SIENIIORS IFUTIUIRIE TFILIIGIHIT As I ascend to the great telescope mounted upon the hrghest mountarn f Mars my thoughts turn back to the crrcumstances that led to the organrza tron of the frrst earth to Mars rocket expedrtron rn the year of 1952 The genrus that frrst concerved and put rnto executron thrs rdea rs none other than Professor Pobert Peavler who has garned fame and fortune by hrs arscovery and explanatron of hrs fourth drmensron theory Charles Grcaboskr brg trme racketeer contrrbuted generously to the expedrtron and also donated two of hrs personal body auards Iohnnre fTarzanJ Whrtesrdes and Wayne Smothers to accompany the expedrtron as mascots Perhaps rt rs a touch of homesrckness that causes me to focus the power ful Martran telescope upon the smoky lrttle town that I love so well Adfustrng the telescope to rts frnest degree I am able to prck up my old Alma Mater I-tastrlv I adrust my soundoscope and am now able to prck up sound There rs Sally Morrrs our career grrl comrng out upon the campus of F C H S She rs followed by her Physrcal Educatron class Now they begrn to do gymnas trcs and rt looks lrke yes rt rs Ivan Benn wrth them hrs harr rs greyrna slrghtly at the temples He has been farn to leave the school of hrs glorrous athletrc achrevement and so has contrnued to take post graduate courses for the past years As I scan the busrness drstrrct of West Frankfort my telescope prcks up a scene of vrolent actron Polrceman Tommy McKre has arrested lean Echols or peddlrng peanuts wrthout a lrcense and rs now attemptrng to take her to farl Say thrs rs progress a group of W PA men are erectrng a huge dam ac oss Benton Creek and seem to be havrng trouble of therr own My soundo scope prcks up the vorce of fohn Martrn as he attempts to concrlrate a group of srt down strrkers composed of Lyle Henley Albert Lyons George Novak Ed Kathelynas Iack Foster and I O Patton They seem to obrect to workrng on a Benton Profect and are seekrng to be transferred back to West Frankfort where a rarge County Court House rs now berng erected The scene shrfts north to Benton where I frnd a large burldrng bearrng a srgn that reads Bennre s Cut Bate Drug Store Could thrs be my old class mate Eddre Bennre9 It must be because there goes Eddre followed by hrs sales force whrch consrsts of Florence Bell Irrs Holder Mary Doty Martha Koptz and Iurre Srbley I see that hrs magnetrc p rsonalrty strll attracts my farr crassmates A mrld eruptron on Mars causes my telescope to focus next on a huge rce skatrng rrnk rn St Lours Here from a background of rce emerges our glamour grrl Vrvran Lou Martrn gracefully cuttrng frgures of erght Her background IS formed by forty brunette chorus grrls among whom we recognrze Dorothy Cunnrngham Vrrgrrrra Iohnston Gretchen Freeman Iane Mosley and Evelyn Oale My soundoscope prcks up a tremendous burst of applause as Chester Nameth and Sue Henson skate out and begrn therr Ice Ballet I lump wrth an1a7ement as the orchestra bur ts tnto the old famrlrar Paschedag Blues Swrngrng my telescope around I see Lavern Sanders leadrng the orchestra and swrngrng hrs baton lrke a veteran Now I swrng my telescope to cover Scott s Arr Port Here I frnd a great buzz of excrtement and confusron Scan nrng the sky I frnd that a grant transcontrnental arrshrp rs about to land As the prlot steps from the plane I recoanrze Kenneth Peffer and hrs co prlot Alre Schrrver I recerve even a greater shock when Marre Evans appears wrth a hostess cap perched upon her glrstenrng curls My telescope rs next focused upon Palm Beach Florrda where I frnd a bathrng beauty contest rn full swrng Even here I frnd some former F C H S beautres There rs lane Lawrence Fay Thames Helen Neal Myra Perry and Margre Srmrnons The fudge who I recognrze rs Clyde Mabry slowly rarses hrs hand and rs about to render a decrson Everythrng rs growrng rndrstrnct rne brrght Florrda sun has fadedl Oh I understand The earth has passed between the sun and Mars hrdrng from rne forever the fame and fate of my old frrends of the class of 40 q 1 - M 1 ., . , 1 A . .
