. The time is the last week c August and once again it's time for school to begin. That long awaited summer has become a bore, As the summer tans fade, students find themselves faced with homework, tests and essays. Routine sets in, to some it is a hated grind; to others it's a chance to explore and learn; to us all, it's a new scene. We are all mixed together to paint this scene of the 1985-86' year. 2 The 1985-36 CAULDRON staff captured several moments throughout the school year. It's hoped that CAULDRON helped to remember the activities that were special to the students. The following pages recaptured the traditional events as well as those freshly introduced. The activities of students were carried far beyond the classroom. Sporting events, styles plays, and dances, were just a few relievers from the constant headache of school work. These times spent on dates and excursions with friends often resulted in the most memorable times of the year. The CAULDRON has been divided into four main sections. PORTRAITS open on pages 24 and 25. STILL LIFE begins on pages 92 and 93. Following that on pages 162 and 163 is ADVERTISING and finally, the CLOSINC. PAGE 2: 1. The commons scene during lunch. 4. Four seniors take time for this outdoor snapshot. 3 Life at F.H.S. thrives from the rextreme lowest form to the extreme highest. Whatever the extreme, there is a thrown together picture of individuals with their different strokes. We begin each day at 8:00, of course there are the stragglers who do not start until lunch, and we close up shop around 3.-00. Yet, some people won't leave for home until 5:30 or 6:00 They stick around for a club meeting, team practice or work on projects. Although Mondays seem to last forever, life is never dull at F.H.S., the scene is constantly changing. Student life is the only life to lead. It's always up to date, right on target and never b-o-r-i-n-g as long as YOU get in the scene. A day at F.H.S. often seems like a swirl of movement, sometimes there is time only for a quick Hi as you rush from first hour P.E. (where you've been tromping in the grass) to second hour on the other side of the school. Five minutes seem like five seconds. If you are late too often, detention is going to speed you up. At 3:00 the activities don't stop. It's a quick dash to catch a bus or make sure you haven't missed a shared ride. Besides homework, sports, plays, or jobs often fill that infrequent spare time of a student after school hours. PAGE 6: 1. Rick, uses the computer as an aid in library. 2. You have what it takes to make a winning streak and keep it going. Day in and day out we hauled ourselves to school to be educated, to become leaders of tomorrow. You took the challenging classes and the not so challenging classes . You kept yourself and helped that winning nt treak 9 10 Nick organize hi work in science class. Who is this devoted fan? None other than Mr. Spirit himself, Chris Smitht! One of the most important things you should remember when you get to high school is to be yourself because if you are not yourself, nobody will know who you are. To find out who you are answer these questions: How tall am IF What color is my hair? What color are my eyes? What color am I? How much do I weigh? What do I like to eat? Okay, now that you know who you are, then be who you are. PAGE 10: 1. Mark really cheezes for this one!!! 2. A one and a two and touch your toes, come on bend down farther. 3. Mike and Michelle find a spot on the floor to review government. 11 Homework, that dreaded scene that no one wants to paint. Procrastination became the major illness we came down with at one time or another. Why have something done early when you can stay up doing it the night before? Because, the grade is better when you take your time and carefully plan for it. Brushing up on homework is the smart scene. 12 14 Searching for reality is a difficult, if not impossible task. Even when things get rough the tendency was to run away in search of other ideals, those who refused to give up learned to cope. Outlets for venting frustrations and having fun were created or discovered out of necessity. The desire to improve both the present and the future granted the incentive to continue the search. Struggling through all the turmoil and making it was enriched with the satisfaction of success. That winning streak at F.H.S. encourages students to set high goals for themselves and nothing seems out of reach. Searching for the reality of life was not even unreasonable. Getting a valid perspective on who wc are and what we are doing did not seem too big a task to handle. Though the search may take a lifetime, the life is enhanced with a purpose to achieve. Students have definite ideas and basic views about several different subjects that are important today. Students from each class were asked their views about these subjects and here are the results. What's Important Do teens today feel it is important to be a part of the IN'' crowd? Most students answered yes to this with this reasoning in mind. It's not cool to be a loner. The next question was. do most teens make their social lives top priority? Overwhelming the answer to this was yes. Quoted from an anonymous person, they responded with a ‘yes’ saying, they (teens) can't do anything without their friends. If you don't have a social life things get pretty boring. The last question asked was, are self images important to teens today? Yes , was the definite answer to this. Grades How do most teens feel about their grades, and do they feel it is important to have a high S.A.T. score? Teresa Moore felt that the students care, but hate to show it! While Amber Storm believes that grades are pretty important, but not most important. When asked about S.A.T. scores students agreed that it was important to score high, but it's possible to be accepted by the college of your choice, even if your scores aren't exceptionally high, you should care and try your best, because just about everyone wants to go to college. A college won't accept you if your scores are really low or you have poor grades. Friendship How is the word friends defined and how do we define the word friendship? Everyone describes them differently but most agree that a friend is someone who accepts you as you are, listens to your every word, who is there when you are hurting, you'll always feel close too, you're comfortable to be with, lets you think freely and helps you through your biggest problems. A friendshp is defined as a special gift to cherish forever. When we asked which was a more important friend, a certain girlfriend, a boyfriend, or a friend? Friends came up as more important because right now they are the people you can count on and fall back on. Church How important is church and religion to teens today? We asked three questions under this topic and came up with split ideas. Do you go to church, was the first question we asked. Over half the students went to church. The students who did not go to church said that because they didn't go doesn 't mean they did not believe in Cod. When asked if it was important to have a close relationship with God, surprisely most said no . Teens are probably lazy and think that religion is something to be ashamed of. Most teens answered that they prefer practicing religion at church. Everyone has their own right to decide what religion they want to practice, and where they do it. Drugs Drug abuse is the number one killer of teens today. Using drugs and drinking is a problem that is surfacing in high schools around the nation. I think teens drink and take drugs to belong in the IN crowd, said Kim Gibson in answering, do teens take drugs and drink to belong? She answered yes to the following two questions. Do teens drink and take drugs to feel tough and to get rid of their pressures? Renee Wood felt that most kids think they're tough if they drink. The more they drink, the 'cooler' they are. Amber Storm stated that when teens drink and take drugs to rid of their pressures, they are just creating more. 19 What happened throughout the world this year, what or who made the news? On September 1st, the U.S. Navy research vessel, Knorr, discovered the Titanic. Missouri became a split state in the World Series with Cardinals against the Royals. Also in the baseball scene, let's hear it for Pete Rose. With 4,192 hits he ties Ty Cobb's most hits in a career record. Who can forget the Chicago Bears? A world class football team that can dance and sing. Not only did they win Super Bowl XX, but they raised money for charity, singing the Super Bowl Shuffle. How about John McMahon the punk haircut quaterback wearing those headbands? or the Frige William Perry, definitely a big fellow. The world united for a memorable cause — starvation in Africa. The top singers and bands came together to raise more than $37 million in the Live Aid concert. The smash hit, We Are the World, helped to feed the starving children across the Ocean. On November 19th, Reagan and Gorbachev met for the first round of talks in the Geneva Summit. December 12th was the last time, for along time, for Halley's comet to be seen. What about the serious problem with Libya? Did President Reagan go to far in punishing Muammar Kaddafi with the strikes against the country? Terrorists — travelers biggest fear. They haunted airlines and caused many heartaches in American families. NASA, will they discover the default that ended the lives of the astronauts, not to mention the first school teacher in space? The biggest bash of the year took place in New York over the fourth of July. America celebrated the Statue of Liberty's birthday with a grand party. What was in, what was out? Coca-Cola made a big flop by introducing New Coke and getting rid of old Coke. But, New Coke couldn't make it on its own, and Coke now has three products. Cherry Coke, New Coke and Coca-Cola Classic. Coke also came out with their own clothing line. Bruce Springsteen and Don Johnson became the top men to watch. Bruce, wearing hightops and worn out 501's stunned his audiences in concert. Don, wearing the lose clothing of unconstructed Jackets, baggy pants and tight shirts influenced the t.v fans of Miami Vice. Reebok hit the fashion scene with a hot line of tennis shoes, hats and sweats. Stirrups, paisleys, oversized shirts and Swatches were also in the scene. Rambo became a smash in the box office and a hero to the young ones. There were Rambo toy guns, dolls and even cereal. Another Rocky movie was released along with another Friday 13th, and Physco. Pee Wee Herman became famous riding his bike, in his own movie. Out of Africa and WhiteNights were two more top movies to see. Miami Vice and the Cosby Show captured the television scene. NEWS The woods we were once familiar with will be gone. They will be replaced with the new middle school. Isn't funny how many changes just our school has gone through. Below is pictured the first junior high and high school Frankfort had. 20 So much of our surroundings arc changing. The uptown is growing, expanding to better serve the Frankfort area. The Sears building we once went shopping in, is now being torn down and made into a parking lot. The old Boy's Club has been converted into a mini-mall, with a gym above it. Kentucky Fried Chicken moved from West Walnut out to the East end of town. Dominoes will move in its old spot. The famous Strip will be out of use while the jog is being repaired. Wal-Mart moved in out by the high school, along with several other businesses, not to mention Ponderosa. Condo's are being built anywhere there's room, and a new motel was built. Two years ago we watched Clinton Prairie break the ground to build their new elementary-middle school. This year we watch as we prepare to build a new middle school out behind the high school. We will never forget the pond and the woods that are now being replaced with steel and concrete. The scenes are changing and they are changing in Frankfort. Old buildings are being torn down. Pictured here are the Sears building and the Ingram building. Gone are memories and past ideas. Replaced with new dreams and growing hopes. This year's book is dedicated to Amber Leigh Storm, who left us on July 13th, 1986. She left us all wondering why a girl who appreciated the life surrounding her decided to turn it in for death. A midst the confused thoughts there shines many memories. Memories that we will hold onto, memories that will keep us going when we start to drag our chins. She was constantly relating to verses in songs that reflected special meanings in her life. She appreciated music, all types. She was the rare type of a person who could hear the wind's quiet song in the trees. The outdoors, she was a fan of Mother Nature. She enjoyed the beauty of the spring flowers blooming, the green grass of summer, the autumn leaves turning and the white snow blankets of winter. Amber had the talent of writing, she wanted to become a journalist. How easy it was for her to write about a sunset. She could describe it so well, it was as if you were there sharing it with her. Sharing, she would share her kindness with others, she was a true friend to anyone who knew her. At the end of the year Amber was excited as ever. Excited to continue on in life, to progress ahead. She had dreams she wanted to come true and she knew what direction to find them. She always said to look back on your life and appreciate those younger times. Because now it was time to go forward. Amber could brighten the darkest days, she always knew what to say or do. She was constantly reaching out to others. It's too late to reach out to Amber, but we can reach out to others in memory. As Billy Joel sang in his song only the good die young and Amber you died in your prime. 23 PORTRAITS Faculty Staff: Their day begins early and ends late. As the year progressed so did your confidence, and you became achievers, winners and most importantly friends. You by far are the biggest class yet, the closest class. James C.M. 75 F 0 R E 1 G N I am Jerry Chua, I came from the Philippines. I am living the George, Donna, and John Koppelmann for the second year, my favorite subject is math. Everyone here that I have met have been very nice to me, except for some people, I hate prejudice or people blaming you on what you didn't do. I would miss my host parent and all the Senior's of 86, and my friends here. I'm Elisabeth Liz Lovegren from Kinna in Sweden. The first semester I was staying with the Doans. They had two little girls. My second semester I'm staying with the Scheids. Jack, Connie and my sister Becky. In Sweden I'm in a gymnasium , which would be equivalent to a school between high school and college here. I have passed my first year and have two more years left. My future goal is to be a tourist guide, in Spain. The U.S.A. is a very nice country. I like the school but it's different to have the same subjects everyday, which we don't have at home. My fondest memories from the U.S.A. include all my friends, whom I will never forget, formal dances and Spring vacation in Florida. Hi! My name is Romana Mesch and I'm an exchange-student from Trittau, West-Germany. I'm staying here with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Jasper and Jennifer. My brother in Germany is twelve years old right now and I'm sixteen. Although Trittau is smaller than Frankfort, I often have the feeling that there is more going in Trittau. But I have had a lot of fun here and have found really good friends. My favorite subject here is art with Mr. Sawicki. I think school is a little bit easier here than at home and I enjoy that. I'm looking forward to my graduation and wish everybody good luck. I really have had a great year here. Good luck Hot Dogs for next year!!! 76 My name is Patrick Rutschmann and I'm an exchange student from Switzerland. I'm staying with the Unger family, and I have one brother Mike. In Switzerland I live in Winterthur, a city with about 100,000 people. I live with my parents and with my 13 year old brother, Pascal. My Swiss school is real big. It has around 5,000 students. Our classes are harder than in the U.S. and most of them are required. When I go back to Switzerland, I have to attend my high school for IV2 more years. Then, I plan to go to an art-school in Zurich and become a graphic designer or a cartoonist. My favorite subject in school is art by Mr. Sawicki. I'll never forget this year. I'll miss you guys. My name is Pongsarn Klongwathanakith but the name that I use at school is Eh Shepherd because my real name is too long to put into the computer. I came from Bangkok, Thailand which is the capital city. There are about 6 million people in Bangkok so there are a lot of things difference from the big city and the small town of Frankfort. I'm staying with Shepherd, one of the teacher in the school. One of many things I have enjoyed overe here is the school's athletics. 1 enjoyed watching the football and basketball play. I have a lot of fun from being on the tennis team. The people here are nice to me and I'll be back next year to graduate from this Frankfort Senior High School. Howdy! My name is Yurido Suzuki, and I am from Tokyo, Japan. I'm staying with the Marcum family. In Japan, I have two sisters, one is my twin sister and the other is older than me, and a brother who goes to college. Tokyo is a very big city where 12,000,000 people live. The main way of transportation is use of trains. Since Japanese tgeenagers can't drive till 18 years old, we go to school by foot, bicycle, bus or train. Japanese schools are stricter than ones in the U.S. We have to wear uniforms, no make-up, etc. My favorite class here is Concert Choir. I enjoy my American school life very much, and I will never forget this great experience in Frankfort!! Guys, you'd better not forget me!! The football season this year was ex tremely exciting and filled with many highs and lows. Who will ever forget John Mayers punt returns to defeat Batesville or the controversial call by the referee to take the winning points off the board and give the Hot Dogs a double overtime loss to 1 ranked West Lafayette. The play of the Dogs this year is starting to fit into the mold of a team Coach Heath would like to have. They showed enthusiasm, emotion, and a great deal of desire to win. Except for one game this season, the Hot Dogs accredited themselves extremely well. The offense was able to average 15.1 points per game while giving up an average of 22.3 points per game. The defense was quick and aggressive but lacked size in its efforts to shut down other teams offenses. 133 Girls Golf The 1985 Girls Golf team had nine girls who used 100% to win. There were seven girls on the varsity squad making a change from last year. These enthusiastic gals had the job of making signs making new cheers and generating school spirit from the crowd. 157 158 Football Homecoming was almost back to normal again. Last year, because of the track, the convertibles were not used, and floats were not made. But this year there was a change. The Student Council worked together and made Homecoming an exciting event. Thursday, the night before, several events took place, and the student turnout was great. Of course there was the tricycle races, the egg toss and the big event, the bon-fire. The team maintained their enthusiasm for a victory on Friday night. The seniors had the best float, of course, and easily won the float contest. The crowning of the queen took place during halftime of the game. There were eleven girls on the court. Becky Schield, escorted by John Kirby and Lorrinda Risse, escorted by Andy Shoemakers represented the freshmen class. Corinna Sorting, escorted by Jeff Zeh, and Chris Teagarden, escorted by Mark Ransom, represented the sophomores. Toni Teter, escorted by Scott Teyema and Kathy Kaylor, escorted by Dave Upsett, represented the Juniors. Molly Miller, escorted by Dave Noyes, Stephanie Mason, escorted by Pat Kersey, Gina Lucas, escorted by Todd Snodgrass, Queen Margo Morrison, escorted by Pete Clossin and Mandy Ridenour, escorted by Steve Warren, represented the CLASS OF '86. TRACK As the end of May started to peer around the corner it looked as if there would not be a Track Homecoming. With rain and cold weather the annual relay had to be postponed several times. Finally after giving up on having the Relays the court met after school and the queen was announced. Nancy Iwrin was this year's queen her court included; Shelia Brock, Tracy White, Jamie Hunter, Kelley Conkright, Kayleah Appleby, Lisa Lowden, Jennifer Damien. WE GUARANTEE OU PfiillwBrS FOR A LIFETIME r- - ADVERTISING 190 OUR FINAL GOODBYE It took time, lots of time, it took patience, which ran into some hard feelings, and it took dedication, which there wasn't enough of. This year's staff was young, so to speak, there were only four of us with at least one year's experience. We had our ups and definitely our downs, but we all learned together. Now I would like to say my final farewell, I've been waiting for this for three years. BILL BANKS — I'll start with you first because you were my sidekick, and sometimes I had to be kicked. I'm sorry you and Mr. Heninger didn 't always see eye to eye, your arguments kept the class entertained. As your Editor I wish to thank you for the perfection of your sports work. As your friend you're a fantastic listener with sound advice. I thank you for being there, covering up my mistakes, getting me out of trouble, making flower phone calls, and of course, a hall-walker buddy. Goodluck Billy.'' PEG HARSHBARGER — Just saying your name brings a smile to my face. I would have had terrible days if it wasn't for your humor and quick wit. Most importantly I wish to thank you for your work on the Advertising. If it wasn't for you who knows what condition the Ads would be in. Thanks for all the typing you did, it's a boring job but you did it. Your open heart and mind will allow you to reach all your goals. You ’ll do just fine in life Patty . KIM BEARD — Thanks for your work on Clubs, typing copy and helping the other girls. I appreciated your work, when you made it to class! You always made Mr. Heninger smile, and you were a pleasure to work with. Best of luck in your future, may you be on time to your wedding. LISA VEBERT — I know it wasn't easy for you this year, and I probably expected too much from you. But you gave it your all and what output I did receive I thank you for. I hope camp was fun. Bill and I had a great time. Maybe this coming year will be a little easier for you. Goodluck and have fun, like I did, my Senior year Watch those windows! CATHEE STOOPS — You had a big responsibility, Classes, but you handled it fairly well. You should be proud of your accomplishment. When you understood what needed to be done you were a great worker. Best wishes for your Senior year, just bear in there and everything will work out. TANA HILL — You had a tough job, you dealt with Reece . I know this year was really frustrating but we made it, I guess. Thanks for never giving up, the pictures we did receive were a big help. Have a nice time your Senior year. Your determination will take you far. JIM MAYER — Your photography helped us out at the last minute. You were so busy I know it had to be difficult for you. Thanks and goodluck to you. MANDY RIDENOUR — You took tfiis class because Mr. Druley put you in it. But it was a great help to us. Thanks for selling those Ads. ELAINA CHAMBERLAIN — You helped Mandy out a great deal second semester with the Ads. Your willingness helped us out with the bills. DAVID GURNSEY — Even though you had to leave us, your work doesn't go unnoticed. It takes the right type of person to sell Ads and you had the polished touch. I guess you were just following old Lapp in's footsteps. Anyway we were sorry to see you go, but your help was appreciated. MISS McDOWELL — Without the use of some — most of your pictures, the Cauldron would have some empty pages. I know sharing a room was difficult, but hey we managed it with very few problems. It was pretty exciting on those mornings when you argued with your class, I'm sure our class helped to entertain yours at times too. Besides thanking you, I want to wish you luck, no make that tons of luck. Being and Advisor is tough, being a new Advisor is impossible. Just keep the class working and don't be too upset over late deadlines in March April, it's a killer. Goodluck. MRS. SWAIM — You deserve more than just a thanks. You are the financial side of the book, the side the students don't know exists. Thanks for your long hours of bookkeeping and hard work. DICK MA URER — It was great seeing you those couple of times. Seriously, I know this year was a tough one for you and I do appreciate the help you could give me. The cover was tough to convince Reece with but we managed. Although somehow I think the color was changed on me. Anyway, it's difficult to move mountains. What are you going to do next year? A new staff, a new Advisor. You'll have to camp out at F.H.S. Who knows maybe you'll end up doing the whole book by yourself. I'll be thinking about. Keep singing and learn some new jokes. MR. HENINGER - School doesn't know what they are losing. You're the best and you'll be sadly missed. I hope your new truck and trailer provide you with the happiness you deserve. I learned alot from you, like Tennessee is number one and orange is the best color to wear. May your future be relaxing. STUDENTS — This is your book, sorry it was late. I hope it's exciting but more importantly memorable. Enjoy this book, cry or laugh but reflect back into your past. Without the past you could never reach the future. I hope you paint many new scenes where ever you wander. Treasure this book, so one day your children can sit down with it and laugh their heads off. As your Editor I, Gina Lucas, wish you all the best of luck. 192
