Barbara Hobbs llirector-Miss llattic Campbell HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1940 l am the spirit of Frankfort High. l am the life of this school. Those dead look- ing grey walls, those solid red bricks, they're part of me. Year after year l am carried into the world by departing graduates. Yet every year l am born anew in the hearts of those who rise to fill the classrooms . . . I am the spirit of Frankfort High. In the spring of 1936 there came the usual happy, boisterous, but promising group. They soon proved to be no ordinary group, and by the end of September had organized their class. with Phyllis -lolmson, james Stinson and jean Rowe serving as officers. The first semester was a busy one. Building of Science llall was progressing, and with the coming of the second term the freshmen biology class moved into the new building. That last half of freshmen year will live on in f the Big Broadcast, YYhite Ilussars. Band Fair, spring vacation, choosing a king and queen for F. H. S. Then, on May 29 - vacation! Three glorious months of freedom ahead, to be followed by the return to school as sophomores. Vpon returning in September the new soph- omore class elected for class officers: Meuris Smith. president: .lean Rowe, vice-president: hlohnnic tiriffey, secretary: and lithel Ford, treasurer. Nineteen thirty-seven and thirty-eight proved to be very progressive years for the sophomore class. Members of the class helped in choosing a school crest. and in obtaining and equipping a recreation room, there the class held their first party for the year, on Halloween. Later, many members of the class participated in the second annual High Life banquet, the prom, and the F. Club blanket hop. Before the class of '40 was aware of it. another year of school had ended. Opening day next September found the class marching back to the campus. Fnd of the month found jack Fickle, president of the class: Jack Harshman, vice-president: Joe Bill Lockwood. secretary, and Meuris Smith, treasurer. jean Rowe was vice-president of the Student Council. As Hallowe'en rolled around, four class mem- bers, Phyllis johnson, llelen XYood, jack Fickle. and Bill Siffin, attended the National Scholastic Press Convention in Indianapolis. Miss Doris Knox. and President Fickle, start- ed plans for the class's big event of the year- the junior-Senior Prom. Committees were chosen and the work began. February saw nine members of the class en- rolled in the National Ilonor Society. The lucky juniors were Donna Budd, -leanne Daywitt, Mar- tha Faust, Phyllis johnson. Joe Bill Lockwood, Meuris Smith, joe Bill Sibbitt, jean Rowe. and Bill Siffin. The junior party, held the same month, took a novel turn. The class held the party in a local skating rink, and a rousing good time they had. Spirited fellows, those juniors. That spirit held good in March, when Frank- fort's Fighting Five, led by Jim Laughner, a junior, went from sectional through to state, to snatch the title for the fourth time. Activities of the year included the Forum trial and banquet, the first animal Hi-Y father and son banquet, the first Blue and XYhite Day, and. for a second time in their years at F. li. S., a championship basketball team. September, 1939. rolled around. School opened. The class of 1940, the seniors, took their places at the head of the student body. Officers of the year: president, .lack Harshman: vice-president, Johnnie Griffey: secretary, Donna Budd: treas- urer, held a pow-wow to select candidates for
