Q l JUN, The description of the American way of life requires the portrayal of two curves -one of colossal blunders and suffering-the other of brilliant performances and cher- ished successes. America, the land of contrasts, the huge, sprawling, powerful, bounti- ful, purposeless, idealistic, striving America-the greedy, savage, blind, sentimental, tender, generous, trusting America-mad America, exploding with her pretenses and hypocracies, her fearlessness, her righteousness, her almost hopeless hopes, her too faithless faithsfAmerica with the blight of her past errors, broken promises, lost dreams and unachieved desires-America with her unfulfilled prophesies, her unfound articulation, her unuttered songs, her unpainted pictures and unconstructed edifices- America from disunion of wrangling states to a great United States of America-with all we know of her that has never been uttered, she is for all of us our own America, the only one, in spite of her travail and tribulations, that can offer so much that is worth living for-worth dying for. In spite of her booms and depressions, savagery and refinement, beauty and gross- ness, opulence and poverty amidst plenty, tenderness, cruelty and compassion, justice and injustice, baseness and grandeur-there resides within America an unquenchable flame that lighted the difficult and bloody trails of our pioneer fathers and mothers. It can be seen on the streets of our cities, on the farms, in the factories, in our towns, in the mines, on our ships, and in our camps. Call it spirit, Call it liberty. Call it democracy. Call it the rights of man. By whatever name, it is the principle which gives meaning to our way of life. America struggles desperately today for something that has never been put in words. She strives with all the power, organization, genius, and determination known as American, for the aspirations, faiths, and hopes of conquered millions and for what America can and must be.

all i its The American educational system, probably the greatest contribution to the Ameri- can way ot lite, is primarily based on the concept that learning to do and doing to learn is basic to the growth and development ot an individual. Education becomes more than a process of cultural transmission. The curricula of the modern secondary school, organized and prepared by educa- tors, contributed to by economists, humanists, scientists and technologists, backed up with the finest technical equipment, not only permit etticient instruction but direct the individual student into an active participation in the educational program.
