With the completion of the gymnasium, we finally were able to call ourselves the new Frankfort Senior High School. Men have been slain before — but few as courageous as he. The murder of our President is singularly tragic to students for he symbolized all that is good in youth. Because of this man the enslaved will have a better chance to live in freedom, the poor to live in decency, and the oppressed and persecuted to live in equality. Our President dedicated his life to striking away the shackles of apathy, persecution, and enslavement so that all men — black or white, red or yellow, rich or poor — might live in peace and freedom. Cauldron Dance. set for abundant experiences — 17 — at F. S. H. S. in 1964 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is the ultimate academic honor bestowed on a high school student. Members are selected for scholarship, leadership, and service. The purpose of the society is to promote high standards in these fields. At graduation National Honor members are the only students who receive special recognition on their diplomas. A seal indicating membership in the society is affixed to the diploma. Members must be in the upper third of their class and only fifteen per cent of the class are elected to the society each year. Regular meetings of the society this year featured Mr. Robert Ayres and Mrs. Rodkey as speakers. Mr. Ayres spoke on the high ideals of the society, and Mrs. Rodkey discussed Greek and Roman mythology. Mrs. Butler showed slides of her European trip and was well received. Mr. James McMurtrey sponsored the club this year, and the members appreciated his help and devotion. NATIONAL HONOR OFFICERS: Top: Jeff Moon, vice-president; Steve Rothenberger, treasurer. Bottom: Nancy Applegate, secretary: Bryce Franklin, president. - 20 - STUDENT COUNCIL One of the most active groups was the student governing body, the Student Council. It sponsored Homecoming festivities, a dance, the basketball queen court, a traffic safety check, and many other activities. The Student Council consists of the officers, the Prefect Council, class presidents, homeroom presidents, and club presidents. This year's officers were: President, Judy Hutchison: Vice-President, Jack Ransom; Secretary, Jacques Lucas, Treasurer, Joe Bricker; and Parliamentarian, Mike Campbell. HIGH LIFE STAFF One of the most highly appreciated activities at F.S.H.S. was the school paper. The High Life Staff worked very hard this year, and their efforts were not in vain. Our school papers gets bigger and better each year, and this year was no exception. Editor-in-chief was Sharon Hart. She was assisted by Chuck Brower, assistant editor; Greg Reagan, sports editor; Van Purciful, assistant sports editor; Barb Fickle, feature editor; Trudy Sharp, assistant feature editor; Susan Eggers, Business manager; and circulation manager, Karen Adair. Miss Kearns was the faculty advisor. CAULDRON STAFF The Cauldron staff this year, with effort, has managed to compile pictures, cartoons, and captions which we have composed for this Cauldron, hoping that some pleasure and pleasant memories will be obtained from their viewing. This page is dedicated to those members of the staff whose combined efforts have produced this marvel of mass confusion. DEBATE TEAM Frankfort Senior High School was well represented this year in the field of formal debate. The debate team sponsored by Mr. Martin Henderson, attended conferences at Butler and Purdue. DRAMA CLUB This year the Drama Club, sponsored by Mr. Martin Henderson, produced several rousing pep skits for the pep sessions. Regular meetings of the club were held this year, and the members did a fine job of promoting drama. Officers this year were: Suzanne Goodnight, president: Mark Lyons, vice-president; Jacques Lucas, secretary-treasurer. - 24 LATIN CLUB The Latin Club did much this year to further study and knowledge of Latin beyond the classroom. The programs of several of the regular meetings were built around various Latin topics. At two of the meetings slides of interesting aspects of Europe and Rome were shown by Miss Howes and Mrs. James Maish. The club sponsored dance was held after Christmas this year. The club finished the year with its banquet in the school cafeteria. This year’s theme was “Mount Olympus’’, and the program featured vocalist Miss Karen Wilson, a student teacher from Indiana University. Latin awards were given on underclass awards day. Officers of the club were: Lane Ayres, Consul Prim js; Tom Hinshaw, Consul Secundus; Stephanie Duncan, Scriba; Jim Maish, Quaestor; John Bright and Don Gorman, Janitors. 25 — FRENCH CLUB The French Club is open to any student who is now taking or has taken at least one year of French. The purpose of the club is to promote interest in the French language, culture, and people. Among other activities this year the club sponsored a dance, decorated for Blue and White Day, and had a hayride. The officers of the French Club were: President, Jim Young; Vice-President, Susie Douglass; Secretary, Skip Lyons; and Treasurer, Keith Lungren. The sponsor was Mrs. Bates. - 26 — SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club is open to any student who is taking or has taken at least one year of Spanish. This year the club members have gained knowledge of Spain and the Spanish speaking people through several interesting programs. They also sponsored a dance and decorated for B’ue and White Day. This year’s officers were: President, Carolyn Edgar; Vice-President, Tom Stroup; Secretary, Rick Bowman; and Treasurer, Nancy Compton. The sponsor was Miss Irion. — 27 - -inrmri' FUTURE NURSES OF AMERICA Open to any student interested in nursing, the Future Nurses Club had a chili supper, sponsored a dance, and decorated for Blue and White Day. The officers this year were: President, Jeanne Hibner; Vice-President, Colleen Strain; Recording Secretary, Jan Stewart; Corresponding Secretary, Nancy Compton; Treasurer, Virginia Wallace; and Historian, Judy Patton. MATH - SCIENCE One of the most rapidly growing clubs is the Math-Science Club. This year the club sponsored the ‘‘First Annual Elementary Science Fair”, which was a big success. The officers were: Jim Maish, president; Jim Kipp, vice-president; Dave Smith, secretary; Keith Lungren, treasurer. The sponsors were Mr. Phillippe and Mr. Belcher. - 28 - FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA The Future Homemakers Club is designed to promote interest in homemaking for girls. This year the club sponsored a dance and an interesting convocation on teen-age marriages and school drop-outs. This year’s officers were: President. Suzanne Smith; Vice-President, Janet Vandervort; Secretary, Suzanne Richards; Treasurer. Kay Pickering; Historian, Pearl Smith; Editor. Gloria Camp; Parliamentarian, Linda Wills: Project Chairman, Sally Snyder; Public Relations. Right: Lane Ayres, treasurer; Dave Smith, secretary. HI - Y The outstanding young men’s organization this year, as always, was the HI - Y. To promote, maintain, and extend high standards of Christian character, the HI - Y operated the refreshment stand at football games, conducted the annual Thanksgiving Convocation, provided ushers for the basketball games and for the Sunshine State Convention. (The boys were delighted to offer their services to the visiting young ladies). The club also attempted to attend services at one of the local churches every month. During the spring of the year (when men’s thoughts turn to things other than math) the club sponsored a picnic, which members and their dates attended. At the last meeting of the year the HI - Y and Sunshine hold a joint meeting to install officers and announce the Hi-Y Sweetheart, who this year was Judy Hutchison. Dave Smith, our secretary, at the regular club meetings read his stimulating, accurate, and ever-popular minutes in an effort to create mirth among his fellow club members and to chide the good-natured sponsors, Mr. William Waddell and Mr. Robert Schilling. It is a combination of the Stacatto and Crescendo Clubs. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Long and Mr. Butz, its purpose is to develop and encourage musical study. F CLUB The F Club is an athletic society composed of boys who have received their jackets in their respective sports. The dedicated sponsor of the club is Mr. Raymond Rohrabaugh. This year a special program was given by the club in recognition of the boys who had earned jackets or letters in school sports. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA The Future Teachers of America Club was organized to encourage interest in the teaching profession. Any junior or senior interested in teaching as a career may join. The club offers a chance for practice teaching through the cadet teaching program available the second semester in the senior year. This year the club sponsored a dance and helped decorate for Blue and White Day among other things. The officers were: President, Julie Cox; Vice President, Alice Howard; Secretary, Susie Eggers; Treasurer, Jan McGee; and Historian, Kathy Erdel. The Sponsors were Mrs. McCreary and Mrs. Buck. — 34 — SUNSHINK OFFICERS Standing: Paula Lipp, Becky Swan, Jane Pritchard. Seated: Julie Cox, Martha Dearth. SUNSHINE The largest group in F.S.H.S., the Sunshine Society had as its motto, “Others,” and the purpose of the Club was to help others. The activities and interests of the club and its members were varied. This year Sunshine operated the concession stands at the basketball games, sponsored many social activities for its members, and hosted the Sunshine State Convention in April. The officers were: President, Becky Swan; Vice-President, Jane Pritchard: Recording Secretary, Martha Dearth; Treasurer, Paula Lipp; and Corresponding Secretary, Julie Cox. The sponsors were Mrs. Wacknitz and Mrs. Gibbs. SUNSHINE STATE CONVENTION - 35 — CHILDREN S CHRISTMAS PARTY INITIATION Sunshine provided their annual Children’s Christmas Party, which Santa Claus and Twinkle Toes also attended. May brought forth the Ideal Ladies Tea and the installation of next year’s officers. All in all, Sunshine encountered another highly successful year. — 36 — STATE OFFICERS’ INITIATION SOPHOMORE PICKERS Big Broadcast of 1964 CHARADE LIDA ROSE — 37 — BIG BROADCAST The Big Broadcast this year was Just Imagine”. Along with the brilliant musicianship shown by the band's many seniors, there were many talents shown. Highlights of the Broadcast include “Charade” by Alice Howard, Mike Coffman and Cinda Mark, and the senior boys in their ballet number Dance of the Reed Flutes”. The dance band gave another commendable performance under the direction of Mr. Carroll Cecil. The Blue and White Band under the direction of Mr. Aden K. Long consider this one of the best Broadcasts ever presented. Student director was Mike Campbell with Sandy Wright as his assistant. — 38 — The almost-brand-new Sr. Hi-Fi was again a success, with its grouping of small but potent talents. Stunning, also, were the traditional black-light acts; we were treated to two this year. Led by our better-than-ever Puppettes, the cast, in the massed talent fashion, with “S’posin’ SWANEE SWINGIN’ REEL FINALE — 39 — SENIOR CLASS PLAY “Project!! Don’t break character!! Concentration is the word, people!!” The auditorium resounded to these cries for six weeks and finally, after much sweat, blood, and tears: The 1964 Senior Class Play, Teahouse of the August Moon”, was presented on April 16 and 17 to a combined audience of about 1100. The principals; Tom Adams, Dave Smith, Bobby A. Long, Pam Puerner, Steve Weber, and Ronnie Ellis did a magnificent job of carrying the lines while the numerous Tobiki Village people lended their comical local color. The hilarious clash of cultures throughout the play made the final scene a very heart-warming experience. The entire play company combined efforts to make this the best Senior Class Play. OH ,Rorv Eo Ro fAGo! — 40 — CHOIR The choir under the direction of Mr. Robert Butz had a busy year. The choir performed in the Thanksgiving program and did a splendid job at the Christmas convocation. Members participated in vocal contests on district and state level. The choir also performed for several of the local organizations. Choir members also took part in the Big Broadcast. BAND This year’s Blue and White Band was better than ever. The band provided excellent entertainment during the half-time shows of the football games with selections from Wagner as a theme. The band also provid'd the music at the basketball games and pep sessions. The band along with the choir produced the superb Christmas convocation this year. They furnished much of the music for this year’s Big Broadcast. The group finished its season by participating in the Elks Youth Honor Day Parade and by winning top honors in the Loyalty Day Parade. Athletics - Behind the scenes at — L - 17961 u! S’ H S d FOOTBALL Lack of depth along with injuries in the backfield and the interior line were the main factors in a disappointing 2 and 8 season record for the Hot Dogs this year. Even with these key injuries the offense backfield and interior defensive line were bright spots of the season. Six men played most of the time in the backfield. and four will return next year. Opponents seldom scored on plays through the middle of the line, as a tough interior gave up few yards. Coach Frank Bykowski loses only seven seniors from this year's squad and the game experience of NCC play should help the returning underclassmen to a better season next year. BASKETBALL The 1963-1964 version of the basketball team closed with a 7-14 record in their first year in the new fieldhouse. The Hot Dogs won their first game in the new surroundings, beating Clinton Prairie, but lost the dedication night game to eventual state champs, Lafayette Jeff. Coach Phil Buck and his assistant, Larry Shook, were faced with a lack of height all year, but the team was full of hustle and spirit and should be strong next year with five letter-men returning. A large number of sophomores and juniors turned out for the squad; however, the four top scorers are seniors and will be lost for next year. TRACK COURT Lynn Michael. Middle: Dick Campbell, Paul Emery, Jim Baldwin, Bonnie Royer, Asa Lanum, Bill Hufford, Rex Camp. Top: Buz Carroll, Dave Benge, Marty Unger, Don Rapp, coach; Stan Moore, Jack Watson, Pat Dowden. WRESTLING The wrestlers of Coach Don Rapp began by compiling a 5-0-1 record. With the dismissal of three members for disciplinary reasons, the team faded to a 5-5-1 overall record. Back next year will be all members of the squad with the exception of one graduation loss. CROSS COUNTRY Under the coaching of Dick Ricker, the cross country squad had one of its finest seasons in the past few years. The team won 5 of 7 dual meets; however, four of the top men will be graduating this year. Only Dave Peters and Dave Derrick will be lost from this sectional squad. BASEBALL The Hot Dogs, bolstered by the return of seven lettermen, were looking toward a fine season. Pitching depth and better defense in the outfield were the main worries of head coach Reece Henninger and assistant coach Larry Goeglein. Only four seniors will be lost to graduation.
