sitting at the far right of the gymnasium, center of the auditorium and going to lunch five minutes earlier, were privileges that made us the ‘‘Big Guys on Campus.” For some of us 1982 and our Senior year brought many Glenn M. Alt “Glenn” Tina M. Aguallo “Tina” pases it ae 5 Shawn P. Barncord “Barney” Michael S. Barnes “Shawn” 20 memories. Our last football game, basketball game, halftime performance and prom, gave way to a sort of melancholy feeling. Before we knew it, the Caps and Gowns we ordered in Oc- tober were on us in May. After graduation and the parties, we were all faced with the same question, ‘‘Where do we go from here?”’ College, jobs, and taking it easy for a year, were some of the answers. But whatever we decided, we'll always remember the friends and memories we made at Frankfort High School. Fr a 7 Sherri R. Anderson “Sherri” Edward W. Ashenfelter “Eddie” Robert B. His hometown is San Antonio de Belen, Costa Rica, which is a small industrialized town about one-half the size of Cumberland, Md. There he lives with his mother, Aracelly, and his father, Edwardo, who works as a market manager. Claudio has two sisters, Gabriela, 14, and Milagro, 13, and one brother, Eduin, who is 16 years old. During his stay in the U.S., Claudio’s host family is the Robert Cooper family, who live in Fort Ashby, WV. Claudio enjoys playing all sports except football, which is not played in his home country. He especially likes basketball, as he played on his high school team in Costa Rica. Claudio also took part this year in intramural basketball here at Frankfort as a member of the “War Pigs.”’ Claudio decided he would like to come to the United States as a part of the A.F.S. program to gain a better understanding of the English language and to learn more about American culture. He will very much miss the many new friends he has made during his experience in the United States. Juniors... One step from the top, the class of '83 are geared up for the year ahead. Getting home from practice after six didn’t allow much time to eat and do all of the homework the teachers expected us to do. The following statistics, along with his great attitude, determination and team leader- ship, were impressive enough to earn Barry the state honor. He gained 1307 yards, scored 117 points, kicked 3 field goals, and 19 extra points! Barry’s football career began when he was a pee-wee player for the Ridgeley Mini-Hawks. As a Ridgeley Ram he was the leader in rushing and scoring in the Cumberland Area Youth Football League. The William Bruce Memorial Award for the outstanding player in the league was presented to him when he completed his career as a Ram. His outstanding high school career began as a Freshman at Frankfort when he started as both a defensive and an offen- sive player. Honors during his four years as a Falcon include the following: All-Area second team in his sophomore year; Special Mention All-State, All Potomac Valley Conference team, and All-Area team in his junior year and in his senior year along with the All-State honor came All-Potomac Valley Conference team and All-Area team. The team started the season by winning two in a row before being halted by the number one team in the area, Fort Hill. The Falcons entertaining their own annual Christmas Tournament were stopped again in the first round by University High. They won the consolation game over George Mason to obtain third place. Starting their win- ning ways again the Falcons won three in a row before losing two in a row to Keyser and Moorefield. Now half way through their season, the Falcons went on a tear by winning seven in a row, one against Keyser, this was the first time they had beaten the Golden Tornado since 1979. Rated number four in the area, Frankfort faced number one rated Fort Hill and again were edged 56-53. The team then traveled to Moorefield and avenged an earlier loss by crushing the Yellow Jackets. The Falcons ended their regular season by losing two in a row to Hampshire and Jefferson. In the Sectional tournament the Falcons were upset by Petersburg in overtime 70- 66. Throughout the summer, these girls spent many hours in the hot sun preparing for a very full year ahead. Along with the practices at school, they also attended a cheerleading camp held at West Virginia Wesleyan College. At this camp the girls spent four days and four nights learning new chants and cheers to help promote the spirit at Frankfort High School. The cheerleaders were awarded two 2nd and 3rd place awards in competitions held nightly. Even though there were pulled muscles and shin splints, they were very proud of their achievements. After what seemed like a very short summer, it was back to school to show the other squads and the student body what they had learned. This task was accomplished slowly but surely starting with ‘“Meet the Squad” night. Between cheering the Football team on to a winning season, and doing the same for the Basketball team, they had a very busy schedule. While the area was busy watching Frankfort football and basketball the band was slowly mak- ing its way into the spotlight. The 1981-82 season brought a lasting reputation to the band. The ‘‘Nobody does it better’’ cliche came true for all of the band members. With the help of Steve Taylor, Rodney Powers, and Lorainne Eckard of the FHS band caught the “Mountaineer Spirit. ‘Your Mama” and the ‘Pride of Frankfort High School”’ were two sayings that were not easily forgotten. _ Hours were spent practicing after school and at band camp but none of the members put in more time than their director, DuWane Sandlin. He thought that writing the drills was difficult! Drilling them into the kids’ heads was the real task. The band would not be where it is today if it weren't for his dedication to the band program. Mr. Sandlin, the pride of the band members, the Band Booster Organization, and the support of the area all add up to one thing: Our band is number one! ‘‘And that's a fact Jack!” DRUM MAJORS. Conducting the band this year were Junior Drum Major Sonya Twigg and Senior Drum Major David Rector. Each year a junior is selected in order to gain the experience they will need for their senior year. Dave and Sonya did an outstanding job this year. FEATURE TWIRLER. This was Michele's fourth year as feature twirler for the marching band. She has been a twirling stu- dent of Denise Walker for seven years. James Manchin, West Virginia Secretary of State. As the ceremony proceeded, many of the seniors began to realize what graduation signified. It was the end of twelve years of growing, of making friends and memories. Even though some days went slower than others we stuck it out. Now we realize that the past four years have been the best years of our lives. Commencement also meant the beginning. College, work, and the long-awaited independence were in front of us. Approaching Summer With Mixed Emotions June 10. The final day of the school year is greeted with mixed emotions. Though anticipation of lazy summer days is exciting, these last moments are somewhat sad as students cast glances at friends not to be seen again until fall. Everyone is looking forward to a break in the work load and an end to the strains of the school routine. Sleeping in and spending a day at the pool are plans shared by teachers as well as students. But as the vacation goes on students find themselves ready to return to school. After being home for two months, boredom strikes the students while parents begin to wish there was no such thing as a summer vacation. So as we anxiously await the end of the school year we also wish it would never end. Those of us who have made new friends, made new memories, and reached new goals were proud of our ac- complishments. Surely, the last days of school are full of mixed emotions. This year a theme for the yearbook was brought into ex- istence. ‘‘Pride’’ is the basic idea seen throughout the book. There is also more copy than there has been in previous years. So when there is success there are people who deserve credit. Mrs. Ellen Arnone, journalism and yearbook advisor at Beall High School, and Ms. Denise Walker, journalism advisor at Bruce High School gave helpful hints and different ideas which contributed to the new image of the book. A special thanks is extended to them for their time and creativity. Thanks also goes to our advisor, Mrs. Brakeall who allowed and helped us to put these ideas into use. Ruhl Studios and John Smith should also be commended for their photography. Although it was difficult adapting changes and adding new ideas, the experience has been challenging as well as en- joyable. As you close this book on the 1982 school year, | hope you have found the material as entertaining as | have had in helping to produce it. It’s something to be proud of.
