On the Threshold A wide plain stretches before us, Our feet are willing to gog Yet we linger awhile on the threshold Of the dear, old school we know. I.ife,s aer'age opens around usg Our hands are eager to sow, But we find it a sad, bitter parting From the dear, old school we know. lVe have work that we want to realize, And tasks we must defeat, WVe thirst to use our talents, And prove what we can give To the world and all its peoples In just the way we live. As a tree is a living thing that has a long life, and at the same time, a great amount of beauty, we have elected to plant this memorial to the Class of June, '29, Have you ever noticed the friendliness and independence of a tree? It stands alone and yet in harmony with its neighbors. It-a roots sink far into the dark earth, to bring nourishment for its growth, while the leaves are ab- sorbing the air and sunlight from above. Trees are absolutely essential to the life of human beings, as they purify the air and store up a water supply. If there had been no trees in the days of antiquity, there could be no man, for they were his chief shelter. There is nothing more restful after a long, dreary day, than to walk in a great forest, beside a bubbling brook listening to the murmur of the w ind among the branches. The majesty of the trees sinks into the very soul. Tl1erefo1'e, we can leave no more fitting monument to our stay at Frank- ford High School than this linden tree. The leaves of a tree help it grow and the more leaves it possesses, the greater its strength and beauty. Let us hope, therefore, that we may add leaves of learning and experience to our lives each year, so that we may, as the years 1'oll over us, become stronger and better in every sense.
