Rana Dogar.Jeannit Dupler. and Angie Clark 3) Representing the Blue and White Band Angie Clark traveled to a camp during the summer for drum majors School was out and the students were bursting with excitement as their summer activities began. While many were soaking up the sun during either work or play, other students were participating in school-related activities. Few people would spend a week away at a camp that made physical and mental demands on their lives. Dedicated to their sport, class, or extra-curricular activity, students went to camps all over the midwest to improve themselves and to represent FSHS. Senior leaders, Angie Clark, Jeannie Dupler, Rana Dogar, Jeff Herndon, Jack Morrison, Mark Ransom, and Brian Werner attended Girls and Boys State at Indiana State University. Choir, Band, and Orchestra students traveled to music camps to improve their music skills. Drum Major Angie Clark participated in a special camp to team the art of being an effective drum major. Academic camps included the Midwest Yearbook Experience conference, to which Travis Sheets and Mandy Sebree traveled. Mark Ransom also attended an academic conference, Opportunities to Learn About Business. The Cheerleading and Pup-pette squads traveled to camps to improve their performance abilities. The Puppettes returned with a Grand Champion trophy from their final day competition. FSHS coaches sent their athletes to camp to improve their skills and to have the opportunity to work with other athletes from throughout Indiana. Summer ended, but the knowledge, friendships, and fun these students experienced carried on into the 1987-88 school year. 4 SUMMER I) The 7987-88 Puppettt squad posed for a picture after receiving the Grand Champion trophy during the final day of competition of dance and drill camp. 3) Scott Cleveland, Charlie Harris, David Ryan, and Keith Beneftel went to Indiana University to improve their wrestling techniques. 2 2) Varsity Cheerleaders: Jennifer Dahmen, lasrinda R sse, Chris Tegarden, Amanda Ostler, Jeannie Dupler. Jeff Herndon and Bob Humphrey increased their playing ability at tennis camp. SUMMER 5 FADS The 1987-88 school year brought about many new styles as well as making use of many of the popular, old styles. The skirts were mini'' as well as long. Depending upon your particular choice of styles, your outfit may have consisted of either a cropped sweater or a long one with a belt. Perhaps you found the baggy, loose look over the tight look of stretch pants. Even the guys followed the fashion scene in their stonewashed attire. Some chose to go with this year’s fashion of boots while others opted to go with last year's fashion of high tops. The ever popular Levi's look maintained its fashion standing in the halls of FSHS. Those not caught up in the fashion scene found themselves caught up in this year’s fads. These fads were as varied as this year's fashions. From skateboarders to video lovers on their Nintendo games, students entertained themselves with these new fads. Some students spent their weekend nights at the movies watching such box office hits as Dirty Dancing, Fatal Attraction, Good Morning Vietnam, or Three Men and a Baby. Whenever their pocket-books or schedules allowed, many students enjoyed attending rock concerts like U2, John Cougar Mellencamp, or Whitesnake. Even if a student was not wrapped up in the fads and fashions of this year, everyone must agree it was so cool’’ to he an FSHS student. FASHIONS 2 1) Relaxed in a casual outfit, Wendy Colder modeled her new outfit from the Limited. 2) Andy Oberhoulser and Amanda Ostler sported the 50 V style in their senior cords. 3) Tanya Weidner and Matt Smith preferred the Pasta and frosted jean look. 4) Jenny Strain posed in her frosted mini skirt and jacket. 6 FADS AND FASHIONS JfJ IN! These students prepared music and drill that would be performed August 25 at the State Fair Band Day competition, for two weeks of practice. Practice was bearable because the students were bursting with excitement as the day drew closer. On Sunday, August 17, the football stands were filled with people from the community to watch the dress rehearsal. The following Tuesday the band traveled to the State Fair Opening Day Parade where they competed with 6 of the bands they would later meet in the original competition. The band placed fourth. Although tlye results weren't as hoped for, the students had a chance to help overcome their fears and be attentive to the process. When the 25th arrived and the students rolled out of bed, early, for the last time. The FSHS band hall was overflowing with anticipation and excitement of what was to happen. The goal for the year was to make the night show and perform on television. Sweet 16 was the number to reach, and the band did. Rain made the track muddy but didn't dampen spirits. When the afternoon results were announced the band was advanced to the night competition. Again rain fell and the bands had to march through it. In the end. the Dogs finished in a proud position of 15. T! e goal had been reached, friendships made, marching abilities improved, and as always a greater hope for next year was formed by the experience. The band performed to Taurus’' composed by Bob Cotter. Blue Skies composed by Irving Berlin, and arranged by Greg Barker, and Phapsody in Blue composed by George Gershwin, and arranged by Greg Barker. BAND DAY 9 On September 18, 1987 the bell rang ending fourth hour and that's when the fun began. The FSHS student body gathered at the football field for a pep session led by the cheerleaders. The activities for the day included volleyball, soft-ball, a watermelon-eating contest, and a tricycle race. This year the volleyball and softball games were won by the seniors, while freshman Mark Renney won the watermelon-eating contest. The juniors pulled together to win the tug-of-war. Sophomores Matt Smith. Eric Teyema, Andy Nussbaum. and Lance Baker won the tricycle race for the second year. Also during the day was an exhibition of skateboarding and bike riding techniques, and a water balloon toss with winners Matt Smith and Tanya Weidner. That evening more activities were completed with the announcement that the freshmen won the billboard contest with the seniors placing a close second. Then came the crowning of the queen. HOMECOMING 11 FALL MUSICAL Dick Foster Mary Collins Amanda Ostler Eddie Cowles Trixie Julie Porter Den a Haney Legs Ruby Eric Adams Sarah Prosser Hilda Stephanie Wilson Millie Pam Brackett Mack Bahs Donald Harper .... The 1987 Fall Musical Give My Regards to Broadway, was performed by the Drama and Musical Departments of FSHS on October 20, 21, and 22. The cast of students brought George M. Cohan’s play to life. With a lot of hard practices the musical went together just as the plot did. This musical was a play within. The Director (C. Jones) was struggling to keep his theatre running, while new actors and actresses kept turning to him for a break. One actress, Mary Collins (A. Ostler) brought hope to this man s eyes as he fell in love with her. The director begged Mona Monroe (D. Burlash) to he a part of this particular play so she could pay for the expenses. Mona would not play the part because she wanted bigger crowds and a better theatre. The musical kept the audience laughing as Leggs, (E. Adams) an exmobster, found himself wrapped up in the excitement of the theatre. His girlfriend Trixie (J. Porter) hid him from Mack (R. Glover), a mob hit-man. There in the center of everything he decided to give the director the money to put on his play. A young girl (P. Brackett) is shown how rough life can be while visiting her cousin Betty (D. Haney) who was a chorus girl in the theatre. This combination of innocence, mystery, and determination brought smiles to the audience’s faces each night. 1) During tht play the chorus line practiced their routine. 2) Betty (D Haney) welcomed her cousin .Willie (P Brackett) to the theatre and to New York 3) As Gangsters. Roy Glover and Angie Stidham discuss the possible arrests of a few of their fellow gang members. 12 FALL MUSICAL 1) The camera caught Darla Burlash as she gave her Mona Monroe look. 2) The director (C. Jones) looked on as Mary (A. Ostler) performed a humiliating audition for his theatre. 2 1) Legs (E. Adams) and Trixie (J. Porter) Yankee Doodle Dandies. 2) Legs (E. Adams) dressed up in a theatre costume to hide from the mob. FALL MUSICAL 13 IN TRIBUTE TO LORRIE McPHEARSON I think of COURAGE — the ability to conquer fear or despair. I think of PERSEVERANCE — to persist in spite of difficulties; to hang in there when the odds are stacked against you. I think of a young lady who is the epitome of BRAVERY who refuses to quit. I see a student with an attractive smile, a pleasant personality and a sense of humor. I see a student who genuinely enjoys learning and participating in classroom activities. Her presence in school should be a source of encouragement to us all to gain a proper perspective on life. It should help us to realize that we can conquer our fears or let them conquer us. Lorrie has, in my opinion, conquered her fears and in so doing, has demonstrated to us a meaning of life — to live each day to our fullest ability. The main reason for waiting to work is because of transportation. Most students are not eligible to receive a license at least until their junior year. Spending money, work experience, and money for the future are the main reasons why students have jobs. Lory Jones quoted, I enjoy working at McDonald s because of the people whom I work with. Having a car is great — there is no certain times that you have to leave. A lot of upperclassmen these days are driving. If a pair of wheels are not available though, a lot of students rely on boyfriends or close friends or even the school bus. For those who avoid the buses, a popular way to get to and from school is upperclassmen, brothers or sisters, or parents. There are other various ways, such as skate boards, bikes, and mopeds. For those who work for their grades, their rewards will be great. Some of the rewards are being accepted to college, being able to apply for scholarships, preparing for college and obtaining jobs. For the other people, their laziness will hurt them in the end. They have now advanced to canvas, clay, and oil paints. As Julie Wheatley says. 1 5 Art class is a welcome change from the everyday grind of academic classes ... it puts my life into perspective. Students from other schools participate in this program. They are taught different skills in construction, then they must apply these skills to the house. Jeff Zeh lives in a building trades house built 6 years ago at 1109 Maiden Lane. Zeh says, The house was well built. We haven't had any problems with it. And, this is true with all the houses. Mr. Meyer supervises the construction of the house and helps the workers when they need help. The students work hard and take pride in what they do, and they have reason to do that. Well... it's not easy, but it is a lot of fun! Many of you are now wondering. What do you do that could be so difficult i To answer that question — we planned, organized, drew layouts, took pictures, and wrote all of the articles. To top that off — we had deadlines to meet! Mandy Sebree says, I like knowing that I'll be making memories that people will keep forever. The supervisor teacher is Ms. McDowell. The challenge builds up with each continuing year, and the students learn more and more each day. The first year students learn the basics of the language, and the common, everyday words. Second year continues in that path, and stresses the importance of structure. Third and fourth year students go into a grearer depth, and are able to read stories in that language. The High Life is distributed once a 4 month, and it contains many different interesting articles. A preview and wrap-up of sports, a schedule of upcoming events, honors achieved by our academic and athletic students, and many ads from supporting stores in Clinton County. The co-editors are Lisa Clinger and Jeff Herndon. Miss McDowell is the supervi-sor teacher, and she puts in a lot of extra hours to make sure the deadlines are met. 74 9 9 ) ) I I Thread the needle first, HnmE Economics then try and sew.” THE SUBJECTS ARE HOME MANAGE-MENT COOKING AND SEWING WE LEARN ABOUT THE ECONOMY AND SEE OUR MONEY START GROWING The aroma of food circulates throughout the halls of FHS. This aroma comes from the kitchens in the home ec room. This is where Frank- fort’s own Betty Crockers create scrumptous food items. Down the hall, you can hear the humming of the sewing machines as the students attempt to make clothing and other items. Mr. Catlin, Mr. Hughes, and Mr. Warthan teach industrial arts at FHS. The students are taught different useful skills that are used throughout their lives. They can print invitations and shirts, repair small appliances, make objects out of metal, and work on automobiles. These classes give the students a 7 chance to get out of the usual classes and learn by hands on work Scott Cleveland agrees with this and says, It gives me a chance to get down and dirty at least one time a day. Doing this takes their minds off of the homework in other classes and gives them a break. 76 What’s good, what’s bad; what’s up, what’s down; what’s right, what’s wrong; it’s all irrelevant.’’ math 1 THE SUBJECT IS MATH WITH NUMBERS GALORE AN EQUATION S THE PATH TO A PERFECT SCORE. Students begin their high school years in Math with Mr. Moyer, Mr. Niehaus and end up with Mr. Schilling and in between they have Mr. Page. In that time the students are taught Algebra. Geometry, Trigonometry, and Finally Pre-Calculus. It is easy to become confused in this subject, but with the help of the teachers, the students can easily understand, or at least get it done. Before starting their junior year, the up and coming Jr. Math students hear horror stories about the class and the teacher, and they soon learn they are all true — but many people go back to Schilling for a second year. Fourth year math student Beth Sharp says, I look forward to going to class and seeing Schill, he's one heck of a character. And most students would say the same, and they enjoy the math classes. The subjects taught are very important and useful in our lives, especially in government and sociology thanks Stu and Shep! Most seniors agree that these are good classes to learn about life. 83 STUDENT LIFE 84 Learning is what school is all about, right Well, for the first time this year, students were given the opportunity to prove just how much they had learned through the Quiz Bowl. Quiz Bowl is an academic competition similar to Channel 13's, The Brain Game in which students are divided into teams to match wits against each other. Names of the teams ranged from a simple Team Ten to the unique Violent Pacifists. Each team participated in four regular season matches and one super Quiz Bowl. After each match, members of both teams were given coupons by local merchants. The Super Quiz Bowl took place in Case Arena for the community to view. The Brain Teasers, who were captained by Jeff Herndon, ended the season with a perfect 4-0 record and a 1st place finish in the Super Quiz Bowl. Valedictorians Jeff Warren and Jeff Herndon, Salutatorian Beth Sharp, and Class President Travis Sheets addressed remarks to the class during the ceremony. The ceremony ended four years of dedication for members of the class at FHS. Congratulations graduates — You truly earned it! Live each day so that you will neither be afraid of tomorrow nor ashamed of yesterday. 98 99 s z A Z B Q U A C I B I B S Ask FHS wrestling fans the first person they think of as a great wrestler, and most, if not all of them, will name Rich Kelly as their choice. Perhaps this is due to the fact that so far in his career he has achieved 3 Sectional titles and 2 Regional titles; or perhaps because for the second year in a row he has made it to the State meet. Once again. Rich successfully wrestled his way to Market Square Arena. He earned an impressive 3rd place finish. What's equally exciting is the fact that Rich did so terrific as Junior — it makes FHS wrestling fans look ahead to even better results during his Senior year. Keep it up. Rich — the best is yet to come! Another athlete FHS sports fans can be most proud of is Mark Ransom. Mark swam his wray to the State meet at the Natatorium where he finished a quite respectable 13th place in both the 100 and the 200 IM after a very strong Sectional performance. This was the second consecutive year that Mark made his way to the State meet, and his State performance cappcd-off a terrific career for the dedicated swimmer. Mark's dedication and ability were also noticed by Purdue University, where he will walk-on as a member of their swim team next year. We know that with continued persistence on Mark's part, he will make Purdue just as proud! During his Sophomore year, Tom Herndon didn't just focus his interest only in track in the Spring — he divided his time playing on the baseball team as well; however, during his Junior year, he sent his sights solely on track, and oh, what high sights he saw! Tom qualified to go to the State meet with an impressive performance in both the Sectional and Regional in the discus event. He also broke many long-standing records along the way. Although Tom did not place in this year's State meet, he gave a most respectable performance. With continued dedication and hard work, Tom will see even higher sights next year! Imagine having an extremely successful track season even with a painful leg injury throughout the season. This is exactly what transpired for Jay Kirby during his Senior year on the track team; however. Jay did not let that hold him back — not at all. For the second consecutive year, Jay made it all the way to the State meet. He did so by placing 1st in the Sectional and Regional meet. As if those results weren't impressive enough, he went on to place 5th at the State meet in both the 100 and the 200. Jay's amazing running abilities were noticed by Purdue University as well, as he earned a track scholarship during the season. We know that he will be a most valuable asset to their team as well. The Dogs record of 5 and 4 doesn’t give justice to the play the team exhibited during the Friday nights of the Fall of 1987. Frankfort's competition included four state-ranked teams with the Dogs defeating Crawfordsville and North Montgomery. The winning season was highlighted by FHS's junior all-state running back Rich Kelly. Kelly finished the season by leading the state with 1530 yards rushing for regular season play. Kelly added 121 yards in the Sectional loss to second-ranked Tipton. Frankfort's defense, which was hurt by numerous injuries late in the season, was led by seniors Dennis Joiner and Scott Crutchfield, each with 904 tackles. The other three seniors were Beth Sharp, who led the front line attack, along with Leslie Campbell and Chris Tegarden. Beth earned second team All County. The team rounded out with sophomores Kim Myers and Keely Kennedy, juniors Missy Featherstone and Tricia Beard, and freshmen Lisa Donoho and Carrie Robinson. The team played well at times. JIM - 42 189 190 - ft.'1 191 This book represents many hard hours of work by the students and faculty of I'SHS, the Herff Jones staff hut most of all the Cauldron staff. This hook was put together to help you remember all your times spent at FSHS. Please ignore the little mistakes and enjoy the memories. As a member of the staff I can remem -her hack to the beginning of the year when we all struggled to come up with the perfect theme to describe the upcoming year. Finally, the Bustin’ Loose theme was chosen and we were on our way to a year f ull of work. The time spent in that tiny room with about 20 students usually ended in arguments. The arguments were soon forgotten because the book was not yet completed. And the fun and memories made in that room will not soon be f orgotten. Section editors were diligently working on their sections, as to not miss a deadline, and photographers were snapping pictures to fill the pages of the book while Miss McDowell kept reminding us of the cost. As the advisor. Miss McDowell, oversaw the work the students did. Don' blame her for anything you don’t like, because this was a student book. A special thanks to anybody involved in putting this book together. To begin with Larry Glaze, our representative for the year. Having changed to a new publishing company the staff had many questions. Thank you, Larry, for all the answers. Thank you to the office personnel for all the information and especially the use of the phone. As a section editor, I would like to thank the regular staff members for typing, pictures, writing copy and all the other little ways you helped each other finish the jobs. Miss McDowell, what can I say! We've been through a lot these past few years. Thanks for all the talks, and especially the fan that saved Mark Ransom, Jeff Warren, Kim Borges and 1 as we worked this summer to complete this book. Good Luck with future books! Do you think you’ll ever meet all your deadlines????
