CLASS HISTORY—SENIOR CLASS 1934 For the members of this year’s edition of Frankfort High School graduates, the memories of the past four years arc most pleasant. This Senior class, the largest to graduate in the history of the school, has spent four delightful years of hearty cooperation and friendly competition in various lines of activity and study. Individuals from this outstanding class have distinguished themselves in many lines, including speech, scholarship, music, basketball, football, track, and PING FONG. (Eh what. Hattie?) The latter was developed to its greatest extent in the library the first period under the ever watchful eye of Miss Zimmcrschicd. Skill in these activities was acquired during four years training within the stately portals of our dignified high school building. Last year, as Juniors, this class attempted its first large cooperative activity.—that of ' putting over' the Junior-Senior Prom. The result wds a complete success in both attendance and program. Then this year, the last for the class, the spirit of progressiveness and enthusiasm was carried even further when the Senior decided to arrange and present their own commencement ceremonies, utilizing talent from the class. This action marks a change of attitude and policy radically different from that which has prevailed in the last thirty-five years. Perhaps it is a step in advancement. We of the Senior class sincerely hope that this is the case. If it proves to be a failure, we shall say of it, as the government officials said of Prohibition. It was a noble experiment. However, it is our humble opinion that this new type of commencement will prove to be a success. No doubt in years to come the names of the graduates of 1934 will be entirely erased from the minds of the high school students. But by those who graduated in that year, the acquaintances and experiences of four years of high school life will be remembered and cherished for years to come. THE END CLASS I was one of a party of excavators Who made their money by digging pertators. It was while we all were thus engaged That my shovel struck steel, quite rusty and aged. Faster and faster I dug with my tool Until I uncovered old Frankfort High School. My old alma mater had sunk under land The result of Prairie Creek's hidden quicksand. I rubbed my eyes, could it be? Yes, my old class prophecy. It was written in Latin all over the floor, About the graduates of thirty-four. John Bcldcn -The genial uncle of Irene and Richard Irene Randolph—Wife of Stuart.................. Emily Ladew—Her friend.......................... Nora An elderly servant maid................. ........Herbert Baker ..........Harry Larick .........Robert Thomas Elizabeth June Campbell ..........Jean Weymer Roberta Campbell Place: Saratoga. All three acts lake place in the drawing-room oj the Randolphs during the racing season at the Spa. The senior class play, Her Husband's Wife was presented Friday, May 18. in Central auditorium. HER HUSBAND'S WIFE Irene Randolph, having no troubles to worry her, is forced to invent some. Apparently this is not difficult; she makes herself the victim of an imaginary illness and worries about what will happen to her husband. Stuart, after her death, which she tells her uncle, John Ficldcn, she feels will occur in a short time- Irene then chooses her friend, Emily Ladew, to be her husband's second wife, telling her that she is the only woman to whom she, Irene, would be willing to trust Stuart. Miss Ladew, insulted because Irene considers her unattractive enough to be trusted with Stuart, and because of an unexpected complication arising from the presence of Richard Bcldcn, Irene’s brother and her former fiancee, makes herself as attractive and as dangerous as possible. The situation soon goes beyond Irene’s control. The amazing complications which result arc more than amusing. Eventually a satisfactory conclusion is reached in which happiness comes to all and Irene is cured forever of her imaginary illnesses. mmI JUNIORS Left to right: Row I. AFFIRMATIVE DEBATE Frankfort High School Speech students this year not only had their most active, but also their most successful season in both debating and oratory in recent years. In debating six teams took part in forty-three debates with other schools. For the second successive year we won the sectional and district championships of the State Debate League. The triangular teams won for the fifth time in the last ten years as against two for Crawfordsville, two for Lebanon, and one tie. At the Franklin College tournament Frankfort tied for second place regardless of the fact that regular first Affirmative and third Negative speakers were out. The three varsity teams participated in thirty-five debates of which seven were lost, nineteen won and eight were non-decision debates. The Affirmative team won victories over El wood, Southport, Marion, Seymour, Grccnsburg. Bloomington. Knightstown, Crawfordsville, Lebanon, and Greentown. Clyde Budd. a Freshman, ably substituted for Don Slipher at the four debates at Franklin College. The team lost twice to Ladoga and once to Delphi, and met Mishawaka, Hunting-ton, West Lafayette, Lagro, and Jefferson of Lafayette in non-decision debates. Of the five debaters pictured above Don Slipher, Robert Bond and Billie Ball will be graduated. The Affirmative participated in eighteen debates. Lewis Spencer and Page Spray will speak for Frankfort High School in the State Discussion League Contests to be held in April. She—I want a shirt, please. He—Neck? She—Yes, but not here. Jane G.—Is jazz dying? Bob F.—No, it always sounds that way. Roberta C.—Have you ever read “To a Mouse and “To a Louse Francis M.—No, how do you get them to listen? Martha Merchant—I don't believe Miss Kinsley ever saw a horse. Izzie Conarroe—Why? Martha—Well she asked our class to draw an animal and when she came to mine she said, “What’s this? Clarabclle B.—If a girl told you that you could kiss her on either cheek what would you do? Bob Rapp—I’d hesitate a long time between them- First Rote: Rol ri Thomas. Mary Strafford, Page Spray. Second Row: Thelma Johnson, Captain; Mr. Chapman, Coach: Helen Aughe. NEGATIVE DEBATE The very timely subject was the adoption of the British System of radio control which was used this year in thirty-four states as the subject for high school debates. The regular varsity team of Helen Aughe, Mary Swafford and Thelma Johnson, was unique because it was the first time in the twenty-five years of F. H. S. debating that three girls composed the team. The Negative defeated Elwood, Marion, Delphi, Noblesville. Franklin, Grccntown, each once and Ladoga twice. The only defeats met by the Negative occurred while a regular member was out. Page Spray, a sophomore, spoke at Southport, and at the Franklin College Tournament Billie Ball, on one day’s notice, ably substituted for Thelma Johnson, the regular third speaker, but the team lost to Grecnsburg. Bloomington, and Technical of Indianapolis on these occasions. In non-decision debates the Negative met Bippus, Roanoke, Grcens-burg, Rushvillc, Lebanon and Jefferson of Lafayette. Since girls are not allowed in triangular debates. Spray. Sims and Thomas spoke at Lebanon, winning a unanimous decision and thus completing the victory in the Twenty-Fifth Triangular debate. Of the five debaters pictured above only Spray remains for next year. In the Central Indiana Oratorical Contest F. H. S. was represented by Helen Aughe and Page Spray, and Spray won first place over speakers from Crawfordsville, Delphi, Lebanon. Jefferson of Lafayette, and Tipton. Say do you know a fellow down your way with one leg named Wilson? Well. I’m not sure What's the name of the other leg? Harry Larick—Therc’s a certain question I've wanted to ask you for weeks. Roberta Park—Well, snap out of it; I've had the answer waiting for months. Belle—Shall we tango? Hop—It’s all the same to me. Belle—Yes, I’ve noticed that Paul Kerns—This liniment makes my arm smart. Earl Applegate—Why not rub some on your head? A1 Nichols—Have you a season basket ball ticket? Julia Knapp—Yeah, what about it? A1—How about a date for the game tomorrow night? STUDENT COUNCIL AND MATINEE DANCES The Student Council has sponsored a number of dances during the past school year. The first of which was held October 12, at Howard Hall. The second of this series of dances was held December 8, following the Lebanon-Frankfort basketball game with the Lebanon students as special guests. On February 13, the Council sponsored the first of a series of Matinee dances, a Valentine dance, held in the new Social room. This idea, inaugurated by Principal C. R. Young, has been very successful. One or more matinee dances has been held every week since this room has been made a part of the social department of the Frankfort High School. The music for these dances was furnished by Jim (Rudy) Wolfe and his band, accompanied by Harold Boyer, the golden voiced tenor of F. H. S. SENIOR HALLOWEEN PARTY One of the main events of the Senior class was in the form of a Halloween party held at the Benjamin house, on East Clinton street, the evening of November i. 1933. The events of the evening included a walk through Ghost Land. card playing, fortune telling and dancing. The fortunes were told by Madam Harman and the high school dance orchestra, under the leadership of Bob Bond, furnished the music. Cider, cookies, and apples were served at the climax of the entertainment. SENIOR CLASS PARTY The Senior class held its party in the high school Social room, Wednesday evening, February 7, from seven o’clock until ten. As each senior was permitted to bring one guest from among the under class-men, a large crowd attended. For those who did not dance to the music of Jim Wolfe’s band, the sponsors provided three tables of ping pong, card playing and checkers. Refreshments were served at the climax of the evening. JUNIOR CLASS PARTY The Junior party which was held Wednesday evening, March 14, in the Social room, was a fun fest for all who attended. Each junior was permitted to bring one guest from one of the other classes. The evening's fun consisted of several relay races run with tied hands and feet, a floor show of girl tap dancers, ping pong playing and cards. Music was furnished by Rudy Wolfe’s Band, for those who cared to dance. Eskimo pies and cookies were served at about the middle of the evening. SOPHOMORE PARTY The Sophomore class party was held Thursday, February 22, in Howard Hall. Games, dancing, and refreshments were the features of the evening. The ten cents admission admitted sophomores, only. Jim Wolfe and his orchestra provided the music for the evening. SENIOR ALUMNI DANCE A Senior and Alumni dance was held in Howard Hall, December 28, at 8:30 P.M. All high school students and alumni were invited and were each allowed one guest. Almost one hundred and twenty-five couples attended and danced to the music of Benny Benton’s band. The dancing stopped at eleven o’clock. THE NEW HIGH SCHOOL SOCIAL ROOM In the past semester much improvement has been made on the high school building. Walls'have been repaired and painted: rooms have been changed; and desks have been refinished. One of the most important improvements is the changing of the school library. Those familiar with the lay-out of the building know that for a number of years the library has been situated in a small room at the west end of the study-hall or assembly room upstairs. With the coming of the repair work, the library was destined to lose its old location. The large study-hall was given a good going over and converted into a library. The walls were repaired and painted; the desks which were screwed to the floor were moved to class rooms; the floor was sanded and refinished. When everything was ready, the book shelves were moved from the old library to the new. Books came next, then movable chair-desks and tables were brought in from other rooms, and the piano moved over from Howard Hall. As soon as everything was in complete readiness, the doors were thrown open. The new library is quite an advancement over the old one. For the past two years the librarian often found herself with too large a group for the little west room: so she was compelled to place some in the library and the rest out in the study-hall. The seating capacity of the old library was about forty. The new room seats one hundred and twenty-five. The spacious new library room as presented to the students is far superior to the room used previously. With the walls spic and span, the floors in fine shape, bookshelves all around the room, the piano in one comer, the desks and tables sanded and refinished. the new room has become the pride of the high school. Beautification of the room was, however, not complete without a few living plants. The Betty Lou Flower Shop made a fine donation of ferns. The Student Council took over the work of making the room one of the best in this part of the state. A special committee is canvassing the student body in an endeavor to get potted plants. It is understood that some of the local greenhouses are going to contribute to the cause. All in all, Frankfort High School’s new library is a grand step in advancement. The large room serves as an educational room during school hours and as a social room for the clubs and classes of the school after dismissal. A few parties have been held and have proved a huge success. Cook—senior Cook led the Hot Dogs thru a tough schedule this year. His uncanny ability at shooting earned him a berth on the Big Ten first team and also 6th place in the Big Ten scoring. Brown—senior One of the jumpingest boys to take the tip for the Blue and White. Brown played pivot and he proved to be a great find. McCain—senior Take a red-head and you always have a fighter. That is what the fans thought of Joe McCain. Good on long shots and a tough guard. Ba USMAN—COACH A coach of high ideals and a smile for everyone, that constitutes Coach Bausman. Larick—SENIOR The long lanky lad placed 8th in the Big Ten scoring and, together with his running mates, turned in a successful year. Behr—senior When the score was tied, Captain Behr was the coolest on the floor. He was a dependable guard and a good scorer. MlCHNER—JUNIOR Martin—senior Always ready to serve when called upon, Martin was a good offensive man and tough on defense. He put the punch in the team when it was needed most. Michner —junior An easy going boy was Michner. He played on the B team, then dressed for the A team in order to help out when needed. McCreary—sophomore These Irishmen are a tough bunch of ball players. McCreary alternated with McCain and was the trickiest guard a-going. Miner—freshman Not very often a freshman gets on the varsity A team, but this boy Miner did and to top it off he stuck the whole year to serve the team and Coach. Manager Andrews Every team has its manager, so the team selected Fred Andrews, best manager yet. Phillips—senior Phillips made the squad this year and he did his best when called upon to go into the game. Ralph was captain and received honorable mention for all state honors. Paul Martin: ’’Pig” was a real triple threat man and many times showed his grit while calling signals for F. H. S. during the past three years. Elmer McCall: ’Bull”, a mainstay for the past two years, was a real fighter, and his fighting spirit was contagious to the rest of the team. Albert Nickols: ’’Nick,” one of the most dependable linemen the last two years, was always in there fighting when the going was the toughest and could be depended on on the goal line. Robert Bchr: Bob was the first of the Frankfort Behrs to play football, but he sure proved his mettle when he nailed the opponent on the line of scrimmage. Robert Fudge: ’’Daddy” was a fine scrapper and a dependable pass snatcher. Opponents found it almost impossible to get around Fudge’s end. James Donoho: ’’Ivan” was one of the best defense men on the team and was a hard tackier. Jim received a severe leg injury in the Jeff game and was forced out the remainder of the season. UNDERCLASSMEN Gorman Tomkins: ’’Tommy”, halfback for the past three years, was one of the hardest tacklers and blockers on the team, and will be back again next year. Junior McCreary: ”Jay” was the trickiest player on the team and proved to be quite a sensation. He should be a big asset to the team the next two years. Charles Woodard: Charlie, a good tackier and a real blocker, stopped play after play around his end last year and hopes to do so another year. Elbert Innis: Elbert broke through the line to break up many plays and should prove to be a high help to next year’s team. William Michncr: Bill very seldom made a bad pass from center and was one of the steadiest men in the line. Bill should be a power next year. Robert VanTyle: Bob, one of the toughest linemen on the team and as scrappy as can be, will be back next season. Richard Shaffer: ’’Smokcy”, the heaviest man on the squad, proved to be a ’’big” surprise and stopped many plays on his side of the line. He will be back next year. Playing the toughest schedule that the Frankfort Nighthawks have ever played, the Blue and White ended a very successful season. “Buck” presented Miller, Miner and McKinsey with minor F” awards, while VanTyle, Innis, McCreary, Shaffer, Woodard, Michncr, Donoho and Fudge were presented with sweaters and a major ”F”. Phillips, Nickols, Bchr, Martin, McCall and Tompkins, who were awarded sweaters last year, received service stripes for their work on the gridiron last season.
