ED. Physical Education is a fun-filled class for all. The activities vary from soccer, tennis, swimming, fencing, folk dancing, and many other sports. You also get the chance to try out your bowling skills, when you travel to the Bowl-N-Bun during your gym class. The P.E. teachers, Mr. Kersey, Mr. Mullen, Mrs. Thompson and newcomer Miss J. Jacoby, can teach you many motor skills while also having alot of fun. When you're a Freshmen you can obtain your Boaters Safety Certificate and be a licensed boater. Life Saving and Civil Defense skills are also taught. So as you can see. Physical Education is a lot more than just the basics, it's fun! 19 INDUSTRIAL ARTS Auto mechanics, electronics, mechanical drawing, metal shop, and printing are the classes offered by the industrial arts department. For second year students ddvanced classes are also offered. These classes are an excellent way to develop skills that can be used in the future. It takes alot of perfection and patience to be successful in one of these skills, and the classes offered here give one o head start. Although the classes have been ruled by boys the female gender is slowly invading the industrial arts classes and someday may turn the tradition around. 20 SCIENCE Cutting into a shark or a frog may not seem like the most thrilling thing to do, but if you are an advanced Biology student it becomes an everyday task. The future Einsteins of Chemistry class may find the road difficult but behold there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We have many different science classes at F.S.H.S. and we are sure to find something that interests you. Remember the days when the smells in the halls were so bad and your continuous headache throbbed? We began to wonder if the biology class would keep the sharks over vacation. But the science department is one of the best, and we shall forgive them for the odors. 21 HOME ECONOMICS When the aroma of homebaked cookies and rolls float through the halls everyone seems to pass by the cooking room. Our very diversified Home Economics department attracts many students. In the past Home Ec. was a class thought for girls, but today everyone participates in cooking, sewing, housing, family living, child care, and others. The HERO program and many other vocational training classes are originated in the Home Ec. Department. Here we find the Betty Crockers, Galloping Gourmets, and leaders of tomorrow. 22 BUSINESS Maybe you're wanting to enter the world of big business, and the business department at F.S.H.S. is the place to begin. We can offer you classes from accounting and shorthand to business machines, just to name a few. Maybe you can develop your motor skills by learning to breeze away on the typewriter. If you are successful in your business classes you may want to join the OEA club and when your Senior year you can be part of the COE program and work at a local business. You could also participate in OEA contest, to show off the skills you've developed. Whatever your choice may be, business classes are definite knowledge for the future. 23 IT l _______________________ ART MS Our art department only has one teacher. Mr Sawicki. but this one man seems to have the super ability of five teachers. He offers many different varieties of art to the students When they display their work in the showcases it becomes apparent that our school has many talented and creative young adults who may someday be the great artists of our world. The classes range from ceramics to sculpture. Many beautiful and original items are produced in the art room, and every student should look in to the art program, maybe that's where you belong. 24 HISTORY For those of you are real buffs on history, you'll want to take as many of the history courses as possible All of the Juniors must take U.S. History, while Seniors sperfc half of the year in Government and the other half is spent studying human behavior in Sociology The other classes available are Civics. World History. Current World Affairs, and Psychology. Although it is true that we may never see some of our classmates again, graduation serves as an opportunity for all of us to expand our horizons. Class President Troy Walters, along with Valedictorian Tom Miller and Salutatorian Cathy DeHaven. led the other 222 Seniors through their final step at Frankfort Senior High School at 2:30 p.m.. May 24. 1981. For the first time the girls wore white gowns, contrasting with the blue ones worn by the guys. All in all graduation was quite a successful affair with the class motto providing a fitting resolution for the entire class: What you own is your kingdom. What you do is your own glory. What you love is your own power What you live is your own story. In your head is the answer; let it guide you along Let your heart be the anchor and the beat of your own song 1981 Senior Ploy This year the combined efforts of the members of the Senior Class have provided many interesting and productive endeavors. None, however, could compare to the excitement and splendor of the Senior Class Play. Under the direction of Martin Henderson, Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians was presented to the public for two spine-tingling performances. Leading roles went to Sandy Scheid and Mark Genda with a supporting cast including Mike Abbott, Sam Scheidler. Pat Dixon, Jeff Henderson, Mike Frye, Will Graebe, Sally Wray, Glen Hudson, and Blake Skiles. Once again the theatre department at Frankfort Senior High has outdone itself, and next year's seniors will be hard-pressed to top this one. We keep the Sne we picked and are not able to drop it for three years of high school The school activities I am involved in are Z-club. pep club, and concert choir. Outside of school my biggest interest are horses. I have a great time with my own horse. To get a driving license in Sweden, you have to be sixteen years of age and you have to take both the written and driving test. Many people flunk them. It costs around $500-$1.000. depending on how many lessons you've taken. Gas prices are as much os $3 a galon Many just take the bus. Being an exchange student is great and I am enjoying every second here in Frankfort. I am realy glad that I had the opportunity to come to the United States, and to see America and how Americans are. it is giving me a lot of experience to be away from everything I'm used to. My name is Michiel de Cleerl. and I am eighteen years old. I am from the city of Zaandam. in the Netherlands. Here in the U.S.A. I am staying with the Maddock famly; Kent and Kirk Maddock are both students at F.S.H.S. In the Netherlands 1 have a younger brother and a younger sister, besides my Mom and Dad. High school in the Netherlands are very different from the ones here In the United States. There are basicly four different types of high schools; one technical and the other three are different levels of ocodemics. Your schedule is the same for a week with different classes each day. Much emphasis is put on the academic classes, such as the sciences, foreign languages, etc. At Frankfort I am involved in Tennis. Intramural Basketball, and the fall-musical “My Fair Lady' . In the Netherlands we don't have sports at school. If you want to participate in some kind of sport, you will have to join a private club. I. for instance, am a member of a Tennis and a Field-hockey club. Next to Tennis and Field-hockey. I enjoy reading and photography. Other things I enjoy are root beer and chocolate-chip cookies (ha ha). It is exceptional for Dutch high school students to drive a car. First, you have to be eighteen years of oge before you can take the drivers test, which is very hard and extremely expensive. And the gas prices in Europe are much higher, almost two times high, than in the U.S.A., so you'll think twice before you buy a car. I decided to come to the U.S.A. because after my graduation I wanted to do something exciting and special. I wanted to leave my home-country, friends and family for a year, just to see how much it would be different over here. I think it was well worth the effort. After I return to the Netherlands. I wB go to the University of Amsterdam to study dentistry, which wiS keep me busy for the next couple of years! Although I haven't been homesick. I sure miss some things from home. In Holland, we eat much more fish than here in the Mid-West, and of course I've missed my favorite Dutch candies, salted licorice and plain chocolate. And I haven't hod a good cup of coffee since 1 came here!! 126 EXCHANGE My name is Jun Otani (Ohtani). I am fifteen years old and I'm from Japan I live with Mr and Mrs. Phil Miller and their famiy In Japan my father works in an insurance company, and my mother is a nurse. I have a brother and sister. We are very cooperative with each other, which makes us happy. Basically. Japanese schools focus on having knowledge about everything. Many don't feel that it is useful to know the things they are learning, but much of it will help them in their future lives. American schools have variety types of classes Students in the United States con pick their classes which go along with their interests and their talents In Japan all our classes are picked for us. We can't excerise our talents or learn more about our interests. I am on the swmmng team here in the United States In Japan I was involved in gymnastics, but I'm planning on quit mg it ond starting swimming In order to get your kscense in Japan, one has to be eighteen years old and take both a written and drivng test It costs about $1,000 to complete the terms in drivings school. I've wanted to come to America for a long time. I wanted to come to get answers to my questions for myself. I would like to know about everything, but I know that's impossible I stil would like to have knowledge I enjoy art and music. I play the violm and the guitar I also enjoy singing When I go back to Japan I'l be able to tel everyone about what I've learned My name is Julio E. Molina and I'm 17 years old. I'm from Chile. I Ive with Mr and Mrs. Craig McCarty. My father is a farmer We have a farm with a plantation of grapes, which sometimes come to the United States My mother is a teacher of an elementary school. She also teaches the students about Red Cross My brother. Pato. is a student Here the high schools are more complete in many aspects, such as. the different classes the student can choose. In Chile everybody studies the same things, which contains twelve classes. The extra curricular activities here are very organized. Chie schools have breaks between classes of about ten minutes in whcih we can do anything The teochers are the ones who move to one class to another. We have the same classmates through out the day. Some schools go from 8 a m. to 12:30 p.m. than after lunch from 3:30 to 5 30 p.m. The requred subjects for Juniors and Seniors are; Spanish. Math (Algebra. Geometry and sometimes Trigonometry). Biology. Chdean tfstry. Universal History. Englsh, French. Art. Chemestry. Phisics. Philosophy, and Physical Education. I was involved In Tennis and participated a short time n Swimming. I also plan on participating in Baseball I'm also in Spanish club. After school. I enjoy going to concerts, parties, football games, and traveling is one of the things I enjoy doing. In order to get your Sscense in Chile, you must be 18 years old and pay about 30 dolors, then take a driving and written test. The first purpose of my trip to the United States is to learn the language. Secondly I wanted to learn to Ive on my own and to make my own decisions. I also wanted to see and team about the country I've always dreamed of. I love the food in this country especialy McDonalds. The people are super friendly and they've taught me dot about their country. One thing that I really admire, about Frankfort Senior High, is Its gym and indoor swimming pool. 127 Xrkx, Rusty Moore put some stain on a board while working on this year s building trades project house Building Dennis Welch. The theme was “In the Mood. and it was carried out throughout the show with plenty of first class entertainment. The audience was put in the mood for dancing, singing, comedy, love and Classical music just to name a few. The dedication and talent really showed, as every act was performed to perfection. Many of us will always remember the 1981 Big Broadcast as “the best , and it shall ever remain a fond memory in the hearts of all the students who participated, and especially the Senior class of 1981. •• PUPPETTS The 1980-81 Puppetts were led by Senior Co-captains Sally Wray and Susan Milholland. For two years I have been a part of the Cauldron, one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Unlike most classes Cauldron uses your artistic, math, english, and typing skills. It is four classes rolled in to one. but most of all Cauldron is fun! This year the staff worked extra hard, and the results prove that. To Dana McClain, our typist, thank you for your typing skills. To the photographers. Marcia Carter. DeAnna Laughner. and Annette Patchett. you are the heart of the Cauldron and your extra effort shows in the quality of your pictures. To Tony Thompson. Boy's sports editor. I hope your Basketball skills improved this year and thank you for three years of dedication to the Cauldron. To Janet McKibben, you were a valuable asset to the girl's sports section, and always a smiling face. You did well for a beginner. Thank you. To John Bloom, you picked up the skills quickly for a rookie, you will be a credit to the book next year. John was in charge of the ROTC section and other special sections within the book. To Laura Abbott, our rookie of the year, you worked harder than anyone and always had your sections completed on time. The album section is not easy to do and Laura did a job well done. Thanks! To my sidekicks. Stacy Coomer. advertising and Michael Abbott. Co-Editor, what else can be said but, “we'll have to do it again sometime . And finally to Reece (oscar the grouch) Heninger I would like to dedicate this the 1980-81 Cauldron. And extend my thanks for putting up with us because we know it's not an easy thing to do. Yes, landslide-stunning, startling, astounding. beyond the wildest dreams and nightmares of the contending camps, beyond the furthest ken of the armies of pollsters, pundits and political professionals. After all the thousands of miles, th millions of words and dollars, the campaign that in newspapers across the land on the very morning of Election Day was still headlined TOO CLOSE TO CALL turned out to be a landslide. The American voter had struck again. Half the election-watching parties in the nation were over before the guests arrived. The ponderous apparatus of the television networks' Election Night coverage had scarcely got on the air before it was over NBC called the winner at 8:15 p.m. E.S.T.. and the loser conceded while Americans were still standing in line at polling booths in much of the country.II) Din a savage repudiation of a sitting President not seen since F.D.R. swept away Herbert Hoover in the midst of the Great Depression. Americans chose Ronald Wilson Reagan, at 69 the oldest man ever to be elected President, to replace Jimmy Carter in the White House. Some of the first returns came from states that Carter had to win to have any hope at all, and they made it mercilessly clear that White House would no longer be his. On the tide rolled, through Carter's native South, into the nation's industrial heartland, on to the West, until, reluctantly at the end. even New York fell to the Republicans Rising tide of votes, some hopeful, many angry carried Reagan to victory in one of the most astonishing political and personal triumphs in the nation's history_____________________________________ Hostages Released 100 Days 200 Days 300 Days 444 Days-Free! After 444 days of anguish and anticipation, the 52 American hostages were released from the American Embassy in Iran. The bells had scarcely finished pealing out the nation's joy over the hostages' release before the debate broke out on a tormenting question: Was the agreement that freed the captives a victory for peaceful, persistent diplomacy, or a humiliating payment of ransom that may encourage further terrorism against diplomats-or a little bit of both? Though the argument was somewhat muted last week by the euphoria surrounding the return of the hostages, it will intensify as outrage over the Iranian militants' harsh treatment of their captives spreads among Americans. Whether or not we buckled under the pressure forged by Iran all we can do is open our arms wide and say Welcome Homel 154 THE NEWS IN BRIEF Professional The 1980 World Series was between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Kansas City Royals. The Phillies won the series four games to two. They were led by such players as Steve Carlton. Mike Schmidt. Tug McGraw. and Pete Rose. The 1981 Super Bowl was between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders came into the game as a surprise team and defeated the Eagles in a hard fought game. They were led by quarterback Jim Plunkitt who was awarded the comeback player of the year award. NCAA Out of the forty-eight teams selected for the 1981 NCAA Basketball tournament, our own Indiana Hoo-siers were victorious! Only those true believers of Bobby Knight and the team would of thought that they'd survive. Because of so many good teams such as DePaul. Kentucky. Oregon State, and UCLA the competition for the tournament was tough But I.U. defeated the best of them to become the 1981 NCAA Basketball Champions. Pope John Paul II THE PAPAL TARGET On the afternoon of May 13. 1981. the second major assasination attempt in two months occured on a world figure. This time, however, the victim was not just another political leader; this time it was Pope John Paul II. While greeting thousands of admirers in the Vatican. a gunman fired three shots into the Pope, inflicting five wounds. As of this writing, the Pope is in serious condition following two operations to repair his damaged intestines. One begins to wonder who is safe from the senselessness of the world around us. and what can be done to prevent such tragedies As for now we can only hope and pray for the recovery of the man who is loved and admired by millions-Pope John Paul II. A tlonto Killings At the time this article is being written. 28 victims have been found murdered in Atlanta. Georgia, one of the United States fastest growing cities. The murders have left police baffled from the beginning of 1979. Citizens of Atlanta are frantic and have taken some of the responsibility of police action into their own hands. Government grants have been made and world wide coverage has been given, but still the killer is at large. One wonders what our society is coming to when one human being takes the lives of 28 other people. All we can do is give our prayers to the Atlanta children Budget Cuts President Reagan is launching the nation on a dramatic and unexplored caours that reverses decades-old policies in Washington. If misery loves company. Reagan said February 17. then everybody better love everybody else, because we didn't overlook anyone. As Reagan sees it, the pain is worth the rewards in order to lower double-digit inflation, spark economic growth and bring long-term health to the economy. We can no longer procrastnate and hope things will get better. said the President in his televised speech to Congress February 18. John Lennon On December the 8th a mirror was broken. That mirror was John Lennon. John Lennon reflected the way teenagers felt in the sixties and seventies. The Beatles, composed of Lennon. Paul McCartney. George Harrison, and Ringo Starr broke many music records from 1963-70. John Paul wrote most of the songs. In 1970 the Beatles wanted to do their own thing, so they split up. They would still play on each others albums and left open the chance for a reunion. But in 1971 Paul McCartney took court action against the other Beatles. This made them very upset John wrote a song about Paul called How Do You Sleep? As John's solo career went on. he had some great songs such as Cold Turkey. Give Peace a Chance and others. Also in 1975 John dropped out of the music business For the next five years John Lennon didn't do anything musically. He stayed home with wife Yoko and son Sean Finally in 1980 he recorded the album Double Fantasy. One song described his career as Starting Over. On the night of December 8th Mark David Chapman pumped five bullets in to the chest of John Lennon. It seems strange that a man of peace dies through an act of violence. So a mirror was broken, let us hope that we don't have seven years of bad luck 15S Roadmaster Thanks to a little extra effort by the members of the Student Council, the Students of F.S.H.S. were entertained by one of Indiana's leading rock groups. Road-master. On Homecoming day we gathered in the auditorium and witnessed one of the best convocations ever held Although the faculty and administration complained of the volume level, it was definitely enjoyed by all of the students. We thank Sam Schiedler and the members of the Student Council for letting us have such an enjoyable Homecoming and convo I Freedom Jam The Freedom Jam Band is one of many of their kind. The group, originally from Florida, tours schools performing all types of music from classical to rock-n-roll. The group also showed off their acting abilities in little skits that helped to deplict the type of music they were playing. They were so well received by the students that they performed a concert that evening that was enjoyed by many. Instead of having the traditional Thanksgiving convocation. this year a traveling theatre came from California and gave three short skits all which had some type of a lesson to think about. The group had no sets, very few props, but thats what made it so original and different. Most of the students enjoyed this type of convocation instead of having a guest speaker and the groups interpretation of Hell really made the students start think ing. Thanksgiving 156 F.S.H.S. CONVOS Cheaper By The Dozen “Cheaper By the Dozen is a convocation that will not be remembered by the students. Because of the flu epidemic and the cancellation of school the performers were never given the chance to present the first ever student produced and directed play to the student body. But for those who attended the evening performance. they shall always remember their evening with Frank Gilbreth (alias Mark Genda) and his family. The production, directed by Mike Abbott, was a joyful experience for both the cast and the audience The entire set was designed and built by cast members Although the play was threatened by sickess and absenteeism within the cast and rehersals were held anywhere and anytime possible, the hard work and effort that went in to “Cheaper By the Dozen was well worth it. Other cast members included: Lisa Clossin. Sandy Scheid. Sally Wray. Kathy Kern. Steve Henderson. Brent Jasper, Mike Camp. Dave Ottinger, Rich Redman, Mike Frye. Laura Abbott. Glenda Smith. Pat Dixon and Sarah Prosser v Singing Hoosiers The F Club sponsored two very classy musical groups for evening performances, one was the Butler University Band the other was the Singing Hoosiers of Indiana University (home of the NCAA Basketball Champions). The students of F.S.H.S. were fortunate enough to attend a convocation starring the I.U. Music students The performance was a shortened version of their actual show but even so everyone enjoyed the afternoon For some students the singing of “America will forever remain in their minds, for at that moment there was not a sole in the audience who didn't feel patriotic. 157 1981 SENIOR BRAGS MIKE ABBOTT: Academic.
