Melanie was a member of the National Honor Society and the girls’ basketball team. She served as business man- ager of the 1977 Talon staff, selling more boosters and ad- vertisements than any other staff member. Her physical beauty was not only matched but exceeded by the elegance she had in her heart when it came to compassion. Melanie made it known to her parents that she wanted her kidneys donated to someone who needed them. This wish was fulfilled upon her death. She is gone, but her unselfish love and deeds will live forever. Frankfort High Dedication On August 26, 1976, a dream came true for those who had worked and given their time for Frankfort High School. Bernard Douthitt, member of the board of education, opened the dedica- tion ceremonies, followed by fellow board member Marion Phillips who presented the school key to Dr. Charles Coffman, principal. He stated that he hoped that the “spirit that helped build the stadium will project throughout our school pro- gram.” J. R. Haines, director of pupil serv- ices, Melvin M. Heiskell, and J. W. Mark- er, former principals, also spoke that night. The ceremony was followed by tours of the school and a Fun Fair sponsored by the Frankfort High School Booster Club. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE The school system of Mineral County is meeting the needs and wishes of the citizens of the Frankfort District in the beautiful, new, consolidated Frankfort High School at Short Gap, West Virginia. To you, the students, we the educators pledge not only to give you the most profitable education possible, but to also prepare you to become the kind of citizens that will make this “ol” world a better place to live. Today, we all face many serious problems. The school shall seek to give you every opportunity to prepare yourselves for living victoriously — whatever the task of tomorrow. I sincerely believe the Frankfort spirit — the spirit of love and cooperation — will bring honor to you, the students, and reflect credit on our high school. Toward that goal we are striving; to that end we are dedicated. Dr. Charles L. Coffman ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE As assistant principal, I urge each of you to make the most of your time spent at Frankfort High School. Many of the briefest moments at Frankfort will prove to be some of the fondest memories of your adult life. As students, you are fortunate in helping to develop the fighting “Falcon Spirit.” This spirit will also become an integral part of your life. Spirit will keep you trying when you want to give up. Spirit will give you strength when you feel tired, and spirit will give you hope when you are losing. Remember that your high school education is not an end, but only another step forward toward a brighter new tomorrow. Donald H. Knotts e 2m Uy Ot ONO T t= a) 2) Kea) erow i M. JEAN ABBOTT JEROME E. Falcons Attempt Ninth Unfortunately, the Tor- nadoes totally devastated the Falcons by scoring a total of 39 points. The statistics showed, how- ever, that Frankfort outclassed Keyser: a 28-yard gallop by Donnie Wolford in the second | eM at Homecoming quarter, the final touchdown, a 2-yard run by Steve Fridley, and Paul Hardy’s conversion of three extra points making a total of 21 points. Even though the Falcons lost their chance at a berth in the state playoffs, they won the PVC championship. 43 An Evening to Remember Frankfort High School cele- brated its first homecoming Friday, November 5. Despite the snowy, freezing weather, the crowds turned out in heavy numbers to watch the two ri- vals, Keyser and Frankfort meet. Clad in blue jeans and school sweaters, the mighty Falcon Band marched proudly and led our team onto victory. Under the direction of George Ott (left) the band worked diligently to achieve the high ratings at activities such as the regional band festival and various parades. This year’s band was commanded during prac- tice and performances by talented drum major George Poling (far right). With uniforms arriving in mid-Janu- ary, the band still had many plans for attending parades and showing off their fabulous blue and silver outfits. Pictured here are this year’s senior members with their two faculty advisors. They were all helpful in the organi- zation of College Night, when representatives from various colleges and universities spoke to college bound students from the surrounding area. Pictured (top to bottom) are, Jeff Hart- man, Dave Welker, Cindy Rinker, Christie Blauch, Debbie Foreback, Renée Davis, Steve Sluss, Cris Wagoner, Doug Kesner, Esq., Pre- ston Miller, advisor, Jakki Hatter, Craig Fraley, Alanea Dick, Chris Lockard, Keith Payne, George Poling, Dennis Milliron, Cindy Riffle, and Bill Manning, advisor. 100 HONOR SOCIETY The Frankfort Chapter of the FTA SAE was organized to give students insight into the educa- tional process. Among their activ- ities were presenting a Christ- mas play and showing guests around the school. Officers and advisors are (front row) Rita Hol- len, advisor; Scott White, histo- rian; Shari Scott, secretary; Julia Campbell, treasurer; Debbie Lambert, vice-president; Tony Benedetto, president; and Pau- lette Athey, advisor. The snap is of the manger scene in the Christmas play. Craig McClure portrayed “Joseph” and Liz Lease protrayed “Mary” in this scene. 101 102 Junior and Senior Choruses The Junior and Senior Choruses performed many times this year, including Homecoming, Christmas, and a folk musical called “Tell It Like It Is.” The choruses were di- rected by George Ott and accom- panied on piano by George Poling and Barbara Raley. The snap on the facing page is of the combined cho- ruses singing the Alma Mater for the first time at the homecoming game. 103 Sit on it!! Watch it, Chris! Two skunks up a tree! Her picture was not available, but we will not for- get the many ads and subscrip- tions she sold to finance our year- book. Once upon a time in a land where new schools were rare, not too many people knew what to do with a yearbook. Several people were chosen to overcome the problem of pub- lishing this book, but only a few actually accomplished the task. A whole month of school was wasted without having a publishing company, money, ads, or staff positions. Out of this state of utter chaos came an editor-in-chief named Alanea Dick. Under her super advisor Rita Hollen and consultant Pat Brakeall, Alanea and the staff got the yearbook underway. After the drawn-out battle of naming the yearbook, Talon was accepted and work began. One evening while working (?), George Poling willingly volunteered his services to as- sist as a senior editor, later to be joined by his faithful com- panion Dennis Milliron. The staff members who did their work in class are to be commended, but special recog- nition should go to the few who spent many nights in the cold dark halls of Frankfort eating and wheeling around on the typing chairs, always with layouts, copies, or pictures in mind. These people were Mag- gie Bean, Renée Davis, Donald Kirk, Pam Long, and Bonnie Wagoner. Our photographers provided us with many great shots, but the Talon, in much distress, was saved by Ruhl’s Studios and an understanding Herff Jones! It was with the help of all these people that we met our deadlines and ended up in a better state than when we started. The Frankfort Falcons, after a mediocre record of 10-10, faced the Moorefield Yellowjackets in the West Virginia Regional 3 Tournament held early in March at Potomac State College. Edging Moorefield by a narrow 71-68, the Falcons then confronted the Petersburg Vikings. The Falcon’s Greg Welker pushed up a tie-in shot attempt with three seconds showing on the scoreboard clock, boosting Frankfort to a thrilling 40-39 verdict over Petersburg. This victory moved the Falcons to the Sectional 2 Tournament, also held at Potomac State College, where they struggled for a 61-55 win over Hedgesville. This achievement gained the Falcons a berth in the West Virginia Regional Tournament held at the Fairmont Armory. Frankfort advanced to the state finals after staving off a furious charge by Mannington with a score of 60-55. The Falcons put up a gallant fight in the State AA Semifinals in Charleston, but Winfield scored the last eight points of the game after a 57-57 tie late in the fourth quarter. The hearts of the Frankfort fans sunk as the final three minutes went by without a Frankfort score. As the cheers died, the scoreboard showed a 65-57 score. Special thanks go to Mrs. Doris Herbaugh who kept the finances in order and to Mrs. Elma Duer and Miss Carol Jenkins who loaned us many office supplies. We struggled many hours on the final lay-out and are quite satisfied with the chronological order lay-out which we finally chose. We regret that everyone was not pleased with the annual but, at the same time, understand that it is not humanly possible to please everyone. We do think that in years to come, you will realize that the 1977 Talon did a good job of capturing the first school year. This is the true test for a school annual,
